What happens to foster youth who age out of the system? Over the last year we have purposefully expanded the program to include youth 18 - 21 years living in transitional housing. In addition to teaching basic kitchen skills (cooking, shopping and meal planning), volunteers are

encouraged to listen for specific ways they can support the youth as they transition into independent living. Most will have few housing options, need help writing a resume, completing a job or college application, or tutoring. Each one will need encouragement. Twelve Supper Clubs sites are supported by volunteers from these partner churches: Menlo Church (Mt. View, Sanctuary, Menlo Park), Trinity Presbyterian, New Creation Church, Venture Christian Church, WestGate, Harbor Light Church, and Santa Teresa Catholic Parish.

Participating Churches The following churches have been directly involved in supporting the mission this fiscal year through in-service appeals, bulletin or e-notices of ministry events and trainings, and/or financial support:

RecruitingLeading the Charge at Garden City Church

When a Church empowers its members to be passionate leaders, ministry thrives. Adam Wegener of Garden City Church (GCC) brought his passion for kids from hard places to Help One Child and said, “Put us to work!” Connecting through GCC’S neighborhood small group network, Adam began by recruiting a crew to staff a Parents’ Night Out, implementing their own creative activities at our location. His team

was inspired and announced “Let’s do it again!” Moved by the foster children he encountered, Adam became an adovocate for the ministry’s Signs of Hope Camp, reaching out to donors and recruiting others to join him as a residential counselor. The growing team at GCC will lead Help One Child’s M-Power program starting January 2016 at a new location, day, and creative curriculum.

A Meal. A Message. A Model. Aimed at children 6 to 12 years old who have experienced a disruption in

early childhood development. The curriculum, which includes a healthy dinner, creatively helps children develop critical communication skills. Volunteer-staffed at a ratio of 1:2 to maximize individual attention, an average of 12 children attended each of the 8 sessions. This was the final year for the program’s sponsorship by the Palo Alto/Mid-Peninsula Junior League. We are grateful for their many years of support!

In August 2014, twenty-eight remarkable volunteers invested over 2,300 service hours as residential counselors and even raised the funds for 61 at-risk youth to enjoy a week of swimming, rock climbing, zip line, water slide and Bible club activities at Mission Springs’ Frontier Ranch.

Volunteer of the Year! For as long as we can remember, Rosemary Elliot-Snow has been working alongside our ministry, so it is about time that we shouted it from the rooftops! For many years, Rosemary has left her mark on many of our events and programs, often the first to greet guests as our registrar. Most well-known as the Santa family portrait photographer (along with husband Dave) and shopper extraordinaire, she is often found purchasing last minute necessities for Signs of Hope Camp, Backpack Drive, Giving Tree, or Christmas Party. No job too small, no request denied. Thank you for your faithful service!

Since 2011, the ministry has been active in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties in the fight against human trafficking. In this effort we have supported and served on the committee to host this annual event for the most vulnerable foster youth. This year, over 70 girls attended and were encouraged by the renowned survivor, inspirational speaker, and nationaly acclaimed advocate, Nola Brantly. We partnered with one of our supporters to host a catered lunch for all in attendance as well as recruited donations from local churches and organizations to provide “welcome home” toiletrie kits, exercise mats, self-filtering water bottles, gift cards, and raffle prizes.
