A title to go here

Protective gear a lifesaverTimmy has a passion for kite buggying –but a nasty accident very nearly putpaid to this last October. Whilst out withfriends on Westward Ho! beach, Tim’safternoon came to an abrupt halt whena sudden wind squall lifted him and hisbuggy several feet into the air, dumpinghim back on the ground, head first.

Concerned aboutconcussion andpossible spinalinjuries, friendsand spectatorswere relieved tosee the Devon AirAmbulance arrive. He was airlifted toNorth DevonDistrict Hospital,Barnstaple forfurther tests. Amazingly he wasdischarged later that day, suffering onlyfrom bumps and bruises.

The shock of the incident really hithome when Tim saw his helmet andgoggles, both of which had taken thefull impact.

“I do believe I could have died had I notbeen wearing protective gear. Myhelmet and goggles were completelysmashed and all that damage wouldhave been to my head and face! Thissport is great fun, and provided therecognised safety procedures arefollowed, it really isn’t dangerous.”

Merryn and Archie

“You never imagine needing the AirAmbulance for your own family, butwhen that moment arrives, you reallycome to appreciate what a wonderfulresource we have.”

We also received a lovely letter fromfive year old brother Archie, along with£43. He wanted to raise some moneyand had sold his favourite videos.

Airlift for two week old babyMerryn was only two weeks old when shewas airlifted from remote Dartmoor. Onher first family outing, Merryn was beingcarried in a sling by her dad when hetripped and fell. Abruptly woken up,Merryn cried out loudly. Almostimmediately her body became rigid andshe slipped into a very deep sleep. Unableto rouse her, the family called 999 and theAir Ambulance was sent.

Mum Chrissy said “The sound of thehelicopter arriving overhead waswonderful! Paramedics Helen and Eddiewere fantastic; they were brilliant withMerryn and so reassuring to me as a newmum. After spending the afternoon in A&E,we were allowed to take Merryn home. She was diagnosed as having suffered fromshock combined with a jolt to the headfrom which, fortunately, she rapidlyrecovered.”

On the way to heaven...We recently took a call from Gina whowished to express grateful thanks to thecrew who airlifted her mum, 90 year oldLydia. Sadly her mum passed away, butGina and the family are reassured to know

that Lydia would have been delighted tohave finally had a ride in a helicopter, being looked after by lovely paramedics. They believe she decided that “whilst shewas half way to heaven, she would justcarry on going.”

Did you know? The income raised from our red collection boxes during 2010 was a massive £189,240.28 !

Huge thanks to the outlets who have one of our boxes, our box collectors and everyone

who has donated during the year.

Weather is snow problem

North Devon base senior pilot Pete Martintold us about about his experiences duringthe recent snowy weather...

“Despite most roads in North Devon beingimpassable to all but the hardiest 4X4vehicles, all of the crew were on base by8.30am. Two had slept at the base inanticipation of the extreme weather.

Devon Air Ambulance Trust

Operational newsParamedic Mark Hawley had cleared thehelipad 3 times by 7.30am. Welcome helparrived shortly after with two local farmersand their tractors, fitted with snow ploughs.

We were able to go on line by 8.30am andwere called to our first mission of the day at9.25am. We also flew to Torbay Hospital topick up the Exeter pilot, who had been turnedback by the Police as he battled to get overHaldon Hill, meaning both aircraft wereonline 1.15pm.”

A BIG thank you to the farmers mentioned above and those who help our crews out indifficult times such as this.

On occasions we also work with otherhelicopter services, perhaps when the locationof the incident is particularly challenging, including the RAF Search & Rescue fromChivenor and the Royal Navy Search & Rescuebased in Cornwall. Recently we workedalongside the Maritime Coastguard Agencyhelicopter when a lady fell, hurting her leg onthe coastal footpath near Sidmouth in EastDevon. See photo opposite.

Mum’s the word

Brave Little SamSam was just one year old when he wasairlifted, after being scalded over his face, chest and arm by boiling black tea.

His mum, Becca, was relieved when the AirAmbulance arrived and was able to conveySam to the specialist burns unit at FrenchayHospital in Bristol, along with dad Ian ajourney which took just 12 minutes!

Becca followed with Sam’s baby brotherHarry, just 4 days old, leaving big brotherJack, aged 2, being looked after by his Godparents.

‘There wasn’t room for me and Harry to go inthe Air Ambulance, but I’m so glad that Iancould travel with Sam. We are all so gratefulthat the helicopter got Sam to hospital soquickly his recovery has been so muchsmoother for receiving urgent treatment.’

Such was the gratitude of Becca, Ian andtheir boys, Becca organised a party for Ian’s40th birthday and requested donations toDAAT in lieu of presents. The party was ahuge success and raised a magnificent £350into the bargain!

One family ... two airliftsBridget was extremely grateful whendaughter Dannee was airlifted fromMerton to North Devon District Hospitalin 2005 having been kicked in the backby a horse. Despite losing part of herkidney, Dannee (now 20) has sincemade a good recovery.

However, Bridget has recently gonethrough the whole rollercoaster ofemotions again when son Dean, 23, wascrushed by a falling tree in a field ontheir farm, and again, the Devon AirAmbulance was called. The tree had tobe sawn off while paramedics Kate andEddie stabilised Dean and he was takento the RD&E Hospital in Exeter, sufferingfrom a compressed fracture in his backand a leg broken in three places. Deanand Dannee are pictured below.

Bridget said “Despite everything, we feelvery lucky. I will never be able to put intowords the overwhelming relief when Iheard the noise of the helicopterapproaching. This isn’t a story, this is forreal two siblings one family who areand will be forever grateful to the DevonAir Ambulance.”

Airbase visit for expatientsA bright, sunny, early spring day saw themeeting of no less than 9 expatients atthe North Devon Airbase at Eaglescott. From Isabel, aged 21 months, to Win,aged 101 years young, all were able tomeet paramedics Dave and Kate and pilotPete and to see the helicopter that hadbeen involved in their rescue. All agreed that the day had been verytherapeutic and, in some cases, filled thegaps of missing memory from the day oftheir incidents.

Trodden on by her horseClaire’s first thought when she fell off herhorse was to keep hold of the rein.

However, she hadn’t reckoned on thehorse turning and treading on her.

Struggling to breathe, Claire was airlifted toRD&E Hospital in Exeter, where it wasestablished she had a lacerated liver anda hoof print to prove it! After a week inhospital and three months recovery, Claireis now well.
