Many uses forbicarbonate of sodaBicarbonate of soda – more commonlyknown as “bicarb” hasmore uses than youmay know.

It is mainly used with baking powder and asa raising agent and is also commonly used toneutralise odours, as a cleaning agent and evenas an effective and safe way to relieve indiges-tion and constipation. Here are some other us-es for bicarbonate of soda that you may notknow about:

Fridge or freezer: To get rid of odours inyour fridge, place an open container of bicarbinto the fridge and it will absorb all bad smells.Stir the bicarb every two weeks and replaceit every two months.

Dustbins: To clean and neutralise dustbinodours, add one teaspoon of bicarb to the water

you use when cleaning your bin.Cat Litter: Bicarb is great for absorbing cat

litter odours. Cover the bottom of the box withone part bicarbonate of soda and then add alayer of three parts cat litter.

Drains: Unblock drains by adding four ta-blespoons of bicarb into them each week. Flushwith hot water each time.

Burnt pots and pans: To clean burnt potsand pans, soak them in three tablespoons ofbicarb and hot water before washing.

Brushes and combs: Clean brushes andcombs by soaking them in a basin of water withone tablespoon of bicarb.

A handy hint is to always use exactly theamount of bicarbonate of soda called for in arecipe and it is best not to substitute it withbaking powder as the two react differently.

questioned,HelderbergGazette 23September” it isalarming to see the IN2FOOD company’s re-sponse. They talk about how good they are to-wards their clients, but neglect to say that it isthe employer’s responsibility to arrange trans-port fortheemployees,at thecompany’sexpense, from 18:00. Companies think they are doing theemployees a favour when in fact the employeesare relieving the pressure due to the company’sbad planning. At this time of the year the clients’demands are high, for which companies shouldplan ahead.
