WorkSafe Victoria Health and Safety Statistics Victorian Mining, Exploration and Extractive Industries October 2016 WorkSafe Victoria annually collects safety information from Earth Resource related workplaces which includes the following tenement and licence types: Mining Tenements; Work Authorities; Tourist Mine Authorities; Tourist Fossicking Authorities; Retention Licences; Prospecting Licences; and Exploration Licences. The type of data collected from the above workplaces includes the following: Number of employees including contractors; Total employee hours worked including contractors and overtime; Number of incidents/near misses including contractors; Number of Lost Time Injuries (LTIs) including contractors; Number of days lost to LTIs in including contractors; and Number of fatalities including contractors. The above information is tabulated and processed by year in order to calculate lagging indicators as shown within the below table. Lost Time Injury (LTI): A work injury which results in an inability to work for at least the next full rostered shift any time after the day or shift on which the injury occurs. LTI Frequency Rate (LTIFR): The number of lost time injuries in the selected period per million hours worked (LTIFR = LTIs/hours worked X 1,000,000 hours worked). LTI Incident Rate (LTIIR): The number of injuries per 1,000 employees for an annualised equivalent of the period under review (LTIIR = LTIs / No of workers X 1,000). LTI Duration Rate (LTIDR): The average number of days lost per LTI (LTIDR = Days Lost / LTIs). No of Incidents: Any incidents other than LTIs and fatalities. Incident Frequency Rate (Incident FR): The number of incidents per million hours worked (Incident FR = Incidents / Hours worked X 1,000,000). The resulting safety statistics are graphed and presented by the material type explored or mined for as shown in the following table. Furthermore, an activity type (e.g. underground, open cut, sluicing, quarry or exploration) is assigned to each material type to provide safety performance information for each sub industry.

October 2016

WorkSafe Victoria annually collects safety information from Earth Resource related workplaces which includes the following tenement and licence types:

Mining Tenements;

Work Authorities;

Tourist Mine Authorities;

Tourist Fossicking Authorities;

Retention Licences;

Prospecting Licences; and

Exploration Licences.

The type of data collected from the above workplaces includes the following:

Number of employees including contractors;

Total employee hours worked including contractors and overtime;

Number of incidents/near misses including contractors;

Number of Lost Time Injuries (LTIs) including contractors;

Number of days lost to LTIs in including contractors; and

Number of fatalities including contractors.

Note: Annual safety data integrity is reliant on Earth Resource workplace operators responding to communication requests forwarded by WorkSafe Victoria; and in turn providing complete and correct information.

Activity Type

Underground: Includes operations where the predominant activity is carried out

underground (includes exploration).

Open Cut: Includes Open Cut mining operations (not quarrying) where the

processed material type is either Metaliferous, Brown Coal or Non-metalliferous.

Sluicing: Includes surface operations where the predominant activity is carried

out using sluicing techniques (i.e. water channelling).

Quarry: Includes surface mining activity where the processed material type is

classified as "Extractive".

Exploration (EL tenements): May include, but is not limited to, any of the

Material Types shown.
