THE HUMAN HEART • Apart of the

cardiovascular system• Allows for the delivery

of needed substances to body cells.

• Conducts waste removal

• Consist of the human heart & blood vessels: – Arteries– Capillaries– Veins

IT’S A TWO PART SYSTEM• Pulmonary

Circulation – Between the

heart & the lungs

– Transports deoxygenated blood to the lungs to get oxygen

– Carries this blood back to the heart

• Systemic Circulation – Between the

heart and tissues and cells

– Transports oxygenated blood away from the heart to tissues and cells

– Carries this blood back to the heart

ITS NOT ALWAYS PERFECT- HEART PATHOLOGY• There are many

different types of heart disease.

• Many are genetic and some are developed during life.

• Some are fatal, and many can also be treated.

• Bundle Branch Block• Cardiac Arrest • Cardiomyopathy

THE DOPPLER ULTRASOUND

• Measurements of sound waves bounce off internal organs to produce an image.

• Measures velocity of blood moving through vessels.

• Identifies blood clots and thromboses for preventative action.

STRESS TESTING

• Evaluates cardiovascular fitness

• Patient placed on treadmill, with increased levels of work

• EKG & oxygen levels are tested for abnormalities.

• If found the patient will be stopped.

ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY• Diagnostic ultrasound

procedure• Used to visualize internal

cardiac structures & cardiac valve activity.

• Picture to the upper left shows a pediatric echocardiography being done.

• Cardiologist often refer to this procedure as cardiac ECHO.

Eating healthy, exercise, and regular testing can prevent heart disease and invasive treatments.
