As Scout Executive, I truly enjoy visiting camp, meeting with our unit leaders and seeing the Scouting program in action. This summer I attended a leaders meeting in each camp for all sessions at Bartle and also at Naish. I picked up some great ideas. It also gave me an opportunity to ask lots of ques-tions and share some thoughts on where the council is going.

A few things I learned this summer:• The new salad bars at Bartle were a hit

with our Scouts and leaders! I learned that a Scout can go to the salad bar and come back with everything except the salad…… croutons, cheese and bacon bits.

• Our camp staff members are some of the finest. The Camp Staff Scholarship program, established about 10 years ago, is an outstanding way to retain our best staff members. This summer the Coun-cil awarded over $72,000 in Camp Staff Scholarships. I would love to see this endowed fund continue to grow.

• This was the third year of our on-line merit badge class tracking system. While we still have some work to do, it is a good tool to keep up on our Scouts’ merit badge progress.

• As I shared the news of our new “skilled trade weekends” at Bartle and Naish this fall, I found that many of our Scouting leaders are pleased to help in the long term maintenance of our camps. This is a win/win for our camps and our youth!

• The volunteer Commissioner program at both camps is one of the finest additions I have ever seen. Having over 60 dedicated volunteers each session allows us to main-

tain a high level of customer service and Scouting knowledge.

• The Chaplain’s program… For many of our Scouts this is their first real exposure to any religion. We have a beautiful setting and a great team of Chaplains... A Scout is Reverent.

• Our Cub Scout Camping and Day Camp programs are on target. This is a direct correlation to our strong team of staff and volunteers.

• The Tribe of Mic-O-Say is magical. I was impressed by its lasting positive impact on our Scouts and leaders.

• Some areas of future focus include a review of our check-in process. We need to make more efficient use of everyone’s time.

• Also, we need better camp promotion. It is our responsibility to see that even more Scouts attend. This summer our Council provided over $95,000 in campership as-sistance for our Scouts.

We can be proud of our summer programs and traditions. But we must look at our programs and facilities to ensure every Scout has a quality experience.

I welcome your thoughts. Feel free to call or send an e-mail. I will get back with you.

It is great to be serving as the Scout Execu-tive for such an outstanding Council. Let’s see what we can do to make it even better!

BeAScout:Putting scouting on the Map!

Have you heard? The BSA is using the Internet to build on our annual recruiting efforts! And the recruiting campaign is called BeAScout.

BeAScout is for parents, unit leaders, and council staff. Everyone has a role to play that can help people sign up for Scouting.

Using their MyScouting ac-counts, unit leaders can personalize the pins that will appear on the Google map. The committee chairperson and the chartered organiza-tion representative can also do this.

Visit BeAScout.org to check it out and then sign into your MyScouting account to add or change your unit’s contact and meeting information.

As your Council Commissioner, I have been asked to periodically pen (does anyone still use pen and paper?) a short note for Adventures in Scouting. As Scouters we all share a common goal: to provide a well-planned program, delivered by a trained leader, with a strong outdoor program, in order to attract and retain youth. Each commissioner brings with him or her a knowledge base of experiences that can serve as a resource to help all of us achieve that goal.

Our annual School Night for Scouting recruitment drive is about to begin. The commissioner staff will be very active over the next couple of months supporting our School Night for Scouting effort. They will be working as school coordinators, arranging for use of school facilities, helping with new leader orientation and encouraging them to take leader training. Be sure to keep your unit commissioner included in your plans and rely on their experience as we add thousands of new Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers.

Yours in Scouting,Jim Bernard Jr., Council Commissioner

school night to Join scouting is Here!

More Than 5,000 Youth Expected to Enroll!

School Night for Scouting orientations, kickoffs, and training sessions are nearly complete. Cub Family Campouts are planned for the upcoming weeks and months. The end result… More young people and their families will enjoy the benefits of Scouting.

• “School Nights” organized and run by district volunteer teams at every elementary school in the Heart of America Council.

• Cub Scout Leader Training – Conducted in every district, usually on Saturdays (and in some cases on weeknights)

during the month of September.• Cub Scout Family Campouts – An overnight event for Cub Scouts and families in late Sept/early Oct. – Organized activities and food provided for all.

