REDLANDS CHRISTIAN MIGRANT ASSOCIATION June 2007 Issue 170 1 A tribute to Ted Hoffman, Architect By Barbara Mainster For over twelve years, RCMA has had a contract with Ted Hoffman, to be our architect and artist in residence, so to speak. Prior to that time, Ted worked with us in 1975 when the Homestead Housing Authority had money to renovate both South Dade and later Redlands. And both were amaz- ing transformations. The pictures below of South Dade before and after will show you how true that is. This is what kept him in our radar and led us back to Ted when we were ready to add onto the state office in Immokalee in 1995. A formal relationship began when we started the Rollason center in Immokalee. Ted designed the building, which sure was not what we had expected when we called him, but thankfully, he convinced us that he knew best. (No ques- tion, the front wall mural, when finished, will be one of the finest works of public art in Florida.) Ted then pointed out to me that he could work directly under contract with us and supervise all the building work more cheaply than if we had to pay his fee. The rest is, as they say, history. He continued on contract, relocating from Miami to a trailer in Immokalee and then to La Belle. He worked for RCMA pretty much exclusively. His other accomplish- ments include the Krome Center, renovating the Rollason Pre and Infant, the renovation of Pomona, Seville, Walker, the building of Beth El Child Development Center, Balm, Walker Early Head Start, Everglades addition, Immokalee Charter School with the Migrant Head Start Center nestled inside, Dade City Center, Fred Dennis Early Head Start, Covill Center, complete renovation of Moorehaven’s Wash- ington Park, and partial renovations of Smith Brown and Fred Dennis. He provided the design for the Pro Center and for the Whispering Pines Center, which other architects finished (not nearly as well as he would have, but we were not paying the bill). His transformation of the three “box” portables which are now the Wimauma Academy charter school is one of his most exciting creations. much needed meeting room. In addition, Ted found ways to accept the inevitable Head Start portable buildings, and with creative placement on sites, adding win-dows, decks, porch roofs, and landscap-ing, these too became unique oasis for children, staff and families. And his tree houses are true works of art! Most of these twelve years, Ted had the help of Mike Facundo, while Mike was finishing his architect degree and after. His mentoring of Mike has been a gift – for all of us. In addition, Ted served as a strong partner to Manuel Padilla, who has since achieved his

General Contractor license. Ted’s influences on both men are immeasurable. Not content to just be our architect, Ted used his photography to create our stationary, note cards, a calendar, and to adorn many offices and hallways around the state. His eye for beauty and deep love for children always comes through loud and clear. His enthusiasm and artistic en-ergy also bounced into video work. While planning Mr. Rollason’s 80th birthday party with Teresa Tremelling, the movie bug bit him and we have our 40th anniversary, The Begin-ning Years as proof of that talent. His wild enthusiasm for the RCMA mission and staff provided the beginning and ending videos of our State conferences and lots of entertainment! Life and work with Ted is never boring, which many of you who have had the opportunity to work with him know full well! Sadly, RCMA’s building projects can no longer sustain keeping Ted under contract. Therefore, effective June 30, Ted is leaving RCMA -- stronger, much more beautiful and richer in our environment. He will be around to finish some loose ends in Zellwood, is helping East Coast with some of their projects, and who knows, may end up designing another building for us, if it is meant to be. Meanwhile, this HOY issue is dedi-cated to his art and to express our deep appreciation of Ted’s leg-acy in RCMA. He remains my friend and supporter of the cause. As he says, his reward is in the work he does. Lest we forget. Thank you, Ted.
