“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Je-sus.” — Romans 8:1

Dear Friends in Christ,

I don’t know about you, but I need to hear constantly the good news that in Christ Jesus there is no condemnation. We humans do a good job of accusing and condemning as it is. Over the years I have had many oppor-tunities to love my neighbor, yet at times, I found myself shouting “colorful theological language” which accused and belittled my neigh-bors. I’m sure the point I was trying to make was lost.

And sometimes in response to my condemning words, I have been labeled a heretic or one who doesn’t read the Scriptures properly or one who is in league with Satan. Oh yes indeed, we humans are very good at condemn-ing each other. And I need to hear the comforting good news that with Jesus there is no condemnation.

This gospel, this good news that is so eloquently written of by the apostle Paul in the eighth chapter of Romans is summed up beautifully by the gospel writer we call John: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to con-demn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him” (John 3:16-17).

I need to hear, over and over, that God’s will is to save the world and us not condemn it and us since we are part of the world God intends to save. That is part of the reason I need to receive Holy Communion each time we assemble for worship. I need to hear the healing, saving words of for-giveness. I need to touch and taste Jesus and be reminded that he does not condemn; he saves.

Being human my fallen nature takes over more often than I care to admit. In all kinds of ways I don’t do a good job of living in Jesus’ law of love, loving God and loving my neighbor. I find myself in the same condition the apostle Paul found himself (Romans 7:14-25). I end up not doing the good I had hoped to do and doing the evil I had hoped to avoid. But that is not the last word. Thanks be to God that the answer is in Christ Jesus my Lord!

If you find that this all rings true for you also, I hope you will join me in hearing and touching and tasting the good news that in Christ there is for-giveness, healing, salvation, and no condemnation. Let us all confess our sin and come to the table of the Lord often to receive this gloriously good news as we worship. See you in worship. Glory be to God!

Blessings, Pastor Doug
