From the Executive Director

“It makes a difference for that one.”

As I look back on 2012 and reflect how far HETRA has come as an organization, from the number of lives we have touched to HETRA’s future, I am reminded of the “Starfish Story”:

“A vacationing businessman was walking along a beach when he saw a young boy. Along the shore were many starfish that had been washed up by the tide and were sure to die before the tide returned. The boy walked slowly along the

shore and occasionally reached down and tossed the beached starfish back into the ocean.

The businessman, hoping to teach the boy a little lesson in common sense, walked up to the boy and said, “I have been watching what you are doing, son. You have a good heart, and I know you mean well, but do you realize how many beaches there are around here and how many starfish are dying on every beach every day. Surely such an

industrious and kind hearted boy such as yourself could find something better to do with your time. Do you really think that what you are doing is going to make a difference?”

The boy looked up at the man, and then he looked down at a starfish by his feet. He picked up the starfish, and as he gently tossed it back into the ocean, he said, “It makes a difference to that one.” Loren Eisley

Since 1989 HETRA has been serving the greater Omaha Metro area. Over the years, the program has grown, in all respects. The program has seen growth in the number students served, student sessions completed, horses working in the program, as well as the number of volunteers. The number and experience of the HETRA staff has also grown.

Even with this amazing growth, the over 23 year history of the organization, and over 3,500 sessions completed in 2012, there are still many in our community who have not heard of HETRA. I know the staff, volunteers and of course

the families we serve share the story of HETRA, sometimes on a daily basis. I feel that HETRA is one of Omaha’s best

kept secrets. I know that HETRA may never have the name recognition of the American Red Cross or American Cancer Society but that does not diminish the impact this program has on the individuals we serve every day.

One example of HETRA’s impact is demonstrated by Rachel’s story. After Rachel’s nineteenth Hippotherapy session at HETRA, we received the most amazing news. Rachel had taken the first 4 independent steps of her life. She had

walked from her wheelchair to her couch and her Mom reported that she kept doing it. They were elated as they were

unsure she would ever take those first independent steps. Rachel was 14 years old at the time.

As I look back over 2012 and the past 23 years of the organization I remember the “Starfish Story” and I know that HETRA does “make a difference to that one.” I am grateful to the wonderful support of our community, Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and the families we serve. I look forward to continuing to grow and expand programming,

to serve more students ,and to complete more sessions. But most importantly I look forward to continuing to “make a difference to that one”.
