lingsarea (IOA) in Sir Lowrys Pass is gister (Maan-

jaar in gebruik geneem.

Nie-

mand is beseer nie.

by bure geslaap.

    herstelword.SiphiweMakibi staanhier in sydaklo-

For the love of South Africa

    TAMSYN JANTJIES

    Patrick Cromwell describes himself as

    extremelyproudtobeaSouthAfricancit-

izen and he has taken it upon himself to

    create awareness of other Awesome

    South Africans.

    The Helderberg resident has set-up

    www.awesomesouthafricans.co.za to show-

    case themanySouthAfricans doing extraor-

dinary things. The likes of adventurerRiaan

Manser and amputee Paul Steyn are some of

the Awesome South Africans currently fea-

    turedon the site,whichhestarted inSeptem-

    ber last year.

His decision to highlight the awesome

    workandadventuresofSouthAfricanscame

    afterherealisedtheydonotreceivetheneces-

sary exposure for their great achievements.

    Addedtothis, theStrandresidenthasfaced

some difficulties over the years, but heman-

aged to triumph in the end.

In October 1999, Cromwell was struck by

a rock flung throughhis carswindscreen on

    theN2.Hehadtoundergoreconstructivesur-

gery to rectify the extensive damage to his

    face.

After the surgery, he moved to Holland,

where he worked as a forklift driver at a dog

    food company.

But one day, he decided to do more with

    his life.

    Heenrolled inan internet courseat anight

    schooland foundhimselfwanting tobroaden

his knowledge on the topic. Cromwell then

decided to enrol in a beginner web design

    course.

Before then, I had no idea what a right

click was, but when I got into it, I just gelled

with what I was learning, he says.

Cromwell was eventually employed in the

customer care department of an American

    company in Holland.

But after living and working abroad for

two and a half years, he returned home for

    a holiday.

When I went back to Holland, I immedi-

ately felt homesick. So I went straight to my

boss to quit, Cromwell tells Helderberg Ga-

    zette.

    Hemovedbackhomeanddidsomeoddjobs

    beforehestartedhisownwebdesigningcom-

    pany, WebDzign, in 2005.

Cromwell is a huge fan of the outdoors and

keeps up-to-date on SouthAfricans doing ex-

ceptional things in the outdoors. Most of

them go on these adventures to raise funds

    andawareness forotherpeople,not for them-

    selves.

He is passionate about his brainchild. I

spend more time maintaining the site than

    I should, Cromwell admits.

The project will be on show at the annual

    CapeGetawayShowatLourensfordWineEs-

tate from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 March.

In the future, we wants to better manage

the public relations side of his website and

would like to dedicate all his resources and

    time on it.

I get no compensation for it; I purely do

it for the love of Awesome South Africans.

Patrick Cromwell has a love for all things South African and anything to do with the outdoors. He

combined the two loves and created an even bigger love, www.awesomesouthafticans.co.za, where

he highlights South Africans braving the outdoors for a cause.

Helderberg residents have their say on this years budget

    FinanceMinisterNhlanhlaNenesbudget speechon lastTuesday

(24 February) saw a substantial increase in sin tax, with the cost

of a packet of 20 cigarettes increasing by 82c, beer by 15,5c, spar-

    klingwineby48canda750mlbottleofwhiskeybyR3,77.Electrici-

ty will increase by 2c and the fuel levy was raised with 80,5c.

    Welcomenewswasthatpensionerscanlookforwardtoanextra

R60 in their wallet, child grants will increase to R330 and foster

grants have increased by R30 to R860.

The Helderberg Gazette asked locals for their views.

    Denver Arendse van Strand meen

die pensioentoelaag is te min en

stem nie saam met die elektrisiteit-

    verhoging nie. Hy stemsaammetdie

styging in belasting op sterk drank,

maar s dat die regering meer geld

    aan behuising moet bestee.

    FOTOS: DELIAH BRINKHUIS

Shimone October van Strand is te-

vrede met die staatstoelae wat ver-

hoog het, asook die sin-tax. Sy s

    egter dat die lewenskoste styg,

    maardat die inkomstedieselfdebly.

Foto links: Ria Smit, n pensioena-

ris, s die toelaag-verhoging is nie

    voldoende nie omdat die lewens-

    koste hoog is. Die brandstofheffing

sal ook verder hiertoe bydra, meen

    sy.

    Sadree Spies, n pensioenaris, is

    tevrede met die pensioenverho-

ging. Sy voel egter dat elektrisiteits-

    verbruikers wat meer gebruik meer

    belasting moet betaal.

Keith Sauls van Macassar is n ro-

ker wat twee pakkies sigarette per

dag rook.

koop. The things we cannot chan-

    ge, we have to accept,

    IvanHartley vanStrand stemsaam

met die verhoging in sin tax. Hy

voel egter dat besighede te swaar

belas word en dat die brandstof-

    heffing te hoog is.

    Ntobeko Tonisi from Asanda Vil-

lage says the 2015 budget is not

    favourable for poor citizens. He

says he agrees with the hike in sin

tax, as smoking contributes to ill-

    ness and government funding has

to pay for treatment. People driv-

ing under the influence of alcohol

    cause accidents and the govern-

ment has to fund the Road Acci-

dent Fund as well. Electricity is a

necessity which we cannot be with-

out. Government needs to find an

    alternative, like solar power.

    Campbell Mack s die ongeskikt-

heidstoelaag is te min. Die verho-

ging help nie, want ander uitgawes

soos krag, kos en skoolonkoste is

    hor as dit, meen hy.

Nie- mand is beseer nie.
