Devon SwiTCheD on its new NHS 111 service for the county on Tuesday 3 September. It covers the whole of Devon, including Plymouth and Torbay.

NHS 111 is a national initiative that is being rolled out across the country. It is a new three-digit dial telephone service introduced to make it easier for patients to access local health services when they have an urgent need.

Devon’s NHS 111 is commissioned by NEW Devon CCG, including Torbay. It is being provided by

South Western Ambulance Service Foundation Trust (SWASFT) over five years.

Dr Simon Scott-Hayward, GP clinical lead for Devon’s NHS 111 service said, “NHS 111 can help patients to navigate their way through the myriad NHS services. It is easy, free to access and will point patients to the best place to meet their urgent health needs.”

New cardiac arrhythmia service at North Devon District Hospital

Local people have their say on the future of healthcare in Torrington

An ArrhyThmiA care co-ordination service has been set up at North Devon District Hospital. It aims to improve the quality of initial and early care for patients with an irregular heartbeat, also known as arrhythmia.

An arrhythmia nurse has recently been recruited and welcomed into the cardiology team. The nurse will undertake a number of key functions, including the reporting and interpretation of the direct-access 24-hour electrocardiogram (ECG) test, patient education and ensuring patients achieve a therapeutic international normalised ratio (INr) before cardioversion.

over the coming months, the cardiology team and clinical pathway group will concentrate their efforts on collecting data to evidence the anticipated benefits associated with having a comprehensive arrhythmia support service in place for local patients.

Two public meetings will take place at The Plough Arts Centre, Torrington. Representatives from Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and GPs and healthcare managers from NEW Devon CCG will be on hand to answer any questions members of the public may have about the future of the hospital, as well as the new model of care.

Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group

The CCG and Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT) are continuing to seek ideas from local people about how Torrington Community Hospital can be best used in the long term.

At the same time they also want to hear the views of people on a model of care that will be tested in the Torrington area. This focuses on supporting people to live safely and independently in their own homes where this is what they would prefer rather than be cared for in hospital.

Thursday 12 September, 6pm to 7.45pm

Saturday 14 September, 10am to 12pm

The CCG’S eastern locality has appointed six patient representatives, also known as lay members, to the three sub-localities of Exeter, Wakley and WEB (Woodbury, Exmouth Budleigh). The lay members will work with the sub-localities to make sure there is patient representation and a public voice throughout decision-making processes. The lay members are passionate about health improvement and will help the locality to establish local priorities for healthcare, taking a broad view across the area.

NHs services and were asked for their thoughts about the CCG’s website.

Community relations manager keri ross is pictured here giving a presentation

about local health services to foreign language students in exmouth.

PeoPle from across Exeter and the market towns of East and Mid Devon have been telling the CCG what healthcare services they would like to see provided in the future.

over the past few months local GPs and healthcare managers ran public engagement events where they explained their vision of future health services and gave people an opportunity to voice their opinion.

Attendees discussed their local health and social care priorities, as well as what works well and what could be improved.

Many ideas came out of the events and will now be developed before being taken back to local people for a second round of public engagement events.

In November further work on developing options with associated costs will be carried out and the CCG will start describing the services it hopes to commission.

There will be opportunities for people to be involved before any services are commissioned.

Page 4: Healthy people september final b&w

The CCG wants to improve NHS services by making sure patients and service users have more of a say. one example where this is happening in Plymouth is where the CCG’s Patient Advice and liaison Service (PAlS) has been working closely with Plymouth People First (PPF), a self-advocacy

organisation for adults with a learning disability in Plymouth.

The group provides an opportunity for this vulnerable group of people to voice their concerns, talk to other people and find out about their rights.

The PPF has worked closely with PAlS to take part in a series of mystery shopper exercises.

one of the exercises was undertaken by four adults with learning difficulties where each member of the group contacted a service to ask a number of questions in order to find out whether they met the needs of their vulnerable group. The results of this exercise have been recorded and evaluated, and will be used by the CCG.

For more information about this project or if you know of any other areas that the patient experience team could help and be involved with, contact verity Trawford, of the CCG’s patient experience team, on 01392 356 170.

New locality home

The CCG’S western arm has relocated to Windsor House to share an office with Plymouth City Council.

The idea to co-locate with the city council was developed two years ago so the council and NHS could work more collaboratively to better serve the people of Plymouth and surrounding area.

COMMUNITY SERvICES: HAvE YOUR SAYThe ConTrACTS through which community health services, such as physiotherapy, health promotion and community nursing, in the western area of Devon are provided are nearly at an end so the CCG needs to look at how community services will be provided and by whom.

The locality is planning to run a number of its own events across the locality from now until the end of November, and will also attend others, so that people can share their thoughts, suggestions and ideas on the future of these services.

Sally Parker, community relations manager, said: “We want to know what helps you stay healthy if you are well, and what helps you stay independent and able to manage your condition if you have one. So please come to see us at one of the forthcoming events. We want to commission services in the community which are right for you now and in the future and we cannot do this without your input.”

