Fertility Screening

Traditionally, couples sought help in accessing their fertility after trying to conceive unsuccessfully for a

year. However, these days more couples are using this chance to check if they can safely delay getting

pregnant or just as a form of reassurance that everything is in working order prior to embarking on the

journey to get pregnant.

It is important to remember that both partners are required to make a baby and especially since men are

a contributing factor in up to 50% of all infertility cases, it is important that your doctor sees the both of

you as a couple.

What does fertility screening entail?

As with all consultations, the fertility screen starts with a thorough medical history, specifically looking at

potential obstacles to natural conception. A physical examination follows prior to the ordering of a

battery of tests.

The investigations required essentially determine if each individual component required in the baby

making process is free of complications. Typically this includes checking on ovulation (regular, monthly

release of the egg), tubal function, and abnormalities of the uterus such as fibroids and of course semen

quality.

Some of the tests done have to be timed carefully so your doctor will instruct you on when the blood

taking needs to be done. Typically, the whole process will last about 3 – 4 weeks with the final medical

review after the completion of the tests.

What happens after that?

If all systems are go, there is no cause of concern. However, do keep in mind that a percentage of couples

fail to conceive in spite of good results in the tests. Your doctor may suggest further testing of ovarian

reserve depending on your age and how long you wish to delay getting pregnant. Ovarian reserve is a

method of indirectly testing how many years of fertility you may have left.

In the event that an abnormality is picked up, medications, surgery or artificial insemination may be

suggested but the type as well as timing of intervention will need to be discussed with you and your

partner in detail.

Fertility screening has progressed by leaps and bounds so do see your doctor for further

Healthway Anti-Aging packages

As our understanding of ageing improves, our approach to aging changed. Aging is now treated as we do

any disease and there are interventions available that can drastically improve our quality in life.

The signs and symptoms of ageing are better documented in women and has been attributed to the

cessation of hormone production at menopause. In men, andropause is now getting increasingly more

recognised as a true problem. Unfortunately, lack of awareness, knowledge and in some cases

embarrassment as led many to seek help late of not at all.

In women, there are several changes that happen at menopause that can have a significant impact on

health. These include:

• Increase rate of bone loss

• Change in cholesterol profile

• Increase risk of urinary incontinence and infections

• Vaginal dryness and atrophy

This list is by no means exhaustive but shows just a fraction of the type of changes that can happen and

that can be modified to improve both health and well being.

Your doctor, after a medical assessment, can institute drug therapies as well as lifestyle modifications that

can help reduce or even reverse some of these changes.

In men, andropause has been linked with depression, loss of libido, erection problems and even

decreased bone loss. However since the onset is often insidious and progression slow, many just attribute

it to be a part of the ageing process and do not seek help. Even if they do, they seek help for a specific

problem that may aggravate the other symptoms of andropause. While hormonal replacement may not

be for every male undergoing andropause, it can result in significant improvements in quality of life in

those that are suitable.
