Do’s :-

with you all the way

Be open, tell others you have difficulty hearing

Get the speaker to catch your attention beforetalking and watch their lips, gestures and facialexpressions

Ask the speaker to face you and be in good lightso you can watch the speaker’s lips.

Ask them to rephrase it rather than repeat it ifdon’t hear initially and to speak slower

Try to find out what the topic of conversation is -an awareness of the subject makes it easier tofollow conversation

Try to keep calm, if you reflect for too long onwhat you missed it will be harder to rejoin theconversation

Use hearing aids if you have them.

Keep the talker’s face clearly visible and in thelight

If you hear better on one side, ask friends andfamily to sit next to that side when talking toyou

In churches, theatres and similar, sit near thefront and use the loop system if possible

In pubs and restaurants, try to sit away from anyloudspeakers, and in a corner or with your backto the wall. This reduces background noises

Turn off, or move away from, TV, radio or noisyhousehold appliances

Discourage people from trying to talk to youfrom a different room

Close any doors or windows that let inadditional noise

In your own home choose soft furnishings (thickcarpets and heavy curtains) and double-glazing

When listening to the TV or a music system, useheadphones or a loop system with your hearingaid so you can reduce the volume on the TV. Ifthe sound is distorted turn it down; increase thetreble for listening to speech and the bass whenlistening to music.

Don’t’s :-

Don’t stand too far away from the speaker andask them not to turn away from you whentalking

Don’t be too hard on yourself. No one hearscorrectly all the time

Don’t bluff, a good communicator will clarifywhat they have said if you look puzzled

Don’t let others simply shout this distorts sound

Don’t let others talk to you from a differentroom ask them to join you or you go to them.
