Cleaning bins is her businessJAMEY GORDON

To clean a 240 litre refuse bin, which is often very dirty and of-fensively smelly, is a job mostpeople would shy away from. However,ZanabArnold (43) fromStrand has a strong stomach, ispassionate about what she doesand not at all afraid of the hardlabour it requires.

Zanabmatriculated fromHabibiaGirls’ College in Rylands in 1988.She helped in the bakery, Copacaba-na,ownedbyher latedad,YusufJap-pie, before she married in 1990 andworked as a department head atFriedman & Cohen. After eight years she moved on to

Builders Warehouse where she wasemployed as a buyer. In 2007 Zanab resigned and decid-

ed to invest her time and effort intocatering full time for an income. Shemade and sold savoury treats likesamoosas, pies, spring rolls and lit-tle pizzas.Zanabsays therewere timeswhen

business was booming, but therewere also times that shedidn’tmakeany money. In September 2012 she attended a

business management workshopheldat theUniversityof theWesternCape, which motivated her to startamobilerefusebincleaningservice.Zanab says that she was aware

that such a service exists, but feltthat therewasaneedforanotheronein the Helderberg. In March 2013 Fresh Binz was

launched and Zanab started outwith three customers. She would goaround on foot from door to door inher community promoting the serv-ice with a free demonstration to at-tract more customers. Zanab ex-plains that she would collect thebins, take it home and clean it, and

drop it off later.By October that year she had 20

customers and the demand showeda gradual increase. In January Zanabwas completely

mobile after she spent their savingsto invest inatrailerwithageneratorand water pump.Thismeant that two bins at a time

could be lifted onto the trailer to bewashed with a disinfectant gel andsprayed and brushed with an oil-based deodoriser.Zanab now has 200 customers

from all over the Helderberg and itssurrounds. She says to get these cus-tomers she followed theWaste-Marttrucks and as soon as the bins wereemptied, she would go to the peoplethe bins belonged to and offer herservices.Seda (Small Enterprise Develop-

ment Agency) also assisted by fund-ing the advertising on her trailer.Customers have two options to

choose fromwhenmakinguse of theservices of Fresh Binz: a full washat R89 which entails a wash every

weekforamonth;or twowasheseve-ry second week at R55.Pensioners receive a 10 percent

discount on each option. For the moment, Zanab says she

only operates from Mondays toWednesdays between 08:00 and17:00. However, she hopes to changeher operating days to a full operat-ingweekwhen she expands to areasother than the Helderberg – whichis her long-term goal.Zanab attributes the success of

her small business to her belief that“where there’sawill, there’saway.”“Yes, you will face obstacles but

the trick is not to give up,” saysZanab, who is motivated even moreby the satisfaction of her customersand the growth of her business.Zanab says it is empowering to be

a woman and doing what she is do-ing and motivates other women notto stand back for anything in life, nomatter how big the challenge. For more information contact

Helderberg’s HIV figuresremain constantCASSY VAN EEDEN

The South African National AIDS Council(Sanac) announced earlier this year that therate of HIV/AIDS infections in the Helder-berg in the 2013/2014 year has neither de-creased nor increased.

This is according to pastorColin vanWyk,chairperson of the Multi-Sectional ActionTeam (MSAT) for the Helderberg district.

“After all our efforts with testing, educa-tionandcondomising, for thatnumber tonotcome down is very disappointing,” said vanWyk.

MSATcommitteememberRozetteAdams,of local non-profit organisation (NPO) Mas-incedane, said that she thinks that thisnumber is not decreasing because of a seri-ous issue that various health workers facein the Helderberg communities: “ignoranceand irresponsibility.”

Adams explained that “people are igno-rant, even though we have so much informa-tionout there andwework sohardonadailybasis at educating our communities.”

“People don’t want to change their life-styles,” said van Wyk

Adams noted that despite the fact that shedistributes over a million condoms permonth in lower-income communities, peo-ple still do not practice safe sex.

She said that it is verydifficult for commu-nity care workers in these areas to get thosepeople who are infected with HIV/AIDS orTBtoactuallyadhere to their treatments, de-spite the fact that the services are free andprovided directly to them in their own com-munity.

She explained that community care work-ers have to spend hours going above and be-yond their call of duty by having to visit pa-

tients at their homes to try to convince themto attend their respective clinics or NGOs toreceive treatment and counselling.

The problem, however, is not as straight-forwardaspeoplesimplynotwantingtoseektreatment, said van Wyk.

“In these communities, it is important tounderstandthatpeopleareaffectedbyunem-ployment andpoverty,”which impacts theirself-esteem.

Heexplainedthatifapersondoesnotvaluethemselves much because of their circum-stances, they may wonder what the use ofgetting treatment is.

Adams added that HIV/AIDS patients willalso dealwith “shock, depression, denialismand anger,” which also affects whether ornot they adhere to their treatment.

Another factor that affects patients nottaking their medication is side-effects.

Adams explains that the side effects ofantiretrovirals (ARVs) can last for “up to amonth,” before the person’s body “settlesdown,” she said.

She said that the side-effects of ARVs canmake the person “feel like they’re dying, sothey think why should I take this when itmakes me feel so bad.”

This is where the community care work-ers can step in to help these people, said Ad-ams.

“They motivate people not to give up andstop treatment.”

Van Wyk explained that there are manysuccess stories in Helderberg communities. He said that MSAT sees that over 5 000 resi-dents are tested per year at their five aware-ness events.

“We want people to know that anyone canlive a meaningful life with HIV, it is possibleto live positive,” he said.

Right to strike should notinfringe on others’ rightsIn SouthAfricaweare privileged enoughto have the constitutional right to strikeand to be protected when we do so.However, one of our human rights as

citizens in this beautiful country is thatwe do not have the right to infringe onanyone else’s human rights. And so, when we strike we have the

right to be protectedand the right to free-dom of speech, but wedo not have the right todamage property thatdoes not belong to us,orendanger the livesofothers. This includesthrowing stones, intimidating innocentbystanders and using petrol bombs orany otherweapons on police or any othercitizen.Recently, the Helderberg Gazette post-

ed an online article about the ongoingNumsa strikes in the Helderberg. Some-one commented on this post, referring tothe protesters as “savages”.The second comment on this post,

which should best not be repeated, at-tempted to draw a parallel between theskin colour of the people striking and the

colour of dirt at the bottom of a bin.I was horrified and immediately delet-

ed the comments.Again, we have the right to freedom of

speech, but we do not have the right topromotehate speechor inciteviolenceonany other person or party. There are a lot of violent strikes taking

place in our preciousHelderberg at the mo-ment, many of whichare unprotected. The Numsa strike in

particular has re-mained peaceful, de-spite the fact that the

same strike has caused serious issuesthroughout the rest of the country.Sowhycall themsavages?Aretheysav-

agesbecause theyaremakinguseof theirright tostriketodrawattentiontothe factthat they earn merely R3 000 per month?I do not think so. Especially because thisgroup in particular have behaved so ad-mirably.The housing strikes in Somerset West

last week, however, got out of hand andpeople were injured and their safety wasendangered.
