1 Dear Fellow Alumni: Homecoming 2012 saw approximately 390 people at the luncheon gathering and 179 in attendance at the dinner. Class reunions were held for the clas- ses of 1952, 1955, 1962, 1972, 1982, and 1987. There was good attendance from alumni from the 1940’s, 50’s, 60’s 70’s and 80’s. Members of the Class of 1948 return each year for Homecoming starting with a Friday night dinner hosted by Roy Wauford and his wife at their home. Homecoming for 2013 will be held on Saturday, October 12 coinciding with the annual Columbus Day weekend. The picnic luncheon will be held behind the Ingram Alumni House and our din- ner will be at the Castle Heights Chop House. Currently, in addition to the $200,000 in our CD our other accounts show $779.75 in regular checking, and in the Library Fund account the amount is $235,662, and in the LTA account the balance is $33,097.82. In July, we will be funding ten (10) $1,000 scholarships for a total of $10,000. This year we have had five (5) scholar- ships funded by individual donations. Needless to say, we are very apprecia- tive of the generosity of these contribu- tors. The interest on our CD is current- ly at .60% and it is highly unlikely that it will improve anytime soon. For any- one who is interested in funding a full scholarship in honor or memory of a classmate or anyone else, please con- tact me at 615/451-0468 or email me at [email protected]. The Scholarship Selection Committee, chaired by Allen Chamberlain ‘84, com- pleted the selection of this year’s 10 recip- ients for the $1,000 scholarships. We have now completed the 13th year of the Alumni scholarship program. This will be our 6th year to award ten scholarships. The list of this year’s recipients are on page 4. For the second year, the endowed J.B. mation you send us will be used in the August news-

letter in our “Alumni Update” section.

We have had a successful year with regard to dona-

tions by Alumni and others. As of May 4, 2013 we

have received donations from 460 contributors in the

amount of $31,385. These figures are from the begin-

ning of our June 2012 fundraiser through May 4 of

this year and include scholarship contributions.

For this year’s Homecoming, plans are being made for

reunions for the classes of 1948, 1953, 1958, l963,

1968, and 1973. We have not heard anything yet on

possible reunions for the classes of 1978, and 1983.

The 60th reunion for the class of 1953 is being

planned by Pat Buckles, Billy McCann, and Stan

Chauvin. Jim Spurlock is working on the 55th Reun-

ion for the Class of 1958. I am working on the 50th

Reunion for my Class of 1963. Sandy Harris is coordi-

nating his 45th Reunion for the Class of 1968. Fleet

Lester is planning a 40th Reunion for his Class of

1973. Roy Wauford and Fred Marsh are working on

their annual reunion for their Class of 1948.

If anyone would like to take on the task of the class

reunions for 1978 and 1983, please let us know. We

will provide names, mailing addresses, phone num-

bers and email addresses (for those who have email)

for your class. Please call us at 615/451-0468 or

email at [email protected].

Our next Board of Directors meeting will be on Satur-

day, July 13 at the Ingram Alumni House.

Please be sure to reserve the weekend of Satur-

day, October 12 for the 2013 Homecoming. We

are looking forward to another great turnout, so

please make plans to return to the campus for this

year’s reunion.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, my sincere

thanks to all who continue to support our efforts to

preserve the history of CHMA.

Sincerely,

UPDATE Purchase of Rutherford Parks Library

I am pleased to announce that we are closing on the pur-

chase of the Rutherford Parks Library on Monday, June 3,

2013, at 1:00 p.m. Currently, we have raised $235,662 in

cash from 229 donors. Outstanding pledges total $60,134.

On February 23, 2013, the Alumni Board of Directors met

and appointed an Executive Committee which later met by

conference call on April 1, 8, and 15 to determine the viabil-

ity of purchasing the Library. At the February meeting it

was decided to borrow $100,000 from our $200,000 CD to

add to the money already raised. The current owners of the

Library agreed on a lower purchase price of $330,000. We

plan on returning the CD to its previous level of $200,000

within 5 years or less.

This completes the first phase of our fundraising. We will

now work to raise the remainder of the monies needed to

meet our initial goal of $500,000. There is now an adjusted

balance of $250,000 which includes the payback of $100,000

to the CD and $150,000 that will go toward renovation and

maintenance of the Library.

The second phase of our fundraising will begin with a fund-

raising event scheduled for August 3, 2013 sponsored by

several alumni from the Class of 1975 and will be held in

Lebanon at The Mill (an insert in this Newsletter has the

information on this event).

We are still accepting contributions to the Library Fund for

our second phase of the purchase. If you would like to make

a contribution, please make your check payable to Heights

National Alumni Association and indicate on your check

that your contribution is for the “Library Fund” and mail it

to Heights National Alumni Association, % Rob Hosier, 1045

Woodmont Drive, Gallatin, TN 37066.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, my sincere thanks to all

who have contributed, made pledges, or will contribute in

the future to make the Rutherford Parks Library a perma-

nent repository on the Hilltop. Let me close by saying that

there are no plans at the present time to either close or sell

the Ingram Alumni House.
