APA Style Checklist
Some assessments are submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc), some are uploaded as a PDF. Images of documents are not accepted.
Cover sheet is the first page
Each page numbered in the top right hand corner (use the header)
Header also needs your full name and unit name
Size 12, Times New Roman font
Margins of 2.54 cm (normal margin)
Double-spacing with no extra line space between paragraphs
Text is aligned to the left
Indentation for first line of every paragraph at 1.25cm (one tab)
Reference list has hanging indents of 1.25cm

Save the File properly
Save your file in the Microsoft Word (or PDF, as required) format with the following details: First and last name, Unit Name Assignment number For example:
Name Surname_HLTENN001_ Assign 1Insert a Header with
Name Unit Page number
Open the Header Go to the Insert tab, Select Page number Then select top of page and plain
(number 3 so that it’s on the right hand side)
Once this is inserted: 1. Type your name on the left side 2. Type your unit name in the centre
Using Headings Most reports and case studies include headings but not all papers do. Check with your educator. For example:
Summary of the Case
Format headings as follows: Title case (all important words start with
a capital letter, but not words like ‘a’, ‘and’, ‘or’)
Centred on the page In bold font but not underlined
Normal Margins To set the margins Go to Page Layout tab Click on Margins Click Normal
Font: Times New Roman, Size 12
Highlight the whole essay and the reference list. From the Home tab go to Font Change the font to Times New Roman
from drop down menu Next to that, change the font size to
number 12 from the drop down menu

Double-spacing The whole assignment including the reference list must be double-spaced. Click on the Home tab Go to the Paragraph section Expand and go to Line spacing Then click 2.0
Indent each paragraph
Highlight the assignment first not including the reference list
METHOD AGo to the Home tab then: Go to Paragraph dialogue box (expand it ) Go to Indents and Spacing Go to Indentation Go to Special Then choose First line(make sure the Spacing is on zero before and after)
METHOD BYou can do this as you go by clicking Tab on your keyboard before you start a new paragraph.

Title the page References
References title centred Type the word References Highlight the word with your cursor Then got to Home tab Go to Paragraph and click the centred
lines
Hanging indent for each entry
Go to the Home tab then: Go to Paragraph dialogue box
(expand it) Go to Indents and Spacing Go to Indentation Go to Special Then choose Hanging (It is useful to make sure the Spacing is on zero before and after.)
Entries are in alphabetical order
Each entry is organised in alphabetical order. Highlight the reference list, but DO NOT INCLUDE the heading References Go to the Home tab Go to Paragraph Go to Sort (which looks like A to Z) Don’t change anything in the dialogue
box that opens, just click OK Check that it hasn’t stranded or mixed
up any of your references, especially the URLs
Italics for titles Book titles, Journal titles and volume numbers need to be in italics. Highlight the title with your cursor Click on Home tab Go to Font dialogue box and
Click on the I for italics
Remove Hyperlinks To remove hyperlinks, Highlight the URL Right click Choose Remove Hyperlink.For example,With hyperlink: http://www.healthskills.com.au/ Without the hyperlink: http://www.healthskills.com.au/
The doi is included The doi should start with
http://dx.doi.org/:10
Most academic journal articles have a doi. Make sure you include it.For example:http://dx.doi.org/:10.1080/08873267.2013.779906
