City to curbwheelie bin theftAt least two cases of stolen wheelie binsare reported to the Lwandle Police eachday.
TheCityofCapeTownis rollingoutanewplan which aims to prevent theft and im-prove service delivery.TheCitywill be fitting each240 litre black
wheeliebinintheHelderbergareawithelec-tronic tags that will assist them inmonitor-ing service delivery and recovering stolendustbins.Almost R1 billion is spend on replacing
wheelie bins each year, and therefore thetaggingsystemisbeingimplementedtocurbthis expense.SergeantMthokozisiGama,spokesperson
for the Lwandle Police, said there has beenan increase in wheelie bin theft in the area.“It is believed that the bins are being sto-
leneitherforthepurposeoftransportingsto-len goods, or to sell to other Lwandle resi-dents.”Police warn that “individuals found to be
inpossessionof dustbinswhich they cannotprove tobe theirswill bearrested forposses-sion of presumed stolen property.”
He added that people found to be usingdustbins to transport items “will be finedand have their dustbin confiscated.”Gama said that in order for someone to
have their wheelie bin replaced, they needto report the case to the police so that localcouncil can issue a replacement bin.The City will be commencing the tagging
process over the next few months.Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, the City’s
