Report cards not allowed to be deniedWestern Cape Minister of Education, Deb-bie Schäffer has announced that no reportcards will be withheld at the end of thisschool year. She says schools are no longerallowed to withhold the report card of stu-dents whose school fees have not been paidup todate. Schäffer says that schools arenotallowedtowithholdreportcardsforanyrea-sonwhatsoever. All parents are urged to re-port such a practice to their nearest districtoffice should this be happening at theirchild’s school. Sheurges all principals to re-lease all leaners’ report cards on the datespecified. If any complaints of this mattershould be reported to the department, theschool in question will be investigated andfurther actions will be taken as required.
Parents who are in the position to settletheir children’s school fees should do so.Schäffer reminds parents though thatschools can take legal action against par-ents who owe fees and do not qualify for ex-emption or partial exemption. School feesare an important source of additional in-come inpublic schools and theStudentGov-erning Body is allowed to take legal stepsto recover those fees. Parents can, however, qualify for exemption if the school fees aremore than 10% of the parents combined an-nual salary. Schäffer says, ‘‘regardless oftheparents financialpositiontheprincipalscannot discriminate against our learners’’.Thereareprocessesinplaceforparentswhocannot afford to pay the school fees.

Cash is not always king for business owners over the festive seasonFor robbers, the festive season isindeedthetimetobejolly.Likeus, criminals love the festive season.
“Unfortunately it’s our retail sec-tor that suffers themost,” says Rich-ard Phillips, joint CEO of Cash Con-nect Management Solutions.Cash Connect Management Solu-
tions offers an end-to-end cash man-agement solution that encompassescash in transit logistics, securitymanagement and cash processing.
Business owners need to under-stand the police and security compa-nies can only do so much. Many business owners still use
traditional or manual cash manage-ment solutions.South African business owners
need to rethink the ways they man-age and safeguard their cash. They are making themselves
vulnerable simply because theydon’temploysafercashmanagementsolutions.
With more than 90% of businessrobberies taking place with insiderparticipation, businesses and retailstores are easy targets.“With the latest technological ad-
vances, cashhandling forbusinessesover the festive season no longerneeds to be dangerous. Acting as themiddleman, we now have cashman-agement solutions that remove therisk and facilitate fast, efficient set-tlement directly into the bank ac-countandminimisingtheopportuni-
ty for external or internal theft. It’sup to business owners to take advan-tage of this technology,” says Phil-lips.He suggests the following:. Make use of electronic transfers
toavoidpayingwages incash toyourstaff.
. Avoid broadcasting when cashwill manually be taken to the bankfor deposit.
. Alternate the days and timeswhen you deposit cash.
. Donot openlydisplay themoneyyou are depositing while you arestanding at an ATM or in a bankqueue.
. Avoid carrying money bags orbriefcases when approaching anATM or when standing in a bankqueue.
. Alternate between bank bran-ches or ATMs so your banking pat-tern is not easily recognisable.
. Refrain fromdriving to thebankin your company-branded vehicle.

Local Facebook group providescentral point for donationsThe Chariots for Charity Daywill be held at the Southey’sVines grounds on Saturday 13December.
Donations of clothing, childrens’car and booster seats, toys, station-ery, cleaning products, pet food andother paraphernalia can bedropped off between 10:00 to 16:00.Thesedonationswill bedistribut-
ed toMasikhule, theRescueAnimalDrive (RAD), Ukukhanya, SingleParents Helping Hands, the Somer-set West Night Shelter, Patch,ACVV Bright Lights, Little Angelsand Lost and Found Pets. This charity drive was initiated
by Chariots for Charity, a local or-ganisation formed to ensure amoreeffective distribution of donations.
The idea was started by the Hel-derberg Community Facebookgroup where members identifiedthe issue that residents often haveso much they would like to donatebut do not know which non-profitorganisation or charity to give to.The organisers of Chariots of
Charity have also found that onecharity may be overwhelmed withdonations for short periods of timewhile others go without.“We realised more and more that
we need to create a platform or avehicle wheremembers of our com-munity can plug into existing initi-atives and support those alreadyworking in the field to do what theydo to thebest of theirabilities,” saysIsabel Tarling, spokesperson forChariots for Charity.
“While people some may want tosupport babies, othersmightywantto help children from single parenthomes to go to school dignified, clean and with the necessary booksor may want to help abandonedpets.“Thus we wanted to support the
broadest range of NGOs and chari-ties possible and create a spacewhere everyone in the communitycan give to their favourite cause inone central location,” she says.Nino Messina, known as Helder-
berg’s braai master, will have a firegoing where members of the Hel-derberg Community Facebookgroup can enjoy a braai together. For further information contact
Isabel Tarling at [email protected] or phone 082 602 4543.
