The Helderberg Street People’s Centre inSomerset West is facing some difficult deci-sionsas its current leasewith theCityofCapeTownwas not renewed during full council onThursday. The lease was not renewed and in fact, therenewal of the lease would be considered anillegal decision according to the city’s by-laws, as the municipal building situated inVictoria Street is earmarked as part of theproposed transport hub for Somerset West. The proposed SomersetWest Public Trans-port Interchange that aims to improve publictransport, is still in the concept design phaseand a detailed design is only expected to becompleted by the end of winter.Ian Greer, chairperson of the HelderbergStreet People’s Centre, says he is not sur-prised by the recommendation because therehad been discussions with the City of Cape

Town beforehand. He does, however, feel dis-appointed by the decision and believes itwould not be too much of a burden for theCity of Cape Town to keep the centre in thebuildingonamonth tomonthbasisuntil suchtime that the premises are needed for thetransport hub.Council allowed the centre to operate in thecurrent premises until September. The cen-trehasbeen renting thepremises onamonth-to-month basis for the past two years. The centre has appointed an estate agentto find new premises, but Greer says so farthe search has not produced anything suita-ble.The Helderberg Street People’s Centrefeeds about 200 people a day at the centre andfrom there food is distributed to a further 800to 1 000 people in various communities. Thecentre also provides people with clothes andblankets and employs five local people. It wasestablished in 2001 by a group of churches.

Children have the right to playCASSY VAN EEDEN

Wednesday28MaywasWorldPlay Day, a day that focuseson a child’s right to play.Cotlands in Somerset West

held an exciting event in cele-brationof thedayat theirEar-ly Childhood DevelopmentCentre in Macassar (see pic-tures on page 11).I attended the event and it

gotme thinkingabout theval-ue of playing as a child. It isasadfact inourcountry

thatmanychildrenare forcedto take on responsibilitiesthat are meant for peoplemuch older than them due toa variety of circumstances.Oftenchildrenwillhave tobe-come the head of the house-hold and will be expected toleaveschool toworkor tocare

for younger children. This will of course mean

that the child will have verylittle timetoengagewiththeirhomework and to play.So these situations are a

double whammy really, notonly is the child forced to takeon an adult’s roles, but theyare unable to fulfil their fun-damental right to play.As the CEO of Cotlands

said, “some people see play asfrivolous.” Many people as-sume that children just playbecause that’s what childrendo. But what many people donot realise is just how vital

the role of play is in a child’slife.Throughout childhood,

playing lays a strong founda-tion for future learning, itbuilds up self-confidence andteacheschildren tobecuriousand creative.Did you not learn that a

square peg does not fit into around hole or that mixingblue and red paintmakes pur-ple through play?Mypoint is, do not underes-

timate the power of play, nev-er discourage a child fromplaying -exceptwhenit isbed-time of course - and most im-portantly, spend time playingwith your child. Childrenhave the right to be cared forand to feel safe, but they alsohave the right to play, whichin my opinion as important.

Badisa provides vital services in communityCASSY VAN EEDEN

Badisa Strand is a community organisation, established in 2003, that works specificallywith children in the Helderberg. One of the vital services that they provide

is an aftercare programme that children canattend after school, to focus on their home-work with assistance from volunteers. Thelearners at the aftercare also receive lunchmade at Badisa from ingredients that are do-nated by various sponsors in theHelderberg.

After their afternoon session, Odette Gor-don, the aftercare coordinator, drives all thechildren to their homes. The aftercare operates from 14:00 to 15:30

every afternoon at the Badisa Strand premis-es. The programme is currently registered toassist up to 30 children of which about 20 at-tend the aftercare facilities daily. Fees for theaftercare vary from as little as R20 per week.Badisa also has four social workers who

deal with various issues that children andtheir families experience. They deal primari-

lywith foster care children and oversee theircare in foster homes. Through their Parent-ing Skills Programme, Badisa also providesguidance to parents so that they are able toraise their children.Theorganisationspendsa lot of timeworking on family re-unificationand providing children and parents with in-valuable life skills. The organisation also works with some of

the local daymothers to ensure that childrenin their care are being adequately preparedfor entry into Grade R.

Although Badisa receives a governmentsubsidy, they are always in need of assist-ance. The centre desperately needs assist-ance in the printing of their newsletters andAGM documents and would greatly appreci-ate clothingandblanketdonations for adults,childrenandbabies.Badisawouldalsoappre-ciate any sponsorship towards the purchas-ing of a mini bus to transport the children.Readers can contact Odette Gordon on

Fun and games for children at World Play DayCASSY VAN EEDEN

Cotlands in Somerset West held aspecial event for young childrenat their EarlyChildhoodDevelop-ment Centre in Macassar onWednesday last week (28 May).Cotlands, whose aim is to developtomorrow’s leaders, believestrongly in a child’s right to play.

“Somepeople seeplayas frivolous, but for young children it’s the foun-dation of life-long learning,” saidJackie Schoeman, CEO of Cotlands.“It’s more than just play,” she said,“even the simplest of games can helpunlock skills required for formallearning.”The theme for this year’s World

Play Day was children’s rights andresponsibilities, which focusedmostly on teaching children abouttheir rights.“Due to numerous circumstances

many children have to assume adultroles and responsibilities,” saidSchoeman, “and it leaves little timeforschoolworkandeven less time forplay.”The event inMacassarhadnumer-

ous play stations involving all kindsof activities from dancing, arts andcrafts, obstacle courses and hop-scotch.The stations were run by volun-

teers from all over the Helderberg, whogaveuptheir timetonurture theyoungmindsof thechildrenwhopar-ticipated in Wolrd Play Day.
