KEEP CALM! SPRING IS COMING ...Hey, you!Have you ever wished that life could have a big red “pause” button? Not to stop the whole thing permanently; just so you could linger in an enjoyable moment. Or finish the homework you were assigned for tomorrow…

Sadly, time waits for no one, and this month is flying by. The fact that September is at our doorstep reminds us that spring is coming, and with it hopefully some warmer weather and longer days. Soon, it’ll be pool party time again. Until then, take a break – and read AWSUM.

For now, there are only 3 weeks remaining before the Rugby World Cup kicks off in England!!! Excitement is growing, even here at AWSUM HQ. Make sure that you enter the competition on Page 16 where you could stand a chance of winning a rugby jersey and ball signed by Jean de Villiers. To enter, simply like AWSUM on Facebook and post a comment on our wall: Rugby World Cup #MakeItAHomeGame.

THE SELFIE CULTURE: SHOULD WE BE WORRIED?You can hardly go onto Facebook, Instagram or any other social media site without being inundated with selfies. A recent study

found that a 91% of teens have reportedly posted a photo of themselves online. With this kind of statistic, odds are that your teen has already taken and posted at least one of these instant self-portraits.

By Steven Wodawww.uknowkids.com

For most teens, selfies are a harmless bit of adolescent fun, no more dangerous than other passing fads. Actual damage by selfie is rare, but it does happen. As a parent, you need to be aware of these risks and become equipped to discuss them with your teen.

SELFIES AND SELF-ESTEEMOne risk factor for selfies is that the act and obsession with taking them can lead teens to the development of poor self-esteem.

There has been some speculation about whether self-portraits help or hurt self-esteem. Out of the few studies that have been conducted on the matter, the verdict on the effects of selfies on teen

self-esteem is somewhat conflicting.A body image survey conducted by

the TODAY Show found that 65% of teen girls feel that selfies boost their self-confidence. 40% of them agreed that social media helps them put their best face forward. However, 53% of respondents alleged that photos of themselves that are posted by others can make them feel bad.

Earlier this year a teen from the UK became obsessed with taking the perfect

selfie. He dropped out of school, lost thirty pounds, and didn’t leave the house for six months because he was devoting ten or more hours a day to taking pictures.

The chances are pretty good that your teen is not as ill as this young man was, but, while rare, the case

demonstrates how poor self-esteem can be exacerbated by the selfie trend. The danger is very real and is something that should be on every parent’s radar.

SELFIES AND YOUR ONLINE REPUTATIONThe permanence of anything that is posted online, like selfies, can haunt a teen years after they’re taken. Although there are a few ways kids can make the social networks they use more protected, there is never a guarantee that something won’t go viral once it is posted or merely sent to one person.

College admissions officers and scholarship foundations now often include a search on social media for prospective students. Many employers have started looking up a job applicant’s online presence and factoring that information into their hiring decisions. That car-surfing stunt a teen photographed in his first year of college may be years in the past. But to an employer, what does that say about the job applicant’s judgment and self-control?

SELFIE SAFETY TIPS: 1. Teach teens early on that selfies, social media posts, and the feedback they receive on social media should not be tied to their self-worth.2. Ensure that your teens are using proper

privacy settings throughout their social media accounts.3. Instruct your kids to be careful about the personal settings and items that are featured in selfies.4. Only post selfies that you would be comfortable sharing with the world.

The Varsity Sports Netball tournament kicks off on 6-7 September and some of the country’s best netball players will be in action. Maties finished fourth last year and as co-captains Juline Rossouw and Suné Claassens will play a big role in their team’s efforts to do even better this year. Rossouw is a former Paarl Gymnasium learner who enrolled at Stellenbosch University (SU) in 2011. She is currently studying towards a degree in Education. Netball is her passion and she is not planning on quitting any time soon. “I don’t think there is anything else in this world that makes me as happy as being between those four lines on court.” This defender, who represented the Proteas in

the Fast Five World series in New Zealand in 2013, is currently playing for Maties, the Cape Winelands Senior A side and the Southern Stings (in the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup). Claassens, a former Augsburg High (Augsburg Landbougimnasium) learner, also enrolled at SU in 2011 and has already graduated with a B.Com degree as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). She is currently busy with a postgraduate diploma in development finance. As centre she is playing for Maties, the Cape Winelands Senior A side and the Southern Stings. “Netball isn’t just a sport for me, it’s a lifestyle,” she says. Both Rossouw and Claassens encourage new students to continue playing sport

A PLAYBALL SUCCESS STORY......Playball Helderberg FranchisePlayball Helderberg is owned and run by Toni Booyens and Careen du Toit. Toni has been teaching Playball for 21 years and Careen has been teaching for 16 years.

