This avoids having to deal with answering services,” Beckwith continued. Beckwith has over 20 years experience in home health care management, owning a licensed daycare and running a volunteer city-wide referral service for families in need. She chose to become part of the Home Helpers family because of its philosophy to customize services for all ages. “Our promise is to care for each client as if we are caring for a loved one in our own family,” said Beckwith. “We recognize that our clients are the foundation of our business and we continually nurture this relationship. We value our clients’ trust in us and do all we can to give our families peace of mind knowing their loved one is happy, healthy and well cared for”  As an active member of the community , Beckwith is able to provide many other services and options. Home Helpers is a drug-free, smoke-free agency and only uses experienced caregivers who are insured, bonded and have had thorough background checks.  After 10 years of practicing optometry, L. Michelle McReynolds, O.D., opened her own practice this year in Kirkwood. “I started West County Vision Center because I wanted to create a personalized experience for each patient, from the length of the exam, finding the right employees and care for my patients, to the quality of frames and lenses,” Dr. McReynolds said. Dr. McReynolds’ paperless office is staffed by her mother, receptionist Anne Serkin, and Iona Edstrom, a certified optician with 18 years of experience. Going paperless allows the staff to have a patient’s record at their finge rtips quickly. “I believe strongly in patient education, so at the conclusion of each exam, I pro vide a written report of their diagnosis, visual acuity and treatment,” Dr. McReynolds said. Dr. McReynolds derives the most job satisfaction from ensuring that she has given her patients the most thorough eye examination possible. “It is important to stress that just because you have perfect eyesight, doesn’t mean you don’t need to have the health of your eyes evaluated,” she said. She is excited about 2 new French frame lines that the practice offers exclusively: Dilem and Exalto. Dilem frames have interchangeable temple pieces that allow patients to wear a “fun look” or a “conservative look,” depending on the occasion.   When Mary L. Kelly’s parents suffered health crises in2009, she learned firsthand the challenges of “caring for my family while providing care to my parents, all while jugglingmy career and other personal commitments,” she said.

She learned about Visiting Angels, a non-medical homehealth agency. Six months later, she left corporate Americato own her own Visiting Angels office.

“Many individuals want the opportunity to live at homeas long as possible,” Kelly said. “We help them realize thatopportunity.”

Kelly’s staff includes her sister, R.N. Kerri Kelly, andoperations manager, Jane Belanger. They provide assistance

with daily living activities such as bathing, medicationreminders, meal preparation, light housekeeping anderrands.

“Living at home with assistance can be a much moreaffordable alternative than moving to an assisted livingfacility,” Kelly said. Their services also complement adultday services.

As no two individuals have the same care requirements,Visiting Angels’ care plans are customized to each client. They can provide one- to 24-hour care on either a short-term or long-term basis.

Kelly finds the most satisfaction in “making a positiveimpact on the lives we touch by our care, whether that bedirectly to our care recipients or indirectly to theirfamilies.”

Kelly frequently receives compliments about the highcaliber of her care team and their exceptional service.

Jeanne Neuner of Webster Groves highly recommendsVisiting Angels.

“For over a year, Visiting Angels has provided a numberof services to a close relative with understanding of herspecific needs, while professionally attending to these needs

whether for two hours a week or 40,” Neuner said.

Of the 10 audiologists on staff at Sound Audiology, seven have completed their doctoral training, and twoare in the process of doctoral training. Dr. Russ Pickett,Director of Audiology at Sound Audiology, said thatseeing an audiologist is often less expensive than seeing atraditional “hearing aid dispenser,” but there is a vastdifference in education and training. “We do not usetraditional hearing aid dispensers as we feel they lack thetraining and knowledge to correctly treat hearing loss,”Dr. Pickett said.

“Many have been to one of the traditional retailersand have come away feeling pressured and that there wasa lack of professionalism,” Dr. Pickett said. “I alwaystreat patients with respect and position myself as theiradvocate in achieving better hearing.”

“Hearing aids have become smaller, smarter & moreeffective. They are fitted utilizing a ‘prescription’ so that thedevice’s performance is specific to the user.” Dr. Pickett added.

At Sound Audiology, a patient has a choice amongmultiple products to best address his or her particular need.

Though 17 percent of adult Americans have somedegree of hearing loss, only one in five who could benefitfrom hearing aids actually use them, Dr. Pickett said.Sound Audiology takes a professional, honest, straightforward approach to hearing problems.

Dr. Pickett said the long-time friendships he hasdeveloped with patients over the years add to the senseof fulfillment he feels as a helping professional.
