Primary Components of Fitness

Cardiorespiratory capacity is the ability of the body to take in oxygen), deliver it to the cells, and use it at the cellular level to create energy for physical work. Some of the long-term adaptations of cardiorespiratory training are: decreased resting heart rate, decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, improved endurance, increased stroke volume and cardiac output.• Muscular capacity refers to the spectrum of muscular capability. This includes muscular endurance; muscular; and muscular power. Some of the long-term adaptations of improving muscular capacity are increased strength, improved muscular endurance, increased basal metabolic rate, improved joint strength, and overall posture.• Flexibility is the range of movement or amount of motion that a joint is capable of performing. Some of the long-term adaptations of improved flexibility are decreased risk of injury, improved range of motion, improved bodily movements, and improved posture.• Body composition is the proportion of fat-free to fat mass. Some of the long-term adaptations of improving body composition are decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, improved basal metabolic rate, improved bodily function, and improved BMI.

Why is it important to eat a healthy diet?

There is good evidence that eating a healthy diet can reduce your risk of obesity and

illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and some types of cancer.

The food you eat contains several different types of nutrients, which are all required for the

many vital processes in your body.

Importance of Vaccination

• Vaccination protects children from serious illness and complications of vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, mumps, and whooping cough

• Vaccination has led to a dramatic decline in the number of U.S. cases of several infectious diseases, some of these diseases are quite common in other countries and are brought to the U.S. by international travelers.

• If children aren’t vaccinated, they can spread disease to other children who are too young to be vaccinated or to people with weakened immune systems, such as transplant recipients and people with cancer. This could result in long-term complications and even death for these vulnerable people.

Oral Care• Regular dentist visits can do more than keep

your smile attractive – they can tell dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be developing a disease like diabetes.

• New research suggests that the health of your mouth mirrors the condition of your body as a whole. For example, when your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good, too. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems.

Poor Oral Health Can Lead To:

• Oral and facial pain. According to the Office of the Surgeon General, this pain may be largely due to infection of the gums that support the teeth and can lead to tooth loss. Gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease, and advanced gum disease affect more than 75 percent of the U.S. population.

• Problems with the heart and other major organs. Mouth infections can affect major organs. For example, the heart and heart valves can become inflamed by bacterial endocarditis, a condition that affects people with heart disease or anyone with damaged heart tissue.

• Digestion problems. Digestion begins with physical and chemical processes in the mouth, and problems here can lead to intestinal failure, irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive disorders.

What You Can Do

• See a dentist regularly Provide your dentist with a complete medical history and inform him or her of any recent health developments, even if they seem unrelated to your oral health.

• Practice good oral hygiene at home.• Brush for two to three minutes, at least twice a

day, with fluoridated toothpaste.• Floss daily to remove plaque from places your

toothbrush can't reach.• Eat a healthy.• Avoid cigarettes and tobacco products.• Exercise preventive care and schedule regular

dental.
