The Himalaya embraces 14 states in India1 including Himachal Pradesh. The mixed farming

includes crop-livestock-horticulture system in this hillstate. Small millets, maize, rice, wheat, amaranths,

rajmash, barley, apple, peach, pear, plum, potato, pea,

cabbage, cauliflower, french bean and tomato form

major components of the farming systems. The cash

crops are also picking up.

The undulated topography, rugged terrain,

unfavourable cold climate, lack of suitable cropvarieties, inadequate production and marketing

infrastructure are some of the major constraints in

farming, making it a non-viable

proposition. To address to all such

needs, to resolve the farm related

issues and problems of theState and to raise the socio-

economic status of thefarming community ofHimachal Pradesh,Himachal Pradesh Krishi

Vishvavidyalaya (nowChaudhary Sarwan KumarHimachal Pradesh Krishi

Vishvavidyalaya) was established inNovember, 1978. College of Agriculture,established in May,1966, formed the nucleus of newfarm University.

The mandate of the University is : impartingeducation in agriculture and allied sciences,furthering advancement of learning in hillagriculture by research and undertaking extensionof scientific knowledge to the farmers of HimachalPradesh.

The University is situated at Palampur at an elevation

of 1250 metres It is near Pathankot railhead (further

connected with a meter gauge train to Palampur) and

is well connected from all important places of the

country by road and air (Kangra airport is aroun.4 50

Kms).Good number of buses are available to Delhi,Chandigarh, Shimla, etc.

Over the years, this University has contributed

significantly in transforming the farming scenario ofHimachal Pradesh. Today, the State has earned its

name for hill agricultural diversification and the

farming community has imposed its faith in the

University.

The University has four constituent Colleges

. College of Agriculture has 11departments (Agronomy, Soil

Science, Plant Breeding &Genetics, Plant Pathology,

Entomology, Agri.Economics, VegetableScience & Floriculture,

Agri. Extension Education,Tea Husbandry &

Technology, Horticulture,Agroforestry &Environment).

In addition, the University hasfive Centres for advanced research

and extension activities:

. College of Veterinary & Animal Science has 18

departments (Animal Breeding, Animal Nutrition,

Vety.Physiology, Gyneacology, Public Health,

Microbiology, Medicine, Surgery, Pathology,

Parasitology, Preventive Medicine, Livestock

Production Management, Livestock Production

Technology, Pharmacology, Anatomy & Histology,

Fisheries, Animal Husbandry Extension Education

and Biochemistry besides a Veterinary Clinics and a

LivestockFarm).

. College of Home Science has jive departments

(Food Science & Nutrition, Clothing & Textiles,Human Development & Family Studies, HomeScience Extension Education, Family ResourceManagement besides a Pilot Plant, Lab. School andOutdoor Creche).

. College of Basic Sciences (to be reincarnated asCollege of Biological & Environmental Sciences

shortly) has six departments ( Microbiology,Chemistry & Biochemistry, Plant Physiology,Statistics,. Physics & Mathematics, Botany &Zoology and Languages).

. Directorate of Research coordinates research in

the field of agriculture, veterinary and animalsciences, home science and basic sciences. The

directorate has been giving priority to locationspecific, need based and problem oriented researchwith multi disciplinary approach at main campusPalampur and research stations and sub stations.

The Directorate had (prior to remandating research

and extension at outstations) research network at

main campus and three research stations at

Bajaura(Kullu), Dhaulakuan (Sirmour) and

Kukumseri (Lahaul) and 11 research Sub-stations at

Kangra, Nagrota, Malan, Berthin, Akrot,

Sundernagar, Katrain, Leo, Lari, Sangla and Salooni.

After thorough study of the new challenges,requirements and opportunities, the University hasmodified its research and extension strategy.

Integration of Research & Extension in the year2002

Research and Extension (R&E) at off campus has beenfully integrated by strengthening three stations andupgrading two sub stations. Mandate has been

broadened and it is now production system andcommand area based. Farmer has beenplaced first inallplans.

. Directorate of Extension Education shares the

responsibility for planning, implementation andcoordination of various extension education

programmes of all the departments offour constituentcolleges and research centres in close collaboration

with the State Departments of Agriculture, AnimalHusbandry, Fisheries and other concerned

departments and institutions. It conducts a largenumber of trainings at main campus and at its eightKrishi Vigyan Kendras at Bajaura, Dhaulakuan,Hamirpur, Una, Mandi, Kangra, Berthin andKukumseri.

After integration of R & E set-up, the KVKs areworking in close coordination with R & E Centres.Agricultural Technology Information Centre(Tel. 01894-230395) is functional at the main entrance

of the University.
