RISK ASSESSMENT

Introduction Module1: Explain the specified requirements pertaining to continuous hazard identification and risk assessment. Module 2 : Prepare for hazard identification Module 3: Identify hazards and assess risks. Module 4: Initiate remedial and follow-up action. Venue: On Site Duration: 1 Day

THE OUTCOMES OF AN EFFECTIVE RISK ASSESSMENT A well-planned risk assessment should answer these questions :

1. Are there hazards present at the workplace that have not yet been recognized?

2. Are there hazards that pose a greater – or lower – risk than was hitherto thought?

3. Is it possible to eliminate the hazards all together?

4. Is it possible to reduce the harm that the hazards may cause?

5. Are the existing health and safety precautions adequate, in principle, to protect people from

these hazards?

6. Could an improved standard of protection be achieved for the same cost?

7. Are there better, more cost-effective, ways of achieving the same standards of protection?

8. What do individual employees think about the risks they experience, and the practicality of

(and the need for) the preventive measures?

9. Are the existing precautions used in practice, and not ignored in the face of, for example,

production pressures?

SCAFFOLDING ERECTOR

Introduction Module1: Prepare and plan for scaffold erection and dismantling Module 2 : Identify and select. Module 3: Erect scaffolding. Module 4: Dismantle scaffolding. Venue: On Site Duration: 2 Days

Scaffolding types that are commonly used There are 4 types of scaffolding commonly used in construction works. Each of them are briefly

described below

Supported Scaffolding

supported scaffolding

If elevation is required, then this is the most commonly used scaffolding type. If the scaffolding needs to take a lot of weight, then extra support may be required with supported scaffolding. This is also true if long scaffolding is needed. It is considered the easiest and safest form of scaffolding to use. It is the most cost-effective type of scaffolding to use.

Suspended Scaffolding

suspended scaffolding

This type of scaffolding is usually suspended from a tall construct or roof. It is used when

constructing a base is difficult or impossible. It is often used when workers need access to upper

levels where building from the ground is impractical. Window cleaners sometimes use this type of

scaffolding to clean tower block windows. It is often seen when repairs are needed for upper levels

too.

Page 21: HEALTH AND SAFETY · Powered Pallet Truck Refresher Advanced Driving Training Grader Opearator Refresher Forklift Novice MobiLift Novice MobiLift Refresher . Module 4 AIDS AWARENESS

Rolling Scaffolding

rolling scaffolding

This type of scaffolding is similar to supported scaffolding, but there are caster wheels on the base

that allow the scaffolding to be moved without the need for it to be deconstructed or added to. The

wheels are locked when the scaffolding has been moved so that the construction staff may start

work

Aerial Lifts They are also known as aerial platforms. The most common are vehicle-mounted aerial platforms (scissor type), and vehicle-mounted aerial lifts with telescopic and rotating boom. They allow workers to access multiple levels in order to do their job.

aerial lift scaffolding

If work is needed such as installing windows on a high-rise building, then this form of scaffolding

allows the workers to access the exterior of each without needing to construct and deconstruct their

scaffolding. It is most commonly seen when people are working on lampposts and telephone poles.

Module 3: Plan resources for erecting, altering / repositioning access scaffoldings Module 4 Assess site risk and accessibility Module 5 Execute access scaffolding operations. Venue: On Site Duration: 1 Day

Who is the Course For?

This course is suitable for personnel who require basic information with regard to scaffold inspection, alternatively it is also beneficial for those who wish to update their knowledge. Personnel attending this course, should be actively involved in the inspection of scaffolding.

Aims

To emphasise to delegates the employer's statutory obligation to have competent persons to inspect and then complete reports on scaffolds in the workplace. To give delegates practice at inspecting scaffolds and completing inspection reports. Objectives At the end of the course delegates will be able to:-

SAFETY HARNESS

Introduction Module1: Demonstrate basic knowledge of the limitations of a limited range of fall arrest equipment and regulations. Module 2 : Inspect, assemble and store fall arrest equipment Module 3: Select suitable anchor points. Module 4 Use fall arrest systems with a double lanyard Module 5 Use pre-installed vertical and horizontal life-lines and explain reducing risks during rescue. Venue: On Site Duration: 1 Day

Personal Fall Arrest Systems

• Next, we have a personal fall arrest system that’s specifically designed to protect you in a freefall situation.

• When you’re freefalling, you’re going at a very rapid speed with the weight and distance of the freefall, and when you stop, it’s the sudden impact that actually causes injury.

• Generally, it has five components: a full body harness, a lanyard, snap hooks, an anchorage point, and the fifth component is knowledge of how the system works and how to take care of the equipment.

How to Put on a Body Harness

• Let’s quickly review how to put on a body harness, keeping in mind there are several types.

• First, hold the harness off the ground by the D-ring. Check that all buckles are unbuckled and there are no twisted straps.

• Follow the two straps coming out of the D-ring, keeping in mind that one strap has a buckle, and the other one doesn’t.

• Slide your left arm into the harness and pull the strap without the buckle over your head.

• These two straps now form an X on your chest, with one strap hanging loose.

• Take the loose-hanging strap, and buckle it into the waist strap.

• Now, hook up your thigh straps, and if you’ve done everything correctly, the D-ring should be in the middle of your back.

• The next step is to attach the shock absorbing end of the lanyard to the D-ring, and the other end of the lanyard to the anchor point.

Page 27: HEALTH AND SAFETY · Powered Pallet Truck Refresher Advanced Driving Training Grader Opearator Refresher Forklift Novice MobiLift Novice MobiLift Refresher . Module 4 AIDS AWARENESS

• Keep in mind that the body harness will stretch about one half foot during a fall.

