Somerset West girl tells of her life in EgyptTAMSYN JANTJIES
AlmaasBagusisalively, animatedyoung lady fromSomerset Park inSomerset West, who recently re-turned from a year-long stay inEgypt.
She says theEgypt sheexperiencedis not the same as the Egypt we seeon television. During her time in thecountry, Almaas lived in Nasr City,Cairo.
Almaas visited the country as partof anexchangeprogrammeofAFS In-terculture Programme. She initiallyapproached AFS for a scholarship to

An excited Almaas could not waitforheradventuretooneof theworld’soldest country’s to begin.
Both her parents have encouragedtheir only daughter to travel theworld before settling down.
Sitting at theHelderbergGazette of-fice, accompanied byhermother, sheexcitedly tells tales about pyramids, fermented fish and sleeping in thedesert.
During her time in Egypt, Almaassays nothing drastic or life threaten-

“While standing in a bank queue,my host father noticed a robot ordrone wheel to a stop right next tohim. As it rolled away, he realised ithad removed a bomb,” she says.
“Wherever you go in Egypt, thereis always military presence. All theshopping malls have metal detectors, which took some getting used to’’.

She says she prefers South African

more organised and the teachers doabetter job. The student-teacher rela-tionship in Egypt is also good,” sheexplains.
She says she also missed celebrat-ingEidathome.“InEgypt,Christiansare very respectful during the monthofRamadaan,whileMuslimsrespect-ed the Christian period of Lent,” Al-maas recalls.
“On the day of Eid, I especiallymissed home. The two countries cul-tures do not celebrate the holy day inthe same way. I really missed mymother’s cooking; the main dish in
Egyptwas fermented fish, whichwasnot my favourite dish.”
Almaas’smother, Shaakira says: “Iam very proud of my daughter. Sheis mature and strong. Despite somenegative comments, she made themost of the opportunity.”

Informal trade needs inputA call from the City of Cape Townfor locals’ suggestions on how toimprove the informal tradingacross the metropole, maystrengthen the ever-growing sec-tor.
The City’s Economic Develop-ment Department launched theCitymart Challenge last week.
It aims to, through submissionsof ideas and suggestions, improveinfrastructure at one of the morethan 4 000 informal trading sitesmanaged by the City.
“Through this call, we hope torejuvenate informal trading, bysoliciting input from the publicwhich could provide possible so-lutions to the challenges or prob-lems the sector is facing,” ex-plains Mayoral Committee mem-ber for Tourism, Events andEconomic Development, GarrethBloor.
“As a significant contributor toour economy, it is important forthis sector to grow, and this is anopportunity for the community tobepartofmakingprogressbysub-mitting solutions that aim to pro-vide better quality services, with-in the available resources.”
A statement says the sector rep-resents about 12% of Cape Town’seconomy and employs about 18%of residents.
The City currently has 2 497trading sites registered on its sys-tem. But the City manages morethan 4 000 informal business sitesin the city centre, informal settle-ments, rural areas and at touristhot spots.
“Where possible, the City pro-
vides trading infrastructure suchashard-surfacedareas, fixed trad-ing stands, roof structures and, insome instances, ancillary servi-ces such as access to water andelectricityatsomesites. However,in many cases, the infrastructurethatisprovidedcanbeimproved,”Bloor states.
“Solutions can include infra-structure proposals such as creat-ing stands that are maintainable,cost-effective or easy to transport,as well as how to optimise sitemanagement and to improve cus-tomer experience.”
For the challenge, the City ispartnering with Citymart, a glob-al organisation focused on open-ing government processes to civicinnovation through engagementwith residents.
Once the suggestions have beensubmitted, the viable solutionswill be selected to help strengthenthe City’s approach to informaltrading through knowledge shar-ing, apilotproject orademonstra-tion.
The platform will also offer in-formal traders the opportunity tobe exposed to best practice in theindustry worldwide.
To submit suggestions, visithttp://my.citymart.com/Call/CoCT_economic_innovation tosubmit solutions.
Informal traders who do nothave access to a smartphone areencouraged to make use of theCity’s freeSmartCape internet ac-cess at libraries.
The deadline for submissions isThursday 16 April.

SHARING THE LOVE: In celebration of Valentine’s day, staffers of Shoprite Macassar baked two cakes and deliveredit to the old age home in Macassar. All the other Shoprite stores also baked cakes for the elderly in their communities.
Snake bites: what not to doSnakebites canaffect body func-tions inminutesandcanbe fatal.Anyone bitten should visit amedical practitioner.
Doctor Vernon Wessels fromER24 says a medical practitionerwill be able to assess if a bite is ven-omous, the depth of the bite and ifthere is possibly underlying struc-ture damage such as tendonsheaths or joint spaces that mayhave been penetrated. It is impor-tant not to panic.
“Panicking increases blood cir-culation, therefore the patientshould be kept calm. Apply a ban-dage to the area as this limits lym-phatic drainage. The affected areashould be kept still to limit move-ment,” says Wessels.
A description of the snake would
be useful if possible, but there areother ways to identify the venomby looking at the symptoms of thepatient.
Snake expert Arno Naudé saysthe most commonly encounteredlethal snakesare thespittingcobra, puff adder, snouted cobra, Cape co-bra and black mamba.
Rinkhals are commonly encoun-tered but rarely bite, just like theboomslang.
If you come across a snake, tryto get away from it or freeze to de-termine in which direction thesnake is moving.
Bites from potentially lethalsnakes can cause traumatic inju-ries through tissue destruction orneurological problems.
Smaller adders and snakes, likeburrowing asps, can cause swell-
ing, pain and tissue death (necro-sis).
Snake venom can kill by eithercausing muscle failure, whichcauses paralysis and suffocation.
“It may also cause the body to gointo shock and the organs to shutdown. In some cases it can alsocause bleeding, which may lead todeath,” Naudé said.
What not to do when bitten by asnake:
) Do not wash or cut the woundor try to suck out the venom;
) Do not use home remedies; noice, heat packs or electrical shocksshould be used.
) Alcohol and aspirin should beavoided.
) No tourniquet should be tiedaround the affected area.

Cupid’s cupcake surpriseThe Halli Trust brightened up thelearners of Tereo School’s Valen-tine’s day when they took cup-cakes they received from Verge-zicht Private School in Stellen-bosch.
Zander Vermeulen, Jeniel Naude, Sannette Gibson, Nicola Steele, Edgar Cloete, SuzanneCilliers and Jamie Lopes brought boxes filled with elaborately decorated cupcakes to giveto the learners of Tereo School on the Friday before Valentine’s day.
The principal, Naomi Ferreira, arranged all the learners in neat rowsbefore they could receive their treats.
Infectious smiles all around was the orderof the day.

Erijaville United-rugby klub is in Mei2012deurNicholasKordomenbestuurs-lede gestig.
Bel Nicholas Kordom by 072 150 0918vir meer inligting.
Die Erijaville United-rugbyspanne is almal mal oor hul afrigter wat ook hul klub se stigter is. Hulle is dankbaar vir die geleentheid wat hulle help omvan die strate af te bly. FOTO: TAMSYN JANTJIES
