Why HeartCode…..

The performance and quality of CPR is critical and the

quality performed by health care professionals suffers greatly.

“A way to improve the quality of CPR should be seen as a

vital area of attention to help improve survival rates from

sudden cardiac arrest.” By using Voice Assisted Manikins

correct inflations increased from 2%-64% and correct depth

and performance of compressions increased from 32%-92%.

Consistency with skill performance is imperative to skill

retention, and this is achieved through the use of the Voice

Assisted Manikin. Wik.L: Thowsen.J; Steen.PA: Resuscitation, 2001, 50, pp.167-172

Getting Started…..

Obtain a license by calling the Education Department

The lesson will be placed in your Advanced Learning Center

queue for completion.

You may enter this lesson as many times as you wish without

problems until it is completed.

Getting paid for BLS is according to your unit policy.

This HeartCode method is being used for initial

certifications, as well as, renewal processes.

Practice sites… There is the ability to practice Part 1 (Cognitive portion) BLS,

ACLS and PALS prior to getting into the actual lesson on the Advanced Learning Center.

The practice sites will allow you to navigate through the scenarios so you can see how those work prior to getting into the actual lesson.

The practice site is also available for use with the Voice Assisted Manikin (for BLS and ACLS Parts 2 and 3), just schedule a practice time. Each LHN location has a registration process, check with your educator or call 435-7453

Once logged in you will pick BLS Part 1

Your computer must have the required system requirements in order to run the program, one of

the biggest requirements is speakers- you must be able to hear the entire program.

Page 8: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

In the Practice site you may go directly to the

“HeartCode BLS Part 1”

Page 9: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

You have access to the American Heart BLS

textbook throughout the course (both in the

practice site and live version)….however, this

text is not able to be printed off from this site.

Practice Site….

You may practice as much as you would like on the practice

site.

If you attempt to get into a session and it will not allow you

to enter it, try another code.

The practice site is a nice way to see what you will be

encountering on the Advanced Learning Center program

without being in the live program and using a license.

On to the “Real” thing…. Once you have obtained your access to your lesson through the

Advanced Learning Center you may take as long as necessary to

complete the lesson(within reason)- this may include logging on

and off of the lesson multiple times. The lesson will keep track of

what aspects you have already completed.

Once you have taken the test component you have 30 days, from

that date, to complete the Part 2 and 3 check off. Please schedule

your check off as soon as you complete the lesson (currently the

check off sessions are being monitored by trained CPR instructors

to facilitate the use of the equipment). Each facility has a process

in place and schedule for the HeartCode Check off Room. Check

with your Educator.

Page 12: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

The lesson will show up in the Advanced

Learning Center “My Courses” page.

There are 3 components to completing the Part

1 for BLS….complete each component.

Page 16: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

The online component resembles the previous

online lesson with the exception that there are

patient simulations that need to be completed.

The information box highlights key points to the

scenario.

Page 17: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

In the scenario click on the tabs in the order in

which you would complete them, but be

mindful of your time, it starts the clock the

second you click on the scenario.

Page 18: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

Each component to the course must have a

GREEN check mark in order for the test to open

at the end of the program.

Page 19: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

Once you have passed the exam, you will move

on to the evaluation

Page 20: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

Though this says you have 60 days to complete

parts 2 and 3, CHS/LHN policy is that it needs

to be completed in 30 days from the day you

complete the test.

Page 21: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

Once all 3 components are complete you may

then get access to your certificate. You may

need to scroll down to find this information.

Page 22: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

Print your certificate. This is what you will need

to complete parts 2 and 3 in the CPR lab. The

individualized 8 character code is your access

number for parts 2 and 3 and is not a general

access number.

Page 23: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

Once everything in Part 1 is complete, Parts 2

and 3 should appear in your queue.

Page 24: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

What do I do once Part 1 is done?

Schedule a CPR check off by scheduling with your education

team.

When you come in for your check off, we will have you log

into the Advanced Learning Center to access the Parts 2 and

3 that are available on your ALC “My Courses” page.

Page 25: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

Entering Parts 2 and 3 look very much like

entering Part 1.

Page 26: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

This is where the code from your Part 1

certificate will get entered. It will then direct

you to the “Disclaimer” screen, complete that

and then you will have access to the skills test.

Page 27: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

Upon entering Part 2 and 3

Once you have placed your 8 digit code and clicked submit, the next screen will ask if you will be checking off with the “manikin” or “instructor,” you will choose “manikin” unless you meet the criteria for checking off with an instructor.

You will check off with the Voice Assisted Manikin using the “Pocket Mask” barrier device.

You will go through the disclaimer and then enter the skills test portion of your check off.

Skills Check off…. For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest

compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

compressions and ventilations for an adult and infant.

Ventilations will consist of giving 12 ventilations with a mouth to

mask apparatus. You must pass with 55% proficiency to pass this

portion for both the adult and infant.

Compressions will consist of administering 60 consecutive chest

compressions. Again you need to pass with 55% proficiency for

both the adult and infant.

You will complete 3 rounds of 30chest compressions and 2

ventilations at 55% proficiency to pass both the adult and infant.

The V.A.M.

VAM= Voice Assisted Manikin

The VAM will let you know how you are doing during your

practice or check off. Sometimes that may be distracting.

The VAM gives both positive reinforcement and constructive

criticism of your progress through the program.

This system CAN be mastered, especially with a POSITIVE

attitude.

Page 30: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

Check off completed (and I survived)

Once you completed the check off of both the adult and

infant you will need to complete the evaluation.

You will then be able to print your completion certificate.

Once you complete the evaluation, there should be a

secondary evaluation that will pop up in your queue. The

completion of the secondary evaluation is what will send

notification to American Heart that you have completed your

BLS.

Page 31: HeartCode Help Manual - Lutheran Health Network · For BLS the skills check off will consist of ventilations, chest compressions and then putting it all together by doing both chest

Complete the Post Course Survey…by

completing this, THIS is what will generate your

CPR card…..so you must complete it.
