CITY HARVEST HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE - UNTIL
OCTOBER 11TH
More than 500,000 Jewish New Yorkers live below or only slightly
above the poverty line. The Bayit is teaming up with City Harvest to
feed our neighbors in need during the High Holidays. Visit
www.thebayit.org/cityharvest for a list of needed items.
AMAZON SMILE PROGRAM
Go to smile.amazon.com, pick your own charitable organization
and put in “Hebrew Institute of Riverdale.”
The Bayit has already earned almost $1,250 in donations through
the Amazon Smile program!
HIGH HOLIDAY CHILDCARE
In order to ensure that our children are well cared for during High
Holiday tefillot, we need your help. Overstaffing based on a “best
guess” could leave us with extra staff and a bill that is $2,000 -
$3,000 higher than necessary. Understaffing, due to high late
registration leads to a chaotic situation that creates an unbearable
working environment for staff and an unsafe condition for our
children. If your children will be in shul on Rosh Hashana or Yom
Kippur register today at www.thebayit.org/childcare
Tween Tefillah/Discussion on the High Holidays Building on the success of the past two years, we will once again have a one hour explanatory service for the “in between” age group to
build their understanding of and appreciation for the High Holiday liturgy. While the program is geared towards pre-Bar/Bat mitzvah age
children, anyone in grades 4 and up who wishes to participate is welcome. We would also love to hear your suggestions for additional
ways to engage this age cohort.
We kindly request that all parents take a few minutes to make a High Holiday plan with their children. The plan can incorporate some or
all of these elements: spending time in services, taking a break and reading a book, coming to the Bayit a little later in the
morning or heading home early and participating in the explanatory service. Whatever makes sense for your child.
Thank you for your help in ensuring that children are meaningfully engaged and not running unsupervised in the building or
congregating in stairways, lobbies and hallways.
HIR KNITTING CLUB
The Knitting Club will be taking a break for the
fall holidays.
Next meeting: Monday, October 28th at 7:00pm
Questions? Please call Joan Salomon at 845-653-
1290.
THE BAYIT The Hebrew Institute of Riverdale – The Bayit – is an open Orthodox synagogue serving the entire Jewish community by warmly embracing all
Jews, regardless of affiliation, commitment, orientation or background. It is affectionately known as the "Bayit," which is a home – a place of love
and welcome. We are known nationally for bringing spirituality into the synagogue; activism on behalf of the oppressed; youth and teen
engagement; learning programs; and work on behalf of the elderly, the homebound, and those with developmental and physical challenges.
If these words resonate with you, if our Bayit has touched your life, then please join our growing membership.
BAYIT SEFARIM FUND
Donations to the Sefarim fund will be used to
purchase the books we need as determined by
the Rabbinic team and Gabbaim. Donors will be
recognized with a thank you in the 2nd bulletin of
every month and a dedication label in the book when it is
purchased. www.thebayit.org/sefarim.
CLIMATE CORNER
What would happen if everybody in the United States cut
back on driving?
According to a NYT Climate Forward newsletter, even using
your car a little bit less- just 10 percent less — would have a
big impact on greenhouse gas emissions.
Transportation is the biggest contributor to United States
greenhouse gas emissions.
A 10 percent cut, therefore, would be roughly 110 million
metric tons of carbon dioxide, or the same as taking about 28
coal-fired power plants offline for a year. How can we cut
back:
Replace some shorter car trips with walking, biking or
taking public transportation
Car pool
Occasionally work from home, if possible.
Make your next car an electric one - 1 of our Green
Team members did & couldn’t be happier For more information contact [email protected].
COMMUNITY SECURITY SERVICE (CSS)
Thank you to all our CSS volunteers.
The best thank you to give is to become part of the
team. The more volunteers we have, the fewer
times each year any one person has to serve.
Ready to sign up for the next training course? Questions?
Please contact Tzvi Bar-Shai at [email protected].
BREATH, BODY, MIND WORKSHOP: Mondays

OCTOBER 12TH - SHABBAT MORNING
EVACUATION DRILL We will be holding a shul-wide drill in order to prepare for
the unlikely event that we need to evacuate the building. The
drill will be led by our Community Security Service (CSS)
team. A few important points to keep in mind:
When we evacuate, we walk to the corner of Johnson
Ave. and Henry Hudson Parkway and gather there. In a
live emergency we will want to clear the area around the
building for first responders.
There are 2 gates from the playground to the Mikvah
driveway. If you are exiting down the stairs from the
terrace and Main Sanctuary, that is now your fastest
route to safety.
CSS is working with the Youth Leaders and children in
groups to prepare. During a drill or any emergency
situation please do not attempt to go up to the third
floor to get your children. They will be brought to you at
our rally point.
Please make sure that your children and/or Shabbat
guests are aware that we are planning the drill. The goal
is to practice and learn - not to frighten or surprise
anyone.