• You need to consider all the stretching factors of the harness, lanyard, and other components so you can judge your stopping distance if you fall. Your Trusted Source For Safety Training Solutions

• Using a different harness, begin by putting the arms through the shoulder straps and snap the chest strap with plastic snaps.

• Put the leg straps through the tongue buckles and adjust snug around your legs.

• Make sure you can touch the D-ring on back of the harness after these steps.

• Attach the shock-absorbing lanyard to the harness with the locking snap hook.

• Stopping Distance Let’s say you’re working on a bridge that’s 12 feet from the ground.

• You have a lanyard that’s six feet long, which means it will allow you to fall about six feet before the shock absorber comes into play.

• As the shock absorber comes up, it allows another three and a half feet to play out.

• The body harness will stretch about a half foot.

• Add in the distance from the D-ring to the worker’s feet, which is generally about four feet.

• Adding all this up, you fall 14 feet hitting the ground at 12 feet.

• There’s more to it than just thinking a six foot lanyard is going to stop you at six feet.

• Many lanyards are only three feet because of the stopping distance required.

Outline

A telescopic handler is a machine widely used in construction and agriculture. It is similar in appearance and function to a forklift, with the increased versatility of a single telescopic boom that can extend forwards and upwards from the vehicle. On the end of the boom the operator can fit several different attachments such as a bucket, pallet forks, winch, hook etc.In construction, the most common attachment for a telehandler is pallet forks, and the most common application is to move loads from place to place that would unreachable for a conventional forklift. Telescopic handlers have the ability to remove palletised loads from within a trailer and to place loads on rooftops and other high places. The latter application would otherwise require a crane, which is not always practical or time/cost efficient. The telescopic handler is now built in many sizes from small industrial, all terrain and 360 slew machines

Rigger Level 1

Riggers are those individuals who specialize in lifting and moving extremely large and heavy

objects. As this is a labor intensive and potentially dangerous job, formal rigger training is

required. A qualified rigger is needed during assembly/disassembly of cranes, when

employees are engaged in hooking, unhooking, or guiding the load, or in the initial connection

of a load to a component or structure and are within the fall zone. A qualified rigger is defined

as a qualified person who, by possession of a recognized degree, certificate or professional

standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training and experience, successfully demonstrated

the ability to solve/resolve problems relating to rigging. NCCCO certified riggers meet this

requirement [1926.1404; 1926.1425]. This course brings all of the rigging concerns into focus

for a practical, field proven method of ensuring rigging safety. Class size is limited to 10.

Topics:

• OSHA regulations, §1926 and §1910

• Wire rope slings and proper use

• Synthetic web slings and proper use

• Round slings and proper use

• Chain slings and proper use

• Rigging hardware and proper use

• Below-the-hook lifting devices

• Pre-use sling and gear inspection

• Softeners and sling protection

• Sling hitches and applications

• How to verify working load limit

• Sling & hardware rating charts

• Sling angles and angle stress

• Load balance and center of gravity

• How to determine load weight

• Manufacturer’s instructions

• Understanding the fall zone

Skid-steers are mostly known as Bobcats. Skid steer loaders are often looked down upon by construction crews, yet they are one of the busiest and most versatile machines in use. In fact, many operators will brag that if a skid steer can’t do it, then it can’t be done. It’s a hard claim to argue against actually considering the range of attachments that can be used with a skid steer.

One of the real benefits to a skid steer is their maneuverability. Being small, and being able to turn in their own tracks, they can get in and out of most places. Being four wheel drive, they can work well in snow or mud, and in the unlikely event they get stuck, they can use their bucket to push themselves out.

The most common attachments in use are a bucket and a set of forks. However, you can also attach post hole diggers, trenchers, grapples, and even a snow blower, and that’s just the tip of the attachment iceberg. Skid steers can dig holes, load trucks, clear snow, push dirt, gravel, or sand, carry heavy items, spread dirt, gravel, or sand, back-drag dirt, gravel, or sand to achieve a level finish, shave turf strips, and dig trenches

Skid steers are used everywhere from farms to the construction industry. However, their real home is in landscape gardening where this one tool can do a variety of jobs, including carrying and holding large plants that are being transplanted. Compared to their larger cousins, skid steer loaders are also easy to transport. The can be driven onto a small flatbed and towed by any decent-sized vehicle. While skid steer loaders are small, they can be tricky to operate, especially for a novice. Heavy equipment training prepares an individual to operate a wide range of heavy equipment including skid steer loaders. Looking for variety, a skid steer loader operator certainly experiences that.

Our Professional Safety Training Services provides complete safety training that is dedicated to meeting the unique needs of the construction industry. Our Professional Safety Training Services deliver innovative health and safety training, support, consultation and resources for the construction industry.

Objective The graduate of the program will acquire the skills and knowledge required to

become a safe entry-level Skid-steer Operator.

A pedestrian stacker is a type of forklift where the operator walks behind it. It is made to raise and stack pallets in a warehouse. All Pedestrian Stacker Trucks are moved through electric power, meaning an operator walks behind the forklift to move it backwards and forwards. Ped Stackers are made for stacking and lifting onto warehouse shelving, so the lifting height potential of the truck is typically high they also have a relatively high lifting weight. These forklifts have an arm that the operator holds onto, moves and has buttons that make the forklift move back and forth or lift, respectively. The controls are simple to use, so operators can learn to use these pallet stackers quickly and efficiently.

Pedestrian Stacker Training Course Objectives By the end of the course the operator should be able to:

• Carry out a pre-start inspection.

• Load and unload vehicles (from loading bay ramp).
