Wow, where has 2015 gone?! Can you believe it’s only 5 weeks until schools close and 8 weeks until Christmas?

It’s been a jam-packed year with sports, academics, concerts, social events, award ceremonies etc …

I’m sure that the one thing on every teacher, student and (especially) parents’ mind is final exams, eeck! But in the very wise words of my favourite little fish, Dory: “Just keep swimming”.

From the AWSUM team we’d like to wish you all good luck with the last stretch, we know that you’ll be doing your absolute best.

We hope you enjoy this issue

of AWSUM, also remember to look out for the winners of our Facebook competition. The winners will be announced on 30 October.

Till next time.Tenille & the AWSUM Team

7 HOT GARDEN TIPS:1. Do not mow your lawn for a week prior and a week after spraying it with herbicides. This might irritate you, but it will give the herbicide the best chance to deal with the abundance of pesky weeds which sprouted during winter.

2. Start mulching your garden, leaving no bare earth uncovered – this will help the garden cope with high temperatures and hot summer winds to come. Watch out for red spider mite on roses, fuchsias and Azaleas.

3. Now that waterblommetjies are starting to go dormant in ponds, try something grassy around the edge and in the water. Go for tufty Juncus

effusus, a perennial grass- or reed-like plant which loves growing in streambeds and marshes.

4. For colour all summer, plant pelargoniums! These beauties like plenty of light, well drained soil, water when the soil feels dry and good air circulation. Feed them every two weeks with a water soluble fertiliser – they are very tough, but very hungry plants!

5. Spray your apple and pear trees towards the end of the month for coddling moth. Keep on watering citrus trees regularly and deeply.

6. Cucumbers are quick growers and ready for harvesting in only 2 months. They can be planted in the garden or in pots as they grow upwards and do not take up much space. Ensure that soil is well composted and kept moist.

7. Fine Mediterranean herbs to grow are Rosmarinus ‘Tuscan Blue’ with its lovely sky blue flowers and long stems (which can be used as fragrant skewers for sosaties), Santolina chamaecyparissus (cotton lavender) with aromatic, lemony smelling, grey foliage and mustard yellow pompom flowers.

Die span is deur me.

WITH SUMMER IN FULL SWING THERE IS NO BETTER TIME TO EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN...

BANANA SUGAR BODY SCRUBWhen the bananas are starting to brown, grab those beauties and put them to use. This one skips the oil and relies purely on the benefit of banana and the gently abrasive sugar.• 1 ripe banana• 3 tablespoons granulated sugar• ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract or your favorite essential oil (optional)Smash ingredients together with a fork into a chunky goop. Don’t over-mash or it will become

The best way to maintain healthy looking, glowing skin is to use a body scrub. We have created a list of ten body scrubs you can make at home. Not only do you get the benefit of saving money, but they are all natural which means NO chemicals. Don’t forget to apply moisturiser or body butter after using any kind of scrub.

too thin. If you want a banana scrub for your face, reserve some of the banana and mash it separately without sugar. In the shower, pat the sugar mixture and gently massage over your body. For your face, gently massage plain banana there, avoiding the eye area. Rinse off with warm water.

VANILLA COCONUT BROWN SUGAR SCRUBCoconut oil is subtly fragrant and slightly miraculous. This one is a super moisturizer, and can practically double as dessert.• 1/2 cup coconut oil• 1/2 cup brown sugar• 1/2 teaspoon vanillaMix ingredients together. Rub on skin while in the shower, massage, and rinse.

6 oud-Louwtjies is onlangs by verskillende Hoërskole as hoofleiers vir 2016 aangewys.

But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah’s mysterious dad is in fact R.L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. As Zach starts learning about the strange family next door, he soon discovers that Stine holds a dangerous secret: the creatures that his stories made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. In a crazy night of adventure, it’s up to Zach, Hannah, Champ, and Stine to team up and get all of these figments of Stine’s imagination – including Slappy the Dummy, the girl with the

haunted mask, the gnomes and many more – back in the books where they belong to save the town. PG10.