Cub Scout Pack’s Role in School Night:• Assign a pack School Night Representative to communicate and work with the district

School Night team. • Conduct a “Back to the Pack” summer meeting prior to School Night for all returning

Cub Scouts. • Communicate with the School Night leadership any unique needs/interests of the pack

that School Night might help meet (Prior to School Night).• Participate in your district-wide School Night Kickoff • Ensure pack leadership attends School Night to receive applications and greet new lead-

ers and new Cub Scouts!

Philmont’s Major gifts Fellowship week

october 3-7, 2011 The James E West Fellowship Ambassadors are organizing a council Philmont Contingent for James E, West Fellows, 1910 Society members, Founders Circle members and their spouses. We will join fellow Scouters from across the country at the Philmont Training Center.

Our trek will be fun and relaxing. Spend the mornings in class discussing retirement plan-ning, estates, trusts, and more. Spend the afternoons on behind-the-scenes backcountry trips by vehicle (or on foot). We will even take Wednesday off. Northern New Mexico is beautiful in the fall.

The Major Gifts Fellowship Week is October 3-7, 2011. The cost is $550 per participant and $350 per spouse. Participants are housed in private cabins.

If you are interested, contact Randy Kidder at [email protected] or by calling (816) 569-4954. No shakedown treks required!

A new and exciting international opportunity we are considering for 2012 is the formation of a group of Scouts to travel to Kanderstag, the Inter-national High Adventure Base in Switzerland in the summer of 2012.

For the latest developments on the trip to Kanderstag or anything else Scouting in other nations, visit us at http://www.hoac-bsa.org/Programs/InternationalScout-ing.aspx.

54th Jamboree-on-the-Air and the Jamboree-on-the-internetThe Jamboree-on-the-Air, JOTA and the Jamboree-on-the-Internet, JOTI, are annual Scouting events sponsored by the World Scout Bureau of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. On the weekend of October 15 and 16, 2011, Scouts from all over the world will have an educational opportunity learn about other cultures and develop friendships that span the globe.

The JOTA has been an ongoing event for more than 50 years. Often Cub Scout dens and Boy Scout patrols will visit an amateur ham radio operator’s

“shack” for a chance to learn about this tremendous hobby and to contact Scouts from other nations.

JOTI is a natural extension of the JOTA. With world-wide access and a wide variety of ways to communicate, Scouts can easily participate from the comfort of their own home.

shooting sports training

The Shooting Sports Committee is offering training to unit leaders throughout the year to make sure that we are meeting BSA requirements for shooting safety. You’ll see that they are labeled as NRA trainings; the BSA and the NRA have partnered to ensure these trainings and BSA requirements are similar so that an individual is fully trained within either organization. Below is a list of upcoming trainings that we are offering to any all leaders who have not yet been trained in these skills.

Investment in CharacterThanks to everyone who have made a generous financial contribution to Scouting. The Big Muddy District was successful in raising its Family and Community Friends of Scouting goals. Friends of Scouting is an essential part of funding the operations of the district and council and as beneficiaries of service FOS provides, your support is imperative to the continuation of the Scouting movement.

Day CampThis year’s Day Camp was great fun and the Cubs involved had a great time. For input, ideas, and volunteer opportuni-ties for the 2012 Day Camp see Michelle or Aaron at the August roundtable.

Fishing Tournament The Bass Tournament was a success!!! We promoted Scout-ing, raised a little money, and those who participated had

fun. Brock Beissenherz of Wellington, MO pulled in a whopping 8lb 14oz bass to take home the prize of

the biggest bass. Amos Todd pulled in 5 fish weighing 16 lbs and 10 oz taking home the

third place trophy, Brian Beissenherz and his partner Jack Thompson for the second year in a row took home sec-

ond place with a competitive weight of 20 lbs 8 oz. Taking home first place

was Brock and Bruce Beissenherz father and son team out of Wellington, MO brought

in a whopping 28lbs 11oz entry. Congratula-tions to the winners and look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Situations included, traffic accidents, stolen car, building search for reported squatters, domestic situation, and so much more. The Explorers handled the situations and were critiqued by Explorer Adult Leaders and then at the end of the day recognized with awards for their performance. Thank you to the Overland Park Police Department for hosting and amazing event with fun, food, fellowship, and an amazing event. Thank you to all the Law Enforcement Agencies who not only participated, but helped in the planning stages. Thank you to the Bishop Miege High School Students who bravely volunteered their day to be the actors for each law enforcement situation. Pack leaders are to make sure that newly recruited Cubs attend this campout on Friday and Saturday, September 30 and October 1, at Camp Branch — Loop B, at Smithville Lake. The event starts at 5:00 pm on Friday evening, and will be done by noon on Saturday.

