ART TRIP

The GCSE Year 10 andYear 12 AS level Art &Design students spent an

interesting day at the Tate Modern Gallery, on Tuesday4th December 2012, undertaking art history research tosupport their current projects on Expressionism andNatural Forms.

Tate Modern offers a vast collection of fine art paintings, sculptures and installations that our students were able to use toinspire them in their own artwork and creations. Students madedrawings of the exhibits in the galleries that related to theirindividual projects.

It was a very valuable experience to see the artwork within agallery setting as the scale, colour and environment have muchmore impressive impact than when seeing it on flat twodimensional pages or a computer screen.

Geography FieldworkOn a cold February morning, the Year 12Geography students set off for a week’sresidential fieldtrip to the North Norfolk Coast.

Fieldwork is an important part in the AS LevelGeography course and students were required toinvestigate the topics of ‘Crowded Coasts’ and‘Rebranding’.

The week’s activities encouraged students to develop their investigative thinkingand developed the skills of data collection and interpretation while using the latestgeographical information systems technology. Students showed their depth ofunderstanding, willingness to learn and great character in all activities, whichincluded measuring erosion and the success of coastal sea defences on a verywindy beach, asking questionnaires whilst land- use mapping in Norwich, andcompleting team building activities in the snow back at the accommodation.

All students worked extremely hard and were great ambassadors for Heathcote School.

On Thursday 24thJanuary the HolocaustEducation Trust in

conjunction with Film Education put on ascreening of the film ‘Good’ at the Odeoncinema Covent Garden.

The screening was accompanied by anintroductory talk before the showing and adiscussion forum following the film so thatstudents could discuss issues that arose fromthe themes in the film and any other Holocaustrelated issues.

Twenty two of our Year 10 History studentswere fortunate enough to attend and take part inthe event. They were moved by the film andtook part in the discussion following it.

One of the students, Anelka Campbell, was interviewed by the organizers andwas able to give some thoughtful feedback. Mrs. Vinning and Mrs. Beattiewould like to commend the students for their excellent behaviour and maturecontributions to the event.
