No tolerance for women and child abuseToday (25 November) marks thestart of the 16 Days of Activism ofno violence against women andchildren. It is also InternationalDay of no violence against wom-en.

The international campaign is inits13thyearandrunsuntil 10Decem-ber, which is International HumanRights Day. The 16 Days of No vio-lence against women and childrenaims to address the high incidenceof, and to eliminate violence againstwomen and children.TheHelderberg Gazette took to the

streets and asked readers what theythink of the campaign.

Alicia Mqikela (Asanda Village): As awomanwith children I hope that we will never be violatedor abused. Abuse in any form is unacceptable anda terrible experience to have.

Momeleza Mhlungwani (Blackheath):These bad things that happen to children are notgood for them. They have the right to a good andsafe life, and to be educated. Those committingthese crimes against women and children are notin a healthy state of mind.

Carmen Jansen (Strand): It is totallyunaccept-able. The community should stand up against thepeople committing these crimes and not turn ablind eye. If any of us know of someone who isgoing through this we should help them and notlet them go through it alone.

Marshall Arendse (Macassar): People whohurt their children like that have noheart. Offendersgo to jail and get out after a short period and thenjust go back to committing the same crimes. Strict-er laws and longer jail sentences should definitelybe applied. PHOTOS: TAMSYN JANTJIES

Natasha Stoffels (Macassar): People whoabuse women and children should be sentencedto jail for 10 years or more without parole. Theirsentences are too short, they get out of jail anddo the same thing again and again. A crime isa crime and people must be punished.

As mense weetvan sulke gevalle moet hulle dit dadelik by diepolisie rapporteer.

Swimming lessons for Gr 1sIn the aftermath of the tragic death of a Gr1 learner of Sir Lowry’s Primary School, theGr 1sarenowbeinggivenswimming lessons.

Livenkosi Magobolo (7), drowned on 30 Oc-tober when he and four friends, also Gr 1,went to swim in the Bos-en-Dal dam in thevillage after school.

It is believed that Livenkosi and anotherboy fell off a boat, and that Livenkosi failedto resurface.

Police divers found his body at about 23:00that night after his father Bukhosekhi Kuhlehad filed a missing person report at the Sir

Lowry’s Pass police when Livenkosi did notreturn from school that day.

A local resident, Ruth Kraus, decided afterthat to arrange for the Gr 1s to go for swim-ming lessons to try and prevent another trag-edy like this occuring. The 170 Gr 1s now re-ceive free swimming lessons at the Strandmunicipal pool three times a week.Kraus also arranges transport for the chil-dren to be able to attend the lessons.

She says that she hopes Sir Lowry’s Passwill one day have a community swimmingpool.

Every cake is a masterpieceJAMEY GORDON

Chantelle Gleed (32) fromSomerset West has had a passionforbaking ever since she could re-member.

As a little girl she would nag hermomeveryschoolholidaytohelpherbake chocolate cookies froma recipeshe found in a children’s book. Nowshe is finally living her passion.

Chantelle has been baking in herspare time for years, but it waswhenshe fell ill in June last year and washospitalisedafterher lungcollapsed, that shedecided topursueherdreamof being a professional baker andcake decorator.

“It was an eye opener. I realisedthat life was too short not to live alife you really love,” says Chantelle.

The avid, self-taught baker previ-ously worked as a tour operator andlater assisted her husband, who is aboat broker, with administrative du-ties.

In February this year, Chantelleenrolled in a six-week baking andcake decorating course at La PetitePatisserie to upskill herself.

Upon completion of the course shedecided to do her own thing, and so,in April Chantelle’s Cake Creationswas launched.

Chantelle specialises in bakingand decorating wedding and noveltycakes, and cupcakes for all occa-sions. She believes in using qualityingredients and that her cakes needto look good, but taste even better.

According to Chantelle there isnothing worse than a dry cake thatlacks in taste and she has done a lotof recipe testing to ensure that her

cakes taste great but stay moist andfresh.

“My husband and family are tiredof eating cake already, but I’ll havecake every day and even for break-fast,” laughs Chantelle.

She creates cakes from her homein Saint Emilion Street in all sizesand with a variety of fillings.

Her chocolate ganache cake is awinner among many, but the ulti-mate favourite is still her red velvetcake with cream cheese frosting.

For Chantelle baking a cake can

take anything from three to fourhours. It can then takes her betweenfour to 10 hours to decorate the cake.

Chantelle says the most time shehas spent decorating a cake was aweek.

This particular cake was a two-tiered Frozen-themed castle cakewith three figurines.

She reckons she becomes a “realpain” when it comes to paying atten-tion to detail and spending time per-fecting the detailing on a cake.

She recalls making the face of a fi-gurine for a cake 16 times before itwas perfect. “It might sound ridicu-lous, but in the end this is what setsme apart from the rest.”

For Chantelle the satisfaction thatcomes with seeing her clients’ faceslight up when they see her creation, justifies having to sit face down forhours on end during the creationprocess.

The most challenging cake Chan-telle had to make is a massive LouisVuitton handbag that could survivea flight to Johannesburg.

She says the strangest request fora cake to date, was a naked torsocake.

“Even though I’m modest and old-fashioned and suggested a few ideasto cover the naked torso, it’s notaboutwhat Iwantbutwhat theclientwants.”

Chantelle will be exhibiting a se-lection of beautifully designed cakesand cupcakes at the Cake and BakeShowattheCapeTownInternationalConvention Centre. The Cake andBake Show is a world-famous eventin the United Kingdom that has nowbeen brought to South Africa on 29and 30 November.