To get us ready for School Night, each pack should have a representative present at the North Star District School Night for Scouting Kickoff & Orientation at Barry Christian Church 1500 NW Barry Rd at 7:30 pm. There we will discuss the School Night plan and go over the details of our School Night.

Day Camp Day Camp was a great success this year! More than 700 Cub Scouts came out for a week of Cub Questing with fun activities and games at the Platte County Fair Grounds in Tracy Mo. The Cub Scouts enjoyed shooting BB guns, bows and arrows, sling shots and participating in many other various crafts and of course the fire truck! Thank you to all of the packs in attendance and all of the adult volunteers who helped make this camp possible.

A big Thank You to Melinda McCombs, Charlotte Sims and all the supporting staff for your months of preparation and for putting on such a great day camp.

Investment in Character Campaign Congratulations Pelathe District!! We reached our overall goal for the Investment in Character campaign this year. This is due to all the hard work from the Community Cam-paign Chair — Dr. Dale Denning and our Family Chair-man — Scott Gates. Their help and dedication to support-ing Scouting, allowed this year’s campaign to be a success.

Day CampDay Camp was a huge success!!!! We had 175 youth attend this year’s camp. They participated in great activities such as: Archery, BB Guns, Rocket Shooting, Soccer, Cooking, Arts and Crafts etc… Camp wrapped up with the Fire De-partment showing up and hosing the kids down on a warm day!!! Alfred Cramer and Karen Lewis did an amazing job putting this camp together! Next time you see them, please give them a HUGE thank you for all their time and efforts they put into such a great day camp!!!!!

Johnny Rowlands Visits Cub Scout Day CampJohnny Rowlands and News Chopper 9 descended upon Red-Tailed Hawk Cub Scout Day Camp this summer. Campers and adults watched as his helicopter circled the camp and finally landed on the south hill. Johnny briefly spoke to the group about severe weather safety and the steps to take in the event of a tornado. Scouters were then given the opportunity to take a closer look at News Chop-per 9 on the ground and even get their pictures taken with Johnny. Johnny’s landing marked the pinnacle of the noon time surprises at day camp this year. Mild weather and exciting activities made for a memorable camp for every-one involved.

School Night for ScoutingIt is more important than ever to maximize your unit’s vis-ibility at your school or church. At the June Cub round-table, leaders helped brainstorm some additional recruiting techniques that might be beneficial to your unit. Some of the highlights include better utilizing your school’s PTA/PTO to promote Scouting, setting up a booth at your school’s enrollment day, Back to School Night, or meet the teacher event, and posting fliers and yard signs where permitted. The council is happy to print and supply promo-tional materials for you to hand out to potential Scouts.

School Night for Scouting Kick-OffSchool Night for Scouting is quickly approaching. This is our fall recruitment event which introduces hundreds of boys into the Cub Scout program. Each pack should have your pack’s school night chairman in attendance on Tuesday, August 9, at 7:30 pm at Atonement Lutheran Church, 9948 Metcalf. At this very important meeting we will review the School Night program, distribute all of the School Night materials, provide details on organizing new dens, and discuss leadership needs.

Day Camp Re-CapThank you to everyone who made the 2011 Trailhead Day Camp one to remember.

From June 6-10, Shawnee Riverfront Park was the site of “Cub Quest 2011.” More than 370 Cub scouts enjoyed ac-tivities like BB Guns, Archery, Zip-line Chair ride, Crafts, Human Foosball, and even Science. It takes a countless number of leaders and staff to make camp happen and it would not be a success without you.

Plans are already underway to make next year even better. If you would to help plan or serve on staff for Day Camp 2012 contact our Camp Director, Bill O’Connor, at [email protected]

• When and where your unit meets

• Pack and den leader’s names and contact information

• A calendar of your unit’s activities for the rest of the year

• An explanation of any dues or fees that your unit charges

We also strongly encourage all packs to develop a table-top display of your unit to build excitement for your unit.

Please make certain that someone from your unit is in at-tendance to assist with the process, sign new applications, and welcome the new Cubs into your pack.

Troop leaders we will be asking you to attend to assist, as well. Every School Night should have Boy Scout represen-tation at them.
