Firefighting costs unknownJAMEY GORDON

Close to 250 firefightersworked around theclock for almost threeconsecutive days to ex-tinguish the raging veg-etation fire, whichbrokeoutonSirLowry’sPass last Thursday.

The fire broke out nearSteenbras Dam around13:05 on Thursday 8 Janu-ary and was finally extin-guished onSunday 11 Jan-uary.City of Cape Town Fire Services

spokesperson Theo Layne says thefire was brought under control bySaturday morning.“More than 200 firefighters from

Nature Conservation, Cape Pine,Bulk Water, Working on Fire, theOverberg Municipality and the Citywere on the scene for the remainderof the day, extinguishing hotspotsand monitoring the fire.”During thecourseof theoperation,

six helicopters and three fixed-wing

water bombers were called in to wa-ter bomb areaswhichwere inaccess-ible to firefighters, with pilots col-lecting water from Steenbras Dam.On Saturday, the choppers were

standby to assist with any possibleflare-ups. By this time, the billows ofsmoke which engulfed the Helder-berg had disappeared.Layne says a reassessment was

done at 18:00 as the wind was expect-ed to pick up. “Thereweremanyhot-spots andminor flare-upswhich hadto be dealt with.”

OnSundaymorning, 120firefighters were on thescene to monitor the fire.By nightfall, Layne says, only 35 firefighters werekeeping a watchful eye toensure no flare-ups.OnMondaymorning, 12

January, a senior officervisited the scene to con-duct a final assessment. When asked about the

cost incurred by the Cityto extinguish the fire,Layne says: “The costingwill only be done once the

fire report has been completed,whichcouldtakeuptosevendaysaft-er the incident.”Layne adds that even an estimate

would be “near impossible”.He says a total of 104 vehicles were

on the scene at various times duringthe firefighting effort.“These were different rescue vehi-

cles which means that there are dif-ferent costs involved. It now needsto be determined what needs to becosted and at which rate this shouldbe done.”

Lose your holiday flab quicklyHave you been overindulging injustabouteverythingoverthefes-tive season? Here’s how to makesure that festive gut doesn’t hangaround.

CardioCardio exercises involve some se-

rious fat burning – which would begreat if we weren’t all back at ourdesks now, slouched in front of ourcomputers like sloths with opposa-ble thumbs.

So don’t waste your precious exer-cise timewith yoga andPilates – ton-ing and core strength training canwait until you are back in shape. Tolose inches fast, you want to be onthebike, in thepoolor simplypound-ing the pavement.

Go greenStudies have shown that green tea

may not only flush out the toxins leftover fromyourholiday indulgences, but can also speed up your metabo-lism. Sowhynotmakeupa few litresin the morning and knock it backthroughout theday? It’s perfectly ac-ceptable hot or cold and an easy wayto cut the calory content of that beertankard which inexplicably weldeditself to your hand during the holi-days.Eat for fuel, not for excessYou know what to eat; just make

sure it’s on hand so you don’t con-stantly findyourself reaching for thetake-out menu. Stock up on berries, low fat muesli for breakfast and diginto high protein, low fat salads at

lunchtime. But don’t make the all-too-common mistake of trying to cutout fats altogether. Good fats can ac-tually help you lose weight, so bustyourcravingswithrapeseedoil,wal-nuts, eggs and skinned chickenthighs.Don’t starve yourselfIt may seem counter-intuitive, but

not eating doesn’t make you thin –eating properly does. Skippingbreakfast just lowers your metabo-lism for the day, while upping yourhungry-cranky factor. Try con-sciously eating six small portions aday and see for yourself. Try to in-clude all four of these simple practic-es into your daily routine and yourabs will be popping in no time.

Summertime photosHelderberg beacheswere packedwith sun seekers, residents andholidaymakers eagerto take a summer splash over the festive period.

Some locals used their cameras to capture the holiday fever and share their holiday photo-graphs taken on our beaches during the holidays.

Herman Poole of Strand took this photograph ofBikini Beach in Gordon’s Bay on 26 December whenhewent jogging in themorning. Poole says it remind-ed him of the Tsunami in Thailand on the sameday in 2004.

Herman Poole says the start of the Spring tide caused the road to flood at Bikini Beach on 26 December. He had to wait 10 minutes for the road to clear before he could resume his jog.

Charmaine Bester van Strand het die foto van die sonsondergang op 2 Januarie met haar selfoon geneem.Bester sê haar ouers, van Vrystaat, is hier met vakansie en dat hulle verstom was toe die son eers om19:57 onder gaan.

Local amateur photographer Gideon Nel took this photograph on Strand Beach when he and his familyvisited the beach on 23 December. Nel says the beach was crowded on the day. “It’s the first time inyears that I have seen it this full at that time of the year, and we have not been to the beach since,as it became even busier in the days to follow.”

Sesjarige Maaliah Witbooi van Stellenbosch het hopepret op die strand gehad en heeldag in die water bal-jaar en sandkastele gebou, toe sy en haar ma Strandop 2 Januarie besoek het.

Support group for adults fostered at youthFostered Adult Children Together (FACT) is asupport group for adults who were separatedfrom their parents as children and lived in fos-ter care. The group was established because many

adults who were foster children, struggle withemotional and psychological problems later inlife. These problems are often only highlighted

later in their lives. The group aims to get teenagers and adults

together in one place to support each other andfind a sense of belonging. The format of FACT is based on that of anAA

session. The group will meet at the MethodistChurch in Church Street, Strand at 19:00 onWednesday 21 January.

City reviews its janitorial programmeVarious factors, includingdisagreementsaboutrecruitment from communities, has led to theCity of Cape Town reviewing its janitorial pro-gramme.According to a council statement, the pro-

gramme has proven ineffective in various com-munities across the metropole. This includessome Helderberg informal settlements. The programme, which was first rolled out

frommid-2012 until last year, includes the dailycleaning of flush toilets, standpipes and sur-rounding areas; minor repairs to flush toilets;andreportingofall instanceswheremoreexten-sive repairs are needed.Ininformalsettlements, toiletshavebeenpro-

vided at a ratio of one toilet per 3,2 households. But a recent assessment has shown anumber

of factors have negatively impacted the project. These include ongoing disagreements in com-munities about recruitment, resulting in thefailure to recruit any janitors; a lack of supportfrom community leaders; excessive vandalismof facilities; threats to the safety of City staff

monitoring progress; and faults not being re-ported.“We have decided that resources used for the

janitorial service in certain areaswill be reallo-cated to the City’s maintenance and cleansingteams, resulting in quicker response times andmore frequent cleansing around the toilets,”says Mayoral Committee member for UtilityServices, Ernest Sonnenberg.TheprocesscommencedonSaturday10Janu-

ary, while the janitorial programme will stillrun in 104 areas.“The scalingbackof this programmedoesnot

meanthat theseareaswillnotreceiveanymain-tenance and cleansing services,” Sonnenbergexplains. “The janitorial service is an addition-al service, over and above the services alreadydelivered by theCity. The existing serviceswillcontinue as before;merely additional janitorialservices have been reduced.”According to the results of the assessment,

83% of the areas initially involved in the pro-gramme showed that it had been successful.
