‘Double-Energy Twins’ Latest Book Helps People Drop Pounds, Increase EnergyFor those feeling listless and
sluggish with no energy, theZucker twins may have a solu-tion.
The “dynamic duo” of Judiand Shari Zucker who’ve dubbedthemselves “The Double-EnergyTwins” have just published theirfourth book, The Double EnergyDiet, with the slogan “Improveyour health and vitality natural-ly.”
The twins will sign copies onSunday, Sept 7 from 3 to 5 p.m. atWhole Foods, 239 N. CrescentDr., in Beverly Hills
A healthy lifestyle is not newto the twins, now 47, who grewup in Beverly Hills and wereintroduced to vegetarianism byHawthorne Elementary art tea-cher John McCutchen.
Inspired by a mother whowas a “bad cook,” they developedtheir own recipes, “experimentingand taking the sugar out of BettyCrocker recipes,” Judi Zuckersaid.
With help from their bookpublicist father Irwin Zucker, their efforts became the cook-
book, How To Survive SnackAttacks Naturally. Publishedwhile they were 17-year-oldBeverly High students, the booksold 35,000 copies and earnedthem numerous radio interviewsand TV appearances with suchpersonalities as Merv Griffin andRegis Philbin. (Mom Devra Z.Hill Zucker is also a writer.)
Recipes, 70 sugar-free plant-based ones, are also part of thelatest book.
The book was written to helppeople attain a healthy weight, fulfill nutritional needs, reducethe amount of fat in meals, savetime and money in the kitchenand satisfy both physical hungerand psychological cravings. Sothe recipes encourage organicingredients, have no more thanfive steps, are vegan friendly,“good for diabetics,” and mostimportant, the twins say, are fla-vorful.
Three years in the making, the book is their response to threemain factors: their disgust withfad diets that don’t work; their
anger with misconceptions aboutcarbs—“We’re big advocates forcomplex carbohydrates,” ShariZucker said—and requests fromstudents.
Residents of Santa Barbara, the sisters taught “Mommy andMe” cooking classes in Monte-cito advocating their veganrecipes and lifestyle. “Peopleasked us how we do it, andrequested the recipes, so wedecided to to the book,” ShariZucker said.
Readers can double theirenergy and improve their health, the twins say, by:
• Eating “upper” foods and
voiding “downer” foods.Upper foods include the
“eight greats”—flaxseed, nuts, berries, sprouts, apples, water, oatmeal and soybeans.
Downer foods include meatswith saturated fats and choles-terol, and beverages like alcohol, those with caffeine and softdrinks.
• Following the “LML” plan—eating a light breakfast, moder-ate lunch and light dinner.
• Enjoying regular aerobicexercise.
Researching the book wasnot hard, Judi Zucker said.Besides their lifelong passion for
health and nutrition, the twinshave degrees in ergonomics, thestudy of human physiology, phys-ical education and nutrition fromUC Santa Barbara and numeroussources in the field; like well-known health writer Dr. EarlMindell, who wrote the forwardfor the book.
The book looks at variousaspects of energy including beingpositive and limiting time withnegative people. “Negative peo-ple can bring positive peopledown and deplete your energy,”Shari Zucker said.
They also point to the impor-tance of one’s environment, advocating the energy-flowingdesign principals of feng shui. Aclutter-free, plant-filled, well-designed home can increase ener-gy, the twins say.
There is also a chapter on“Raising Healthy Kids” and bothsisters have athletic childrenraised on the diet.
They are appalled, they say,by the number of young peoplesmoking and gulping down caf-feinated lattes and sugar-filledsports drinks.
“This has never been a fadfor us, it’s been a lifestyle sincehigh school,” Judi Zucker said.
And it paid off. Active intrack and field, in their junioryear they set the fastest one-mileand two-mile track records forBHHS. The two-mile record(11:11.7) still stands, and they arestill friends with coach CharlesKloes. They graduated in 1979.
