ERGT’s Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) course is designed for personnel working offshore who are respon-sible for the duties of Helicopter Landing Officer. The requirement for these competencies is determined by
the Offshore Petroleum (Safety) Regulations 2009, Civil Aviation Publication CAP437 (Dec 08 Rev), CAAP92 - 2 (1) Guidelines for establishment and use of helicopter landing sites and International Civil Aviation
Organisation (ICAO) Annex 14 Volume 2.

LEARNING OUTCOMESThe expected learning outcomes of this course are:- Offshore helicopter operations and general safety- Features of Helideck landing areas- Helideck safety equipment and procedures- Role of the HLO and Helideck team- Communication procedures- Helideck emergencies- Basic meteorology- Relevant legislation and actsRECOMMENDED SKILLS & KNOWLEDGEIndustry recommends that the HLO’s attain current qualifications in:- Offshore / Maritime Fire Fighting and Breathing Apparatus- Respond to a Helideck Incident OR equivalent- Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC)- Emergency Response Team Leader (highly recommended)STRUCTURE & ASSESSMENTThis course is delivered using classroom presentations, activities and participant discussion as well as practical components within a simulated workplace environment using specialised equipment including a helideck and decommissioned helicopter. Trainees will demonstrate their competence through direct observation, oral &/or written assessment & practical exercises.
CERTIFICATIONUpon successful completion trainees will be issued with a Certificate of Training and Assessment in:Helicopter Landing Officer A Certificate of Training and Assessment is not to compe-tency training. Trainees demonstrate practical skills in informatively assessed guided practice scenarios. There is no collection and verification of individual trainee knowl-edge, though there is continuous verbal questioning and verification of trainees’ knowledge and understanding on a group basis.SKILLS MAINTENANCEIn alignment with industry expectations and to ensure ongoing competence and capability ERGT recommends skills maintenance be conducted every 2 years.
