Healthcare Project Examples
Revenue Cycle Transformation
• Our client, with hospitals across 10 states
and growing rapidly through acquisition,
was experiencing challenges with technology
integration, unbilled receivables, cash
collections, days in accounts receivable, bad
debt and denials management.
• Faced with increased regulatory and business
requirements, the hospital’s leadership team
engaged Protiviti to assess its back-end revenue
cycle operations to identify areas for improvement
and to rapidly implement a strategic plan to achieve
ongoing, scalable and sustained performance goals.
• Within four months, our client achieved record
cash collections per month. Over the 7-8 month
project, cash to trailing net revenue increased
3.4 percent, or approximately $8 million, year over
year. Days in accounts receivable were reduced
by 10. Staff morale and productivity increased, and
billing errors decreased by more than 50 percent.
Revenue cycle operations were optimized and made
scalable to grow with the expanding organization.
A/P Shared Services Implementation
• Protiviti was selected as the implementation partner
to lead a reorganization effort of the finance and
accounting departments into a centralized shared
services environment. Protiviti’s A/P process
expertise provided numerous benefits to the client.
• The client was able to communicate clear respon-
sibilities and hold their staff members accountable
to their assigned roles, in turn reducing ambiguity.
• By collaborating with a third-party partner to
implement and configure a paperless invoice
imaging and workflow solution, Protiviti was able
to reduce the manual effort to prepare, ingest and
route invoices for approval and processing. The
centralization of a non-core business function
optimized headcount, resulting in annualized
savings across the enterprise.
• Finally, the department was able to significantly
reduce the number of invoices that were past
due and causing credit holds on crucial vendor-
provided goods and services
Cost Containment Benefits Validation
• Our client, a large nonprofit hospital system,
identified a future financial gap of $500 million
and implemented a new department and a five-year
strategic initiative to cut costs. Their first priority
was to quickly pursue savings opportunities, even
before they had developed a communication plan
and an effective way to quantify the benefits of the
program and confirm the realization of value
to close the identified financial gap.
• Within eight weeks, Protiviti was able to not only
design and implement a savings methodology
and tracking process that addressed a backlog of
26 projects with benefits valued at $26 million,
but also significantly eliminate inefficiencies
in the process used to quantify the benefit of
future projects.
• Additional improvements included a redesign
of the benefit measurement process to be more
efficient and involve finance up front; a governance
plan to manage the process; and a robust and
customized reporting database, as well as
forecasting tools and savings guidelines
HIPAA Assessment and Remediation
• Our client, operating stand-alone emergency
rooms across four states and growing rapidly,
wanted to better understand their HIPAA
compliance and information security posture
to identify any areas that required further risk
management and remediation.
• Protiviti performed a HIPAA Security Risk
Analysis and a HIPAA Gap Evaluation across
the Privacy, Security and Breach Notification
requirements. Through the performance of the
HIPAA Security Risk Analysis, Protiviti helped
to identify the repositories of electronic
protected health information (ePHI) within
the client’s environment, assessed controls,
identified key risks to this data, and worked
with client management to recommend and
develop risk management strategies.
• We also helped the client understand any areas
that needed to be bolstered to better meet the
requirements of the HIPAA regulations. As part

Third-Party Vendor Risk Management
• Our client, one of the largest nonprofit healthcare
delivery systems in the U.S., was seeking assistance
in designing and implementing an effective vendor
management framework that would allow them
to better identify and control risk associated with
third-party vendor relationships.
• Protiviti assessed processes, policies and
technologies to gain a better understanding
of current practices. That included attending
workshops to understand stakeholder roles and
responsibilities; identifying the client’s third-
party vendor services portfolio; and evaluating
existing procedures for managing contracts and
assessing risk criteria for various vendor types,
including those with offshoring sub-delegates.
• Protiviti provided real-time improvement
recommendations based on industry-leading
practices and regulatory requirements that would
allow the client to be better positioned to identify,
minimize and manage vendor risk on an ongoing
basis. Deliverables also included third-party
vendor oversight policies and an enhanced vendor
management methodology and framework.
