FUN FACTS

» July in other languages: German - juli, French - juillet, Italian - luglio, Portuguese - julho, Spanish - julio.

» July starts on the same day of the week as April in every year, and January in leap years.

» July was named by the Roman Senate in honor of the Roman general, Julius Caesar, it being the month of his birth. Prior to that, it was called Quintilis.

» Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1870. The holiday does not celebrate the signing of the Declaration; it celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress.

» Jefferson’s original draft of the Declaration of Independence was lost and the one eventually signed is the “engrossed” document.

» Today, the original copy of the Declaration is housed in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

» Revolutionary War. Some historians believe this display was meant to boost morale.
