Sendera Recreation Committee news

Submitted by Suzann Vera

And the Winners Are…. On October 30th from 7:00-9:00pm diligent judges from the Sendera Recreation committee went around the neighborhood and selected the 20 best decorated homes for the 2009 Halloween Decorating Contest. Thank you to all of the residents who decorated. The neighborhood looked festive and spooky. Winners were awarded a trophy and either a pumpkin or ghost porch light cover. Maybe while trick-or-treating you noticed the cool covers on the winners’ homes.

With the holiday season upon us, we tend to think of others, more than ourselves. We are often preoccupied with decorations, parties, what gifts to buy, etc. All this combined with our other activities of daily living can lead to a very stressful time. What is stress? According to Hans Selye, a world renowned Canadian endocrinologist, stress is defined as the body’s non-specific response to any demand made upon it. (Selye, 1974) This stress may be emotional or physical. Professionals at the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami estimate that upward of ninety percent of disease is stress related. Stress is a normal part of life and moderate levels of stress can be beneficial for certain activities. Too much stress can rob our bodies of energy and health. Our lifestyle today can over tax our body’s systems to the point where we start to breakdown. Prolonged stress can manifest in a variety of ways, such as the inability to think clearly or concentrate, interrupted sleep patterns, nervous exhaustion, muscle tension and pain in the joints, cardio vascular problems and physical fatigue among others. Stress can also lower the body’s natural defenses that help our immune systems ability to fight disease. Pain can cause stress whether it is chronic or acute. Our lifestyles and work patterns have been changing with the emphasis shifting

from physical activity to a more sedentary lifestyle. With all of the information we have to process, we tend to live very active mental lives. Thus mental overload combined with our lack of physical activity results in our body’s getting stressed out causing pain and discomfort. Elevated levels of cortisol (which is a hormone of the adrenals) not only increases stress, but also inhibits our immune functions. Other stress hormones include epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are also secreted by the adrenals mimic the effects of the sympathetic nervous system. Any adrenalin that has not been discharged in some way, remains in the body which can lead to exhaustion and more stress. Stress can be reduced by activation of the relaxation response. Increased levels of dopamine (a neurotransmitter found in the brain) are linked to decreased stress. It has been suggested that increasing serotonin levels (a derivative of tryptophan (an amino acid)) can reduce stress. When we go into a state of deep sleep, a substance called somatostatin (a hormone) is normally released. Without somatostatin, pain is experienced. Humans are subjected to numerous areas of stress. We need to

Q: How can teeth be straightened in only six months?

A: As an adult, your back teeth are in a stable and comfortable position: you bite and chew without problems right? So, why spend 2-3 years moving the back teeth around, when we can just focus on your front teeth and provide you with a great smile in 6 months!

Q: Six months sounds good, but will I still have a mouth full of metal for the whole time?

A: No! This is nothing like the metal-mouth braces that you imagine! Using clear brackets and a tooth colored wire, the braces are almost invisible.

Hello Sendera Residents - (Continued from Cover Page)of our rules. Don't hesitate to go online and fill out an anonymous DVR violation form and report this to our management company. We never disclose where the compalint came from. BARKING DOGS.............you may not hear FIDO barking after awhile but your neighbors do. You don't have to watch Animal Planet TV to know that dogs bark out of boredom, frustration and negelct. Some residents are actually retired, work night shifts or may even do business from their homes. We encourage YOU to immediately report anyone who is disturbing the peace. It is up to you to build a case so make sure to video (with date and time stamp) the many times you are being inconvenienced. I suggest you call in the complaint from out in the back yard where the operator can hear it for themselves. Again please understand our goal is to insure that the appearance of Sendera is clean and tidy. This in turn assists in keeping up the property value of your home. We most certianly appreciate those residents who do comply with our deed restrictions and do the right thing without having to be told to do so. There are many wonderful owners who display their pride in ownership

allow time for the replenishment of our natural resources in order to revitalize our energy. Regular movement and exercise, when done in fresh air, is key to a flexible, healthy and resilient body and looking and feeling well. Exercise is one of the best stress-busting techniques. Exercise increases the body’s endorphin levels (athlete’s high), relaxing muscles, clearing the mind and allowing for deeper sleep. Also, stretching is vital to discharging tension while helping the muscles to stay flexible and toned.Along with regular exercise, we need to remember that sugary snacks and most processed foods help the body release cortisol (the stress hormone). If, however, we lean toward energy that is found in fruits, vegetables and seeds and nuts, we will get more of the slow release of energy and less cortisol release. Drink plenty of water every day, even during the winter. The body uses up nutrients more quickly under stress, especially the B vitamins, C, calcium and magnesium. For some of us, the holiday season can be a very stressful time of year, but let not your heart be troubled. By allowing some time for ourselves we can get back some of that clarity and energy that we need when dealing with the many demands placed on our daily life. As some of the younger generation would say, “chill out”. I would say peace and joy to you and your loved ones this holiday season.

Covington MSSubmitted by Charmaine Watson

Covington Middle School is a place where creativity grows and is celebrated! The Fine Arts Extravaganza welcomes all 5th graders to come to Covington to hear the Covington band, orchestra and choir preform. There will also be presentations by Art and Theatre students as well as displays from foreign language classes. Covington Middle School will send school buses to elementary schools to pick up the 5th graders on Friday, December 4th and they will attend the Extravaganza for 1 hour. You are welcome to attend the Winter Holiday Concerts on December 15th (Covington Choir) and December 17th (Covington Orchestra).

Here's an easy way our community can support Covington: *Donate your old cell phones and used printer cartridges. Properly recycling cell phones and cartridges prevent lead, mercury or cadmium from leaking into our water supply. Not only will you be helping the environment, but also the Covington Keyboarding Dept. will earn money for every donation. Drop them off at the West Office labeled "Ms. Lunsford/Keyboarding"
