Great Southern Treasures Trail Loop
An easy three-hour drive south-east of Perth, Katanning is the perfect base to explore Western Australia’s Great Southern. This large and diverse region is a top tourist destination, featuring many natural scenic attractions, wildlife, heritage, wildflowers and genuine country hospitality.
KAAT-NYINY is a local Noongar word meaning the head sits here. It comes from the Dreamtime story of Mulka, a giant man whose body parts are embedded in country throughout the Great Southern Region.
Katanning is a scenic rural town with many stories to tell; stories of an ancient and modern history, strong ties to agriculture and the beauty of our landscape, the positive
influence of migration and the festivals and events that celebrate this unique place we call home.
The most popular time to visit Katanning and its surrounding region is during the wildflower season from late winter through to spring when the landscape is at its most spectacular.
Harmony FestivalKatanning proudly is the most multicultural community in Western Australia, with over 40 nationalities. The community harmoniously embraces a variety of different cultural and religious backgrounds and are proud to showcase this to visitors. It is truly the multicultural gem of the Great Southern.
Community events form the backbone of Katanning’s social calendar. One of the most important community events on the social calendar is the Katanning Harmony Festival, held every March, where everyone comes together to learn more about the various cultures in town – the food, entertainment, historical stories, and shared experiences.
Great Southern TreasuresKatanning is the perfect base for exploring the Great Southern region with an array of easy daytrips. Our full drive trail is over 800kms in length and crosses eight Shire boundaries. For suggested itineraries visit the Great Southern Treasures website.

Fly Your Flag 2
After almost two years of planning and preparation 20 flag poles and flags were unfurled at the Katanning Lions Park on 18 March 2016. The poles proudly display some of the diverse nationalities living in town.
More than 20 flags were donated so the flags will be rotated every March and September. The Australian and Aboriginal flag will remain permanently.

FORM & Local Art MuralsIn 2017 the PUBLIC Silo Trail stopped off in Katanning. Without a grain silo in town a series of Western Power electrical transformer boxes and walls in the town centre were transformed with murals by prominent Western Australian artists Brenton See, Chris Nixon, Darren Hutchens and Mel McVee. The artists were joined by visiting international light calligrapher Karim Jabbari, connecting youth with creativity for social good.
