This is according to Jannie Frieslaar, chair- person of the Strand Community Police Forum (CPF) and member of the Broadlands Park Neighbourhood Watch after illegal firearms and drugs were confiscated from minors in a period of one week. Frieslaar says two 9 mm firearms were found in the bedroom of a 15-year-old. A young- er family member had allegedly come across the firearms where they was hidden in a cup- board. It is alleged that the minor had been influenced by a gang member to keep the weap- ons. Frieslaar says the firearms were confiscat- ed. He says this incident is the second where a minor was involved in concealing items that may be intended for criminal activity. An 11-year-old was also found with more than 200 tik straws in his parents’ home in Broadlands Park last week. Frieslaar says that the drugs were confiscated and given to the police and that the child was handed over to the Strand Police. “These children are involved with the wrong people,” Frieslaar says, “They don’t attend school and become involved with gang mem- bers who use them.” Frieslaar says there is one major gang in Broadlands Park and members from two other Cape Flats gangs are also migrating to the area. Constable Mbulelo Mafuna, spokesperson for the Strand Police, says two men were ar- rested in Broadlands Park for the possession of illegal firearms on 14 February. The sus- pects are in custody and have not been granted bail. They appeared in the Magistrate’s Court for the second time since their arrest yesterday (24 February). Frieslaar also said the neighbourhood watch and the Strand Police have closed down operations of five drug houses in Broad- lands Park. This is a victory for the teams as a lot of crime in the community has its root at these drug houses. “We are cleaning up the streets of our com- munity,” Frieslaar says. He warns parents that they and their chil- dren will be arrested should illegal firearms or drugs be found at their homes. Frieslaar says par- ents should at all times be aware of their chil- dren’s behaviour and who they are involved with. “Parents need to keep an eye on their children and if neces- sary look through their things to see if they are hiding items that potentially may have criminal repercussions,” he said. Frieslaar says anyone who is found on the premises of drug houses, including children, will be arrested right away. e b d w w k c

Who is the greater criminal here, theWho is the greater criminal here, thesuspect or the police?suspect or the police?ShortlyafterwewishedMadiba“Hambakahle”andwithheartfelt, mostsinceresentimentsstillreverberating globally, my deepest fear wasconfirmed when I witnessed a defenceless manbeing brutalised: assaulted by the police first,thenbyacarguardandafterwards,veryviolent-ly, by yet another big man, in full public view.

Twenty years of democracy and the newSouth Africa is a place of shame. Madiba is pro-verbially the man from Nazareth but rejectedby fellow Nazarene because the Madiba stand-ard is just too high to do. This was confirmedon Friday 10 January.

The incident happened behind the StrandTownHall,atabout14:30.Ayoungforeigner fledfrom the police.

Weweregladwhentheassumedcriminalwascaught. However, what followed was sickening.

He sat on the side walk: hand-cuffed and sur-rounded by, among others, four policemen. Ap-proaching the scene I witnessed one policemankick the man hard against the sole of his feet.Another bystander said he also witnessed a carguard do the same.

Worst was when a big guy appeared from no-where and kicked the handcuffed man veryhard on his mouth. He fell backwards with asubdued groan. People in nearby flats watchedfrom above; no one said a word or objected tothis treatment of the man.

A while ago my wife saw a warning on TVthat the public should not confront the policeas some are dangerous.

AndsoI initiallywaspreventedfrominterfer-ing. An Afrikaans speaking man approachedand challenged the policemen saying: “Youmean if my son was arrested for stealing a choc-olate anyone would be free to assault him as

well!”And thank heavens some of us maintain a

senseof justice;a feeling for fellowhumansirre-spective of the person; some still think andstand up to confront and challenge wrong. Godbless this dear brother.

A bystander believed that the assaulted manwas one of two thieves and couldn’t confirm ifa chocolate was involved; someone mentionedrobbery.

The question is: who is the greater criminal? And while the law has caught up with him willit catch up with bad police, who sanctimonious-ly ask of Joy Citizen, not to take the law intoherownhandsbutdo just thatbyhandingdownsentence without charge or verdict? And whilejustice will be meted out to him, they get awayfree...

A constitution ensuringheavenonearthand,StMadiba, alighttoplanetearth:allspectacularand awe inspiring against the sombre sky, butjustice needs to be done and we, by the looksof it, in a thousand years, will be unable to riseto the occasion.

Simple solutionto diarrhoeaThe Western Cape Government HealthDepartmenturgesparentsandcare-giv-ers to take special care of infants andchildren under the age of five duringthis diarrhoea season.

Diarrhoea disease is a major cause ofchildhood mortality in the WesternCape Province. Children under the ageof 5 years and infants are particularlyvulnerable to the disease. It is directlylinked to poor hygiene and sanitationandmostcommonlycausedbycontami-nated water and poor bottle hygiene inthe preparation of formula food.

Western Cape Health Minister,Theuns Botha, said that the sugar-saltsolution is a simple way that can savea life. “Parents and care-givers shouldbe aware how vulnerable our childrenare. Especially at this time we need tobe on the lookout for the symptoms thatcan lead to diarrhoea. Washing handsregularly with soap and water is a goodstart.”

If your child suffers from diarrhoeaor has a runny tummy, vomits or refus-es tobreast-feed, thenaSugar-SaltSolu-tion is recommended. A mixture of 1 Fof clean water, 8 teaspoons of sugar andhalf a teaspoon of salt can be given toa child to drink regularly. However, should the signs persist; the child mustbe taken to the nearest clinic immedi-ately. Diarrhoea can be prevented bywashing hands regularly. Parentsshould protect their families by havingsafe and healthy meals.
