1) Read each scenario

2) Match up the correct triangle with each scenario

3) Which of these triangles are unbalanced? What needs to happen to make them balanced again?

Scenario 1 Jordan has lots of friends. He spends most of his time getting together with

them. They play video games, go to the beach, or watch movies. Jordan has never been very good at sports or school, and he does not try to change that.

Scenario 2 Tamara has a few close friends and sees them primarily on the weekends.

She is busy most weeknights with basketball practice and homework. Geography is her favorite subject.

Scenario 3 Aaron does not spend much time with friends or family because he has

soccer practice on weeknights and baseball games on weekends. His grades, which used to be good, are slipping and his parents are annoyed because he’s not doing his chores.

Setting Goals

Why would someone want to set a goal? What are some examples of different goals?

Have you ever been on a boat or ferry? Imagine you boarded a boat and were suddenly told

that you were now the captain. You had no idea where the boat was supposed to go and no idea

in which direction to even start moving. In order to get the boat moving, you need to make a decision about where you want to go. If you have no destination in mind and you just float

around aimlessly, you could end up ANYWHERE!

Why Set Goals?

Setting goals gets you to think about possibilities Goals give you a direction to work towards Goals give you a clear picture of where you want

to go Goals help you to push yourself just that little bit

more Goals help you have a more fun and fulfilled life Goals can give you motivation and focus Setting goals helps you do all the things you

want to do in life!

Goals Quiz…

When you go to bed at night do you ever think about the things you’d like to do the next day?

When you wake up in the morning, do you ever think about all the things you’d lie to do that day?

Do you ever write lists of things you need to do or things you want to remember?

Have you ever thought about something you wanted to do and then tried to work out how to make it happen?

Goals Quiz…

Do you find it easier to do something or learn something if you are clear what the end point will be?

Do you find you work harder when you are doing something you are interested in or enjoy?

Do you feel better when you know exactly what you are supposed to be doing?

Do you feel less stressed when you know you are doing the things you should be doing?

Goals Quiz…

Have you ever set yourself a “goal” to achieve either at school or in your personal life?

Have you ever done something that you found hard or challenging but you persisted because you wanted to make it to the end?

If you had “YES” 5 or more times…You already have a good natural understanding of why we need to set goals. Without even realizing it you are already automatically goal setting at different times in your life.

If you had “YES” less than 5 times… You haven’t spend too much time setting goals so it will be an exciting experience for you to try it and see how powerful it really is!

Types of Goals

Types of goals…

Short term goals Hours, days, weeks, a few

months Examples: A on math test/clean

room/score a touchdown next game

Long term goals Months, years ( In the future) Examples: College/Career,

Family, Live

Creating Goals

How do you make goals?

Don’t Forget to Make them SMART Specific

What exactly do you hope to accomplish by setting this goal?

What are you going to do in detail?

Measurable Can you see, count, measure, or weigh

results? Can you easily determine success? What is the amount or percentage you

need to "hit" in order to reach my goal?

Creating Goals

How do you make goals?

Attainable Thinking optimistically, can this really be achieved

with your abilities? Do you have the resources, or potential access to

the resources that you need to achieve this goal?

Realistic Set your goals low enough to be achieved but high

enough to be a challenge.

Timely Is this goal appropriate for you right now? Have you put a timeline on when you would like to

achieve your goal? Do you have enough time to establish reasonable

timelines, target dates and deadlines?

Creating Goals
