Introduction
You have been has asked to help redesign the layout of the
dining room in your setting.
You will need to:
• Work out the area of the room so you can purchase some
new furniture
• Calculate how much money you will need
• Once you have completed the task, discuss this with your
workplace mentor.
Equipment
It would be useful to have the following:
A calculator
A pen, pencil and eraser
There is a section at the back of this booklet for any notes
you want to make.

• Carry out calculations with numbers of a size
• Find the area of a shape

Task 1
Your first job is to measure the room. Record the measurements of the room you are working in so you
know exactly how much space you have to fit your new furniture into.

Task 2
Choose from the images overleaf to decide on what you may wish to purchase for your new room.
The manager has told you to purchase some tables, chairs and storage space.
Note how much each one costs and the measurements of each.

Task 3
You want to work out how much it will cost to redesign the layout of the room and purchase the
furniture. The budget given by the manager is £3000. You know which items you need to buy. Work out
how many of each you can buy of the required furniture to ensure the room is usable, but has as many
tables and chairs as possible and at least one storage unit that fits in the room.
What is the remaining balance?

To ensure the furniture is going to fit in the room, draw up a plan linking with the room measurements
you have already completed.
