“our literature… is deep, fresh and original, punch-ing far above its weight in awards and world sales.” Jackie French

Jackie French, Senior Australian of the Year 2015, and best-selling author of over 170 books, is the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2014 – 2015.

This year, Jackie is a special guest of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and will be participating in a dynamic international Laureate program of events at the Second International Laureate Summit during the Fair:• Sunday afternoon – private Laureate function• Monday – Growing the Laureate movement – by invitation• Tuesday–OfficialSummit–forgeneraladmission• Wednesday - Australian Stand Party, talk by Jackie, by invitation

Jackie is dyslexic and a strong advocate for the right of ALL children to be taught to read with the methods best suited to them.

‘Every child can learn to read. Every child must learn to read, or they are cut off from jobs, social life, social media, and the written heritage of humanity.’– Jackie French

Jackie French estimates that in 2014 she spoke to about 60,000 young people in person and by video link, School of the Air, internet chat rooms, speaker phone, email and letters.

In January, the Australian Children’s Laureate team launched a ‘Reading Calendar’ for 2015, a joint work by Jackie French, Justine Alltimes, illustrator Ann James and designer Judy Watson, encouraging children to share, create and enjoy stories together. For March’s theme, Navigate a Story, we can follow Jackie’s trip to the 2015 Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy, and her participation in the second International Children’s Laureate Summit, live through the Laureate blog and social media.

The Australian Children’s Literature Alliance would like to thank the following sponsors for enabling this tour to happen:

The Australia Council for the Arts; Books Illustrated; Bolinda Au-dio Borrow Box Library; Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund; the Australian Publishers Association Children’s Publishers Commit-

tee; and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Committee.

An Exhibition of Australian Children’s Book Illustration

Hello! from Australia is an annual exhibition that celebrates Australian children’s

book illustration at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. It’s an initiative of the Austra-

lian Publishers Association in partnership with Books Illustrated and funded by the

Copyright Agency since 2009.

The exhibition supports publishers in the promotion and sale of rights of Australian

books and facilitates contact between Australian publishers and international

publishers, agents and promoters. In broader terms it aims to promote Australian

literary culture internationally and to draw attention to, and showcase, the

diversity and excellence of Australian children’s books.

Following the annual Bologna Book Fairs, the Hello! from Australia Exhibition has

toured to other Book festivals and events, mainly in Asia.

The 2011 exhibition was shown at Paju Bookcity in South Korea. The 2012 exhibi-

tion toured throughout South Korea beginning at Paju Bookcity for the Booksori

Festival, followed by an exhibition at the National Library in Seoul.

In 2013 it was exhibited at the Korea Foundation Cultural Centre Gallery in Seoul;

at Nami Island during the inaugural Illustration Concours; and then went on to be

exhibited in 15 regional libraries in South Korea. The 2013 exhibition was shown

at the Capital Library Beijing in China, during Australian Writers Week. The 2014

exhibition was exhibited on Nami Island as part of the Australia Days Festival in

September 2014.

Expressions of interest from other venues are welcome.

Stella discovers Pro-fessor Sinistair was searching for a tiny package - a package Stella now has in her possession. But what’s so important about it? Reading Australia is a hub for resources, written by teachers for teachers, to bring Aussie stories to life in the classroom. Linked to the curriculum, the resources provide step-by-step activities and tasks, some with supporting multimedia materials.

The not-for-profit Copyright Agency produced Reading Australia in partnership with the major Australian English educator associations, to create a resource for teachers of such high quality it makes a compelling case to choose Australian texts, to share our nation’s stories and to back our authors.

What teachers say about Reading Australia:

“Well written units of work and great choices of texts.”

“I have taught a book I might not otherwise have picked up - great resource!”

Text Marks the Spot is a day for students and teachers to celebrate children’s and young adult writing, illustration, song-writing and more.

Sponsored by La Trobe University, Text Marks the Spot kicks off the vibrant Bendigo

Writers Festival and integrates children’s and young adult creators into the flavour

and buzz of the weekend.

Following in the footsteps of Shaun Tan, Craig Smith and Chris ‘Crikey’ Kennett,

2015 sees a new Bruce Whatley exhibition.

dr what? THE CREATIVE INTENTIONS

AND PRACTISES OF BRUCE WHATLEY.

Bruce Whatley is the much-admired illustrator and

author-illustrator of picture books such as The Ugliest

Dog in the World and the classic Diary of a Wombat.

Curated by children’s literature experts Sarah Mayor Cox

and Paul Morris, the exhibition provides a rare insight into

the mind of this feted artist and showcases his brilliance.
