If You are Over Age 70 ½, Here’s Why You Should Donate Directly from Your IRA

Are you turning 70 ½ this year? Has your financial institution told you that you have to take a required minimum distribution from your IRA? Are you thinking to yourself, “I don’t really need that money”? If so, it may make sense to call your financial advisor and ask her to set up a charitable distribution directly from your IRA.

Individuals over age 70 ½ can donate up to $100,000 from an IRA directly to a qualified charity without triggering any federal income taxes. Under the qualified charitable distributions provision, you request a distribution from your IRA and provide your financial advisor with the name and address of the qualifying charity. The distribution can be sent directly to the charity of your choice…like the Sacred Heart Foundation!

There are a number of potential tax benefits to you for making a charitable contribution directly from your IRA.

Income tax on the distribution is avoided, even if you do not itemize deductions and even if your gifts exceed the percentage of income limits for charitable deductions.

The distribution does not increase your adjusted gross income for purposes of reducing itemized deductions, nor does it limit the amount of deductible medical expenses or miscellaneous itemized deductions or increase the taxation of your Social Security benefits

If the state you live in determines taxable income based on federal adjusted gross income, there is no state income tax on the distribution, even if the state does not allow the charitable deduction

Maybe now is the time to speak to your financial advisor or tax professional to see if a gift to the Sacred Heart Foundation directly from your IRA makes sense for you.

Oh, no! That was our last Foundation Card! Don’t worry! You can order cards online 24/7 at the Foundation website.

Online orders are mailed the next business day to the recipient for your convenience.

Each time you use a Sacred Heart Foundation card you support our mission.

If you are considering a charitable contribution this year, it is in your best interest to seek out the most effective manner in which your money can work for you. Gifting appreciated stock is one of the most effective means of tax savings available. There are three benefits for you to consider: 1) The satisfaction of knowing your money is invested in a cause important to you. 2) Capital gains taxes on the stock are avoided. 3) You will be eligible to receive an income tax charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the stock at the time of the gift.

To qualify for those special tax advantages, the security must have been held for at least one year. Your gift of appreciated stock is fully deductible up to 30% of your adjusted gross income. For example, if your adjusted gross income is $100,000, up to $30,000 of long term appreciated stock and other capital gain property may generally be deducted, although high income donors may be subject to a partial phase out of itemized deductions.

Mission Statement The Sacred Heart Foundation spreads the word of God by raising funds which provide financial assistance for the

education of those studying to be priests and brothers of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart anywhere in the world.

Getting to know those YOU support Xavier Tiabondou is from Yaounde, Cameroon. Xavier tells us that what attracted him to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart is their mission and spirituality. He goes on to explain “But most of all, it was their spirituality of the sacred heart that caught my attention. Similarly. I want to make [the] love [of the] Heart of Jesus known everywhere in the world especially in environments where poverty and misery reign.” During his free time, Xavier enjoys participating in sports and reading. Other hobbies of his include traveling and swimming. He is currently in his first year of Theology.

Jin Ho Pius Kim is from Incheon, South Korea. Jin Ho tells us “From early on, I have been interested in Sacred Heart. So I wanted to love like Sacred Heart. Especially, I see the Good Shepard who goes in search of those who are lost, who knows his own and gives his life to save them in Jesus. So, I want to love as a Missionary of the Sacred Heart.” During his free time, Jin Ho enjoys volunteering in hospice care. He is interest in hospice because his passion is to live a life dedicated to those who are dying; death reminds him of the ultimate Sacrifice Jesus made “...Because death means a lot to me. The meaning of the death reminds me of Jesus on the cross.” He is currently in his sixth year of Theology.

Please keep Xavier and Jin Ho as well as all our scholarship recipients in your prayers as they continue their studies. Thank you for all your support. It is through your donations that we are able to provide the financial support they need.
