Apply for FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at FAFSA.gov.

Winter:

Decide which college or university you will attend next fall.

If required, pay your enrollment deposit.

Complete your housing application.

Watch your email for campus updates.

Make housing arrangements.

Register for college placement tests.

Spring:

Admissions will be looking at grades for your last semester, too. Finish strong!

Take placement tests.

Review financial aid offer(s) from your future campus.

Send final grades from your senior year to the campus you’ll be attending.

Summer:

Sign up for student orientation at your future campus.

FRESHMAN ADMISSIONS POLICYAll parts of the application are considered during the review process. While there’s an emphasis put on academics, campuses understand a student is more than just grades and test scores. Admission offices look at how academics are interconnected with other factors such as work experience and leadership qualities. This allows for a more comprehensive review of applications.

Academic Factors: + Quality of high school coursework+ Class rank+ Grade Point Average (GPA)+ ACT/SAT scores

Other factors considered:+ Work experience+ Leadership qualities+ Community service+ Special talents+ Status as a nontraditional or returning adult student+ Status as a veteran of the U.S. military+ Socioeconomic status+ Member of a historically underrepresented racial or ethnic group

COLLEGE CREDIT IN HIGH SCHOOLEarning college credits while in high school is a great opportunity to save time and money while challenging you as a student and allowing you to experience college courses.

Students can earn credit that transfers to UW System campuses by taking Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams or enrolling in college courses through Wisconsin’s Early College Credit Program.

Courses may be offered online at a UW campus or at your high school. There are different ways to enroll and tuition structure varies based on each option. Information on high school college credit opportunities is found at: uwhelp.wisconsin.edu/hs-credits.

COURSES REQUIRED FOR ADMISSIONAll UW campuses require a minimum of 17 college preparatory credits from high school. Review the specific guidelines for each campus online at: uwhelp.wisconsin.edu/required-courses.

4 English Composition, literature, and rhetoric. Most regular and advanced courses are accepted.

3 Mathematics Algebra, geometry, and other mathematics courses with algebra or geometry prequisites.

3 Natural Science Biology, chemistry, and physics. These courses emphasize theory and include a lab. Other courses often accepted include astronomy, earth science, geology, and physical science.

3 Social Science Theoretical study of culture, history, political science, economics, sociology, and psychology.

4 Electives Chosen from the above areas, foreign language, fine arts, computer science, and other areas.

Applying for CollegeAPPLICATION STEPS

1. Complete the University of Wisconsin System online application at apply.wisconsin.edu.

2. Students must pay a $50 nonrefundable application fee ($60 for UW-Madison) either online with a credit card or by mailing a check to the admissions office to which you are applying. A fee waiver may be available — see online for details.

3. Submit the following documentation for each UW System campus

An official high school transcript. GED or HSED students should submit a copy of their diploma and test scores.

Official college transcripts (if you took college credits in high school).

ACT or SAT scores. Some campuses will want official scores submitted directly from the test agency.

A recommendation letter is only required if you are applying to UW-Madison. However, you may submit letters to other campuses too.

4. After submission, the campus admission office will let you know the application status and next steps.

Paying for College

FINANCIAL AID Grants Grants are awarded based on financial need and do not require repayment.

Scholarships Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academic merit or other specific criteria. Scholarships do not require repayment. Students can find scholarships in their local community, at their campus and through private organizations.

Loans Loans are money students borrow, which must be repaid and typically include interest payments. Government loans typically have lower interest rates than private loans.

Student Employment Student employment is offered through work-study or other on-campus employment.

UW SYSTEM TUITION & FEESTuition and fees — like health services, student activities,organizations and textbook rentals—vary among theUW System campuses.

Non-Resident Tuition Agreements Wisconsin and Minnesota have a tuition reciprocity agreement. The agreement allows residents of one state to attend a public college in the other as a resident student for tuition purposes. Some UW System campuses participate in other non-resident tuition- reduction programs like Return to Wisconsin and the Midwest Student Exchange Program. Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) ROTC programs offer students an opportunity to receive military training and experience.