Toni had just graduated from StellenboschUniversity in 1994 with a Degree in HumanMovement Science. She saw an advertisement in the paper “Do you love children? Do you love sport?” and decided she had nothing to lose by meeting with the CEO of Playball. The meeting took all of 20 min and the rest was history. Playball Somerset West was a reality! Her

business really took off once classes were introduced into the school morning and this fact along with lots of hard work has helped the business to grow to more than 400 children at present. In 1999 Careen

also spotted the same kind of advertisement and decided to follow a new direction after 12 years of teaching and venture into her 2 passions: Sport and Children. She took over the existing Stellenbosch Playball franchise with 60 children. . Now many years later her business

has also gone from strength to strength and is currently running on 600 children. It can be quite daunting running a new business alone and Careen and Toni soon decided to invest in a third business together. They bought the existing Strand/Gordons Bay Franchise and have been running successfully since 2002 with an average of 250-300 children.

They have been working as business partners ever since and run both the separate businesses and joint business on the same solid principles:▪ Honesty ▪ Integrity▪ Loyalty ▪ Friendliness▪ Helpfulness ▪ Love for children▪ Passion for teaching ... to name buta few things.

The CEO’s advice would always be: “DO WHAT YOU DO THE RIGHT WAY AND YOUR BUSINESS WILL GROW.”Thanks to lots of hard work and belief in their franchises and the Playball concept, they have a very successful business! They employ 4 lovely coaches whose dedication and passion for Playball is an asset to their business and their long standing relationship is a real source of pride for Toni and Careen. Jonelle has been coaching for 12 years, Corne and Karen have each been coaching for 5 years and Maryke has been coaching for 3 years.

REG VIR REVUE!

Seuns:0/18 A verloor 0-1 (Joshua Apples)0/18 B gelyk 1-1 (Keanu Jason)0/16 A wen 3-1 (Marco de Kock)0/14 A gelyk 0-0 (Collin Janse van Rensburg)Dogters:0/18 A verloor 1-2 (Heleen Petzer)0/18 B gelyk 1-1 (Andrea du Preez)0/18 C verloor 0-2 (Lene Burger)0/16 A wen 1-0 (Jana Lombard)0/16 B wen 2-0 (Zanri Breytenbach)0/14A verloor 0-1 (Ane Beukes)

WHAT A TREAT IS WAS, INDEED!This musical, performed by ninety Parel Valleiers, was the perfect mix of professional actors, energised dancers, PV’s own band and upcoming singing sensations; one could not ask for more! The cast and directors of the musical really achieved the cultural excellence that they set out to accomplish.Congratulations to the entire cast, Mrs Sonia Manthey (director), Mrs Gerda von Mollendorff (music director), Mrs Edene Mackenzie (dance co-ordinator) and Mr

Willem Steenkamp (production co-ordinator), ALL PROUD TEACHERS OF PV who led this musical. You created endless opportunities for learners to discover hidden talents, to build their character and to form lasting friendships- while having fun! We look forward to the next musical in 2019.Parel Vallei would also like to specially thank the sponsors: KWIKSPAR SOMERSET @ LION SQUARE, THE KARSTEN GROUP (LOURENSFORD) and the ROLA MOTOR GROUP.

BACK TO THE 80’S … THE TOTALLY AWESOME MUSICAL!

GIRLS’ HOCKEY Qiyaam Darries, wing of the u.19B rugby team at Hottentots-Holland High School, makes an excellent try-saving tackle on the opposing team from Hermanus.

RUGBY

Jesse Visser…..Adrian Bosch and Jessé Visser, u.19A rugby players at Hottentots-Holland High School, committing heavily into the tackle on Hermanus’s flanker preventing him from scoring a try. F.l.t.r.: Jessé Visser, Adrian Bosch, Robin Burger, Nile Toke-Toke, Dylan November (vice-captain), Breyton Hendricks and Keagan Daniels.