We are working together more closely than ever and the co-location gives us a great platform for adding momentum to our joint vision around integration to improve the services we offer to the population we serve. JErry CloUGH, WESTErN loCAlITy MANAGING DIrECTor

RURAL SERvICES NETWORK

mAny PeoPle in Devon live in rural and isolated communities and one of the CCG’s objectives is to make sure that everyone who wishes to do so is able to be involved in making decisions about healthcare.

The CCG is a member of the rural Health Services Network and this month our community relations manager met the network co-ordinator to explore how the two organisations could help each other to make sure that people living in rural communities in the western locality were included and involved.

we’ve been listening to you about our website and will make improvements based on your thoughts very shortly. The website launched at the start of April and it is already full of information about the CCG, its boards, local events, and much more.

However, the site is still very much under development. New information is constantly being added and the CCG has had plenty of feedback and suggestions from the public about how it could be improved.

During June and July, website focus groups were held with members of the public in each of the three CCG localities. Attendees were asked to view a demonstration of the website then provide specific feedback on its design, content, accessibility and functionality. All feedback has now been collated and a list of actions will be reviewed so further developments and changes can get underway to improve the website.

PATienTS in Devon have joined commissioners and healthcare providers to find out about how diabetes services could be developed for the future.

An event held in Plymouth recently was attended by consultants, patients, GPs and CCG staff.

A video of patients with type 1 diabetes speaking about their experiences of diabetes care in the present day was shown. Stories of patients with type two diabetes were also shared.

Through the day the group looked at how the service is provided now, including what works well. Another priority was to discuss how it could be ensured that patients who need it get the right level of support and care.

The contribution from patients at the event was invaluable and will help the CCG and healthcare providers to shape a service that better meets the needs of people with diabetes.

ArounD 70 people, including Devon Partnership NHS Trust (DPT) staff, governors, contractors and civil dignitaries, gathered to watch HrH The Princess royal unveil a commemorative plaque at the Dewnans Centre this summer.

The unveiling followed a short tour of the facility during which Her royal Highness was escorted by Sue Speak and Dr John Parker, both from DPT. Along the way she was introduced to a number of different groups of people, including the Dewnans Centre Project Team, and

asked about the work of the Trust and the wider mental health arena.

Before she left in her helicopter, which landed on the site’s football field, HrH was presented with a posy by Janet Halling, a business administrator at langdon Hospital.

HRH visit a great success

Research trial into snoring brings new hope for sufferers A CliniCAl trial at the royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (rD&E) aimed at finding a solution to the age-old problem of snoring has received international recognition. News reporters from as far away as Brazil visited the hospital to film the consultant who led the trial, which showed that certain singing exercises help reduce snoring in people with a history of simple snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea (oSA).

Consultant otolaryngologist Malcolm Hilton began the trial after being contacted by a singing teacher, Alise ojay, with a quirky idea. He said: “Alise told me that a number of people had benefitted from the singing exercise programme she had devised to strengthen the throat muscles. I then set up this trial; the results have been really interesting.”

60 chronic snorers and 60 people with mild to moderate oSA took part. Half of each group did the singing exercises for three months and half did not. At the end of the trial the singers had improved significantly on ratings of snoring and sleep quality, while the comparison group did not change.

Malcolm Hilton said: “This opens up a whole new avenue of potential treatment which avoids surgery, so it is definitely good news. However, it must be used in conjunction with lifestyle changes. Being overweight, for example, is the biggest single independent predictor of snoring.”

INTRODUCING THE NEW DRSS WEBSITE The new Devon referral Support Services (DrSS) website was launched in August. It contains information about the Devon Access and referral Team (DArT) and the Tamar referral Appointments Centre (TrAC). In response to feedback the site has a refreshed layout and easy-to-navigate menu. It is a useful resource, full of information for GP practices, providers and staff.

NEW MENTAL HEALTH ACCOMMODATION IN PLYMOUTH

The CCG has listened to patients, service users and local people with an interest in mental health and identified a need for supported accommodation to facilitate discharge from hospital to ensure a smooth transition for patients into the into the community. This would also prevent unnecessary admission into hospital.

Some of the services have been brought together into a single contract where there is now 24-hour cover.

The service helps people recovering from mental health issues to live independently again and the changes will now mean better outcomes for the patient.

New DevoN CCG is currently running a series of workshops to support its staff to put the individual at the centre of their decision making.

The CCG’s commissioning team for wheelchair services in Plymouth is taking part in the project. The team will use its findings to speak to wheelchair users and providers of the service to review, examine and consider the way the service is currently run and how it could be improved in the future.

Families’ experiences of the service will set the backdrop of the team’s involvement in the project.

Individuals at the centre project DEvON DEFENDS AGAINST FLUAs autumn approaches, people in Devon are being reminded to get vaccinated against seasonal flu to protect themselves and other people in the community.
