Little fighter inspires in a big wayTAMSYN JANTJIES
Inam Gege had just celebrat-ed his first birthday, whendoctors at Helderberg Hospi-tal gave him just six weeks tolive.
But more than two years afterthe horrifying news, the three-year-old has defied the odds andis living his life as best he can.
Inam suffered from Tubercu-losis Meningitis (TBM) and hy-drocephalus when he was justolder than a year. A shunt wasinserted to drain fluid from hisbrain and he was placed in ahome for children with specialneeds.
It was there that Anne Jacobsfell in love with the little boy.She often took him to her homeover weekends to spend timewith her family.
“I have a passion for workingwith children with specialneeds. Inam just crept into myheart,” she says.
In November 2012, doctors broke the newsthat thepressureon Inam’sbrainwasbuildingup. “Doctors told me to take him back to thecare centre and make him as comfortable aspossible,” Anne recalls.
But the centre did not offer palliative care, which meant Inam would have to be placed atanother facility. “I simply could not allow thatto happen,” Anne tells Helderberg Gazette.
Along with some of her colleagues, Annetook care of Inam at her home, taking turnsto provide him with around-the-clock care.
At first, Anne says, they experienced diffi-culty as Inam regularly suffered from fits. “Itwaspure torturehavingto listentohisshallowbreathing.”
They then met a woman who markets a foodsupplement which assists the body in rebuild-ing cells. “I was sceptical about the product
at first, but I researched it and de-cided it could do no harm.”
Late on the fourth day of usingthe supplement, Inam gave a loudcry. “We woke up to a loud wailand were up in a flash. Inam, whocould make no sounds, had givenhis first cry,” Anne says.
Meanwhile, Anne had appliedfor and was granted foster care ofInam; he still lives with her.
Sheisintheprocessofestablish-ing a foundation, in his name, forchildren with special needs andpalliative care.
The Inam Gege Foundation isstill in its early stages, but Anneand the organisation’s directorshave big plans. “We would like tostart a centre with around-the-clock care for children with spe-cial needs. There is a big need forsuch a facility in the Helderberg,as there are many parents whosimplydon’tknowwhat todowiththeir children when they go towork,” Anne explains.
“We have gone through all thenecessaryproceduresand filled inall theneed-ed documentation for this to happen, but weare still in dire need of a premises.”
The foundation will hold a fundraisingbreakfast at the Somerset West United ChurchonSaturday18April.Tickets,atR100, includesentry to participate in an auction on the day.To attend or donate to the foundation, contactAnne on 074 870 9754 or [email protected].
Anne Jacobs and her husband Gavin are smitten with Inam Gege who, in 2012,was given only six weeks to live. The boy now lives with them and their two children.

Eery superstitions no longerfazes Helderberg residentsFriday 13 March was thesecondFriday the13thcele-brated this year. But itseems locals are no longerbothered by superstitionsand said bad luck associat-edwith theday.HelderbergGazette took to the streetto ask residents their takeon Friday the 13th.
SISUSA MASXOLE: I don’t believein any superstitions – or this dateand day. To me, Friday the 13th isjust another normal day.
THERESA MCCARTHY: To be hon-est, I am a little superstitious butFriday the 13th has always beena lucky day for me. No, I don’t be-lieve this day is bad luck at all.
MTUMTUM MBALI: I am not a su-perstitious person at all. Life justtakes its natural course as far asI’m concerned. I really don’t seeall the fuss about this specific dateon this specific day.
CAANITA FREDRICKS: I just donot believe in Friday the 13th.What if someone’s birthday hap-pens to fall on that day, then peo-ple want to label it as a badomen? No, I don’t think it’s rele-vant in our time.
MEGAN LAUBSCHER: Personally,I think you make your own goodluck or bad luck. Dates and daysdon’t have much to do with whathappens daily.
JOYCE BENJAMIN: Ek glo nie aansulke goed nie; dis net ’n doodnor-male dag. My God is saam met myen daaraan glo ek.
XOLELWA NANI: I don’t believe inFriday the 13th. My day has beenabsolutely great so far. It is just an-other date and another day on thecalendar. PHOTOS: TAMSYN JANTJIES

The bodies represent all sectors of theschool community, including parents, teachers, non-teaching staff and learners ingrades 8 to 12.Governed by the South African Schools
Act, the forum has considerable powers togovern schools. The provincial education department en-
courages all parents to participate in thenomination and election process to ensurethe school serves the best interests of theirchildren.“While SGBmembers do not have to have
formal qualifications, we urge parents withskills in bookkeeping, accounting and legalservices to consider standing for election,”says provincial education minister, DebbieSchäffer.Thetermofoffice forelectedmemberswill
be three years and the duties of the SGB in-clude:
) the school’s constitution and missionstatement;
) code of conduct;) budget and financial management;) recommendingstaff appointments; and) supporting the principal, teachers and
other staff.Furthermore, the department has under-
taken to provide elected members withtraining and support by officials who spe-cialise in school management and govern-ance.
Last month, principals, who will act aselectoral officers, already underwent train-ing and received training manuals whichcovers every aspect of the elections. All parents and legal guardians of chil-
