Background• Founded in 1975 as the Alliance for Continuing

Medical Educaton• In 2011, the Alliance for Continuing Medical

Education became the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions

• The change was made to “more closely align the Alliance with the medical profession’s shift toward a more collaborative and team-based system of care.” (Pelletier, S. (December 1, 2011). It’s Official: Alliance for CME Has New Name. Retrieved from http://meetingsnet.com)

Current Topics• Recently expanded their advocacy efforts on behalf of

their membership o One of the biggest issues facing in CME is the Sunshine Act. While CME is

mostly exempt from the requirements, there are a few areas of concern for providers. The ACEHP is working to help members understand the implications to the field.

• Working to inform the public and patients of the benefits and value of continuing professional education

• Helping members understand Maintenance of Certification, Maintenance of Licensure and Osteopathic Continuous Certification Advance so they can better serve their constituents

• Helping members better understand healthcare reform• Helping members understand the concept of

interprofessional education

Although not affiliated with ACEHP, I felt it is important to point out that there is a certification for individuals involved in planning continuing medical education. The designation is called CCMEP (certified continuing medical education professional) and it is administered through the National Commission for Certification of CME Professionals.

Interest• I am currently a member of ACEHP because it is

common for individuals in my field to be members• Enjoy access to their journal and other publications• I think there is a lot of room for improvement within

the organization especially the annual meeting• I facilitated several sessions at the summer medical

specialty societies meeting which was very poorly run and the evaluation that was sent out afterward was completely embarrassing – has prompted me to want to get more involved to try to improve education

• The summer basics institute is their best educational activity
