“No Refunds”
Wow! Can you believe it?The summer is almost over.I don’t know about you, but mysummer has been a very busy one.From conferences to missiontrips to vacation, I have been on
the go since the summer began. I can remember, asa little boy growing up in Florida, summer breaksseemed to take forever…from swimming lessons torecreational sports to church picnics to familyreunions. Boy, how times have changed over theyears. Isn’t it amazing, as we grow older, how timeseems to pass much quicker? Even when weintentionally attempt to slow time down, it seems toalways get away from us.
So, as we move into the fall season, I would like touse this opportunity to spend some time talkingabout time and how we spend it. I know that mostof us have heard the old saying, “Be careful how youspend your time because you can never get it back.”As it relates to our current retail-minded society, Iwould like to contemporize this old saying byrephrasing it to say, “Be careful how you spend yourtime because there is no such thing as a refund.”
Since January 2016, our church has spent anenormous amount of time actively engaged in this“Year of Cultivation & Transformation.” I don’tknow about you, but I have seen tremendousprogress being made in the ministries, the physicalfacilities, as well as the operations of our church.Many of our church leaders have demonstrated theirstrength and courage as they cultivated andtransformed many of our church ministries, severalareas within our church buildings and variousantiquated church procedures and protocols. I lovethe direction our church is heading, because as timecontinues to change, we must be willing to changewith the times. Another old saying, which I believe
is appropriate for this particular moment says, “Time
waits for no one.”
With that in mind, it is now time for the East EndBaptist Church to begin thinking about 2017. Withonly three more months remaining in this year,January 2017 is right around the corner. As youknow, each year we try to encapsulate the year withan Annual Church Theme. 2017 will not be anydifferent. The Lord has led us to rally around the
annual theme, “Be a Part of SomethingGreater.” There are five things I believe the Lordwants our church to become great at in theupcoming year and years: (1) worship, (2)discipleship, (3) robust care, (4)evangelism, and (5) community impact. Inother words, I believe that God wants us to spend ourtime, collectively as a church next year, focused onthese five areas of ministry.
To put it yet another way, I’m extremely excited andlooking forward to 2017 because I am going to getthe opportunity to spend 365 days with each andevery one of you – having a Great Time inworship; having a Great Time beingdiscipled; having a Great Time caringrobustly for one another; having a GreatTime evangelizing the world; and having aGreat Time impacting our community. And,because God is blessing me to spend this time withyou, I’m certainly not expecting any refunds in 2017.

I am happy to say that myhusband is such a greatspiritual leader for ourfamily! This entire year he
has been involved in a leadership program that hashim attending several conferences during the year.Most recently he attended a weekend conference andcame back with a new family Bible study model. Sofar it has been great! With this new model we choseto study the book of Exodus. Although this is afamiliar passage to us, we have been able to find newthings in the words and get a refreshing glimpse ofGod and His power.
Another thing that I got from the beginningchapters of the book was about obedience...ourobedience. When we hear the voice of The Lordtelling us what to do, like Moses, many of us makeexcuses as to why we are not the best person for thejob. Once we get past that and realize that Godknows the inner workings of every person and knowsthe talents and gifts that we possess, even when wehave no idea, the work begins. Bottom line - trustthat God has chosen the right person.
So after Moses received the help of his brother, hesubmitted to the voice of God and was on mission tofree the Israelites from the Egyptians. Since he knewwhat the outcome was supposed to be, whilestudying we were able to see where Moses decided toput his own spin on a few things. God told him to tellPharaoh to release His people. However, whenMoses went to Pharaoh, he came up with an idea tohave them go and offer sacrifices in the wilderness.Nowhere in the Word could we find where God toldMoses this plan. My husband and I came to theconclusion that Moses came up with this one on hisown.
Isn't that just like us? Instead of doing exactly whatwe are told to do, we feel that we can come up with aplan that makes sense in our heads. Since we are notable to see the middle, we want to make up our own.God asks us to be obedient to what He says,no matter what. This means no matter what wecan see or cannot see, do! No more. No less. I am soexcited to be diving into the Word in a new way andanticipate other new concepts I will grasp fromfamiliar passages. And of course I will share! So staytuned....

People of all ages crave heroes, but it’s rare to find
someone – especially someone in the media
spotlight like Tony Dungy – whose life and work
reflect positive, values-driven precepts. In Dungy
many have found a role model. Sports fans admire
the way he intensely pursues success without
sacrificing the well-being of his team members.
Parents point to his examples when teaching their
children about the importance of hard work,
persistence and graciousness, whether they win or
lose. Even his fiercest competition acknowledges
that Coach Dungy is a class act who knows how to
get the job done and who keeps his priorities intact
while he’s doing it. To all those people and more,
Tony Dungy is a real life hero – one who teaches us
about the importance of quiet strength, fierce
determination and a humble heart.
Tony Dungy led the Indianapolis Colts to Super Bowl
victory on February 4, 2007, the first such win for an
African American coach. Dungy had taken eight of
his previous ten teams to the playoffs. With this
victory, he joined Mike Ditka and Tom Flores as the
only individuals to win the super Bowl as a player
and head coach.
Dungy joined the Colts in 2002 after serving as the
most successful head coach in Tampa Bay
Buccaneers history. He has also held assistant
coaching positions with the University of Minnesota,
Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs and the
Minnesota Vikings. Before becoming a coach,
Dungy played three seasons in the NFL. Since
stepping down as head coach of the Colts, Dungy has
worked as an analyst for NBC's "Football Night in
America." He was elected to the National Football
League Hall of Fame in February of 2016.
Dungy has been involved in a wide variety of
charitable organizations including the Fellowship of
Christian Athletes in Action, Mentors for Life, Big
Brothers, Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Clubs, The Prison
Crusade Ministry and All Pro Dad. He also works
with Basket of Hope, The Black Coaches Association
National Convention, Indiana Black Expo, The
United Way of Central Indiana and the American
Diabetes Association. He and his wife, Lauren, are
the parents of six children.
In the pages of this fascinating memoir, Dungy
reveals the secrets to his success – principles,
practices and priorities that have kept him on track
despite overwhelming personal and professional
obstacles including firings, stereotyping and the
tragic loss of a child. In the face of much adversity,
he has not only survived but risen to the very top of
his profession in a way that’s won the respect of fans,
players and even his competition. His thoughts on
leading, succeeding and attaining true significance
will inspire you to take a long, hard look at the things
that really matter in your own life.
I highly recommend this book for all adults,
especially parents, role models and leaders in all
walks of life who want to put God first in their hearts
and lives!
