Preparing for an Emergency

Know the campus Emergency Procedures

(as per flipcharts and signage)

Know where the Assembly area is for each block you are in

Know the location of the nearest fire alarm call point

Know where to find a first aider

and a First Aid kit

Emergency Evacuation

• When you hear a fire alarm:

- Leave the room immediately by the nearest safe exit

- Walk, don’t run

- Follow the exit signs

- Merge like a zip

- Do not use lifts

- Do not go back inside the building (for any reason)

- Proceed to the assembly area and remain there until the all clear is given

- Always follow the instructions given by Staff & Fire Wardens

BEFORE an earthquake: identify safe places in your area:• Under tables/desks/lecture bench (remember to hold on to the table legs)

• Next to an interior wall

DURING an earthquake

DROP, COVER & HOLD • If inside stay inside

(Stay away from anything that could fall on you)• Don’t leave until shaking stops.

• If trapped in a lift activate control panel, stay calm, wait for assistance

If outside: move to an open space away from buildings, power lines, streetlights go to holding area.

AFTER an earthquake, follow the directions of Staff & Wardens

• During an evacuation and only if safe and in close reach

take your: • handbag/wallet/bag

• car keys  • orange emergency back pack

(staff only)

You must not take personal items if it delays your exit in anyway

Injury Reporting

If you injure yourself on campus, practicum or field trip it must be reported: (includes near misses)

Obtain a Massey University ‘Accident/Incident’ report form available from your course administrator, the Contact Centre or the Massey University Health & Safety Website

Fill in the form and hand it in to your course administrator

Maintenance or damage - report to FM reception. Ex 63333

Why report ? – so that the issue can be investigated to prevent similar injuries

Security & Safety

• Carry your student ID card on you at all times• Do not allow people you do not know into the buildings after hours; if they are

allowed access they should have an access card• Never leave your valuables unattended

• CHECK IN CHECK OUT - studying/working alone on campus, let someone or security know you will be working late, the location & the time you expect to finish.

• In the evenings, stick to areas that have other people around & that are well lit. If you feel nervous use the buddy system or call Campus Security for assistance.

• Contact Campus Security (24 hours/7days a week) with questions or concerns or if you need an escort you to your car, taxi or bus stop after hours.

Smoke Free Policy

• All campus buildings are totally smoke free

• Campus grounds are smoke free except for designated smoking areas

• The smoke free policy applies 24/7

• All staff, students, visitors and contractors are expected to abide by the smoke free

policy

• Discipline may occur if the policy is breached

1. Gazebo (Entrance A)

2. Tussock Café & Bar – Gazebo only

3. Museum Building (Block 10) – East side - grassy area beyond carpark.
