As we begin to embrace the new changes of healthcare reform, there are so many great things happening at Methodist North. I would like to share with you just a few of the ways we are working to provide the best quality and most efficient care for you and your family. I am very proud of our amazing cardiac program. Lead by a blend of tenured physicians from both Sutherland Cardiology and the community-at-large and staffed by fantastic, caring hospital Associates, our cardiac program is one of the best in the area. In fact, Methodist Hospital of Memphis was recently recognized yet again by U.S. News & World Report as the best hospital in Memphis for cardiology & heart surgery. We’ve also earned the Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction ® Center for Cardiac Care, which is awarded to organizations that demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients. From a routine checkup to open heart surgery, Methodist North provides comprehensive treatment and has among the highest survival rates for heart attacks in the Memphis area. We are also growing our hospitalist program to further enhance the quality of care delivered to our patients. A hospitalist is a doctor who specializes in caring for patients while in the hospital. Since they are hospital-based, a hospitalist is more available to patients and can spend more time answering questions, following up on lab results, talking with specialists and visiting with families. They also work closely with your primary care physician to promote follow-up care. With a large number of hospitalists already on staff and more joining this summer, Methodist North is ensuring that we continue to provide highly individualized care. See the article on Page 2 for more information about hospitalists. At Methodist North, we are working diligently to care for our community, and we want you to know it, because you deserve it. A message to the community from Methodist North’s CEO

Be treated well

Methodist North welcomes community to annual Health Festival

Dear Friends:These are truly exciting times in healthcare.

We’ve also earned the Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction® Center for Cardiac Care, which is awarded to organizations that demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients.

I hope that you enjoy this edition of our community newsletter and always know that we are your partner in care.

Yours in service,

Gyasi C. ChisleyCEO, Methodist North Hospital Sr. Vice President, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare

The fair featured free health screenings, CPR classes, fun exercise demonstrations, a healthy cooking demonstration and many health-related vendors. In addition, there were games, performances by Shiloh Baptist Church Choir and a live radio remote.

We invite everyone to come out again next spring and join in the healthy, family fun!

If you’ve been a patient in a hospital recently, you may have been cared for by a hospitalist doctor. Hospitalists are a valuable part of Methodist North’s care team, but many people are unaware of what a hospitalist is and does.

A hospitalist is a doctor who specializes in treating patients while they’re in the hospital. They’ve undergone the same training as other doctors including medical school, residency training and board certification examination. While they’re caring for you, they work very closely with your doctor and share information about you and your care.

How is a hospitalist doctor different from my regular doctor?• Hospitalists specialize in hospital care and spend most or all of

their workday in the hospital. Other doctors specialize in office care and see patients in the hospital and in an office or clinic.

• Hospitalists focus on caring for serious illnesses that need a hospital stay. Office physicians focus on caring for more common illnesses and keeping you from becoming sick.

How does a hospitalist benefit me?• Hospitalists only focus on patients in the hospital, so they become

very familiar with you and your needs.• Since hospitalists spend most or all of their workday in the

hospital, they are more available to you. They can spend more time answering your questions, following up on your lab results, talking with specialists about your care and visiting you to help you get better.

• When you have an office visit with your regular doctor, he or she can focus on you, because a hospitalist is caring for his or her patients in the hospital.

Next time you or someone you know is admitted to the hospital, you can feel confident knowing that a hospitalist doctor is part of the care team.

What people are saying about Methodist NorthHere is a note we recently received from a patient:

After going to Methodist North ER, I was admitted to the hospital. During my stay, I received great care by many medical professionals. A portion of this time was spent in the CVICU, and I had the most attentive nurses. They were excellent caretakers and looked after me so well. They answered questions and gave much comfort. I was impressed with them, and I appreciated their attention to detail. Thanks everyone for the great care!
