United Way of Greater St. Louis has a long tradition of helping people through raising funds and mobilizing the community. The past year was one of great need in our region, but it was also a year of tremendous generosity and people engaging to help their neighbors.

Recognizing the drastic increase in needs among local individuals and families in the past few years, our board made the bold decision to raise the fundraising goal by $3 million. For the first time in our 89-year history, under the leadership of Danny Ludeman, the campaign broke the $70 million mark, raising $71,027,412. The community’s generosity will enable us to provide more help to people in need by increasing funding to the quality health and human service organizations that partner with us. Together, we will once again provide services to more than one million people in our region.

The keys to the campaign’s success include the leadership of Danny Ludeman, the hundreds of volunteers who dedicated countless hours to the effort and, most importantly, the sheer generosity and caring of people from all walks of life who gave to simply help those in need. While our community is 18th in market size, our United Way campaign ranks as the fifth largest in the nation. It is obvious that St. Louis and the 15 surrounding counties in Illinois and Missouri boast the most generous and caring individuals anywhere.

The caring does not stop with donations. When the St. Louis and Joplin tornadoes struck this past spring, the community and United Way were ready to help. United Way 2-1-1 responded to 22,118 calls during the back-to-back disasters, providing resources, tracking needs and mobilizing volunteers.

As needs changed from immediate to long-term for those impacted by the St. Louis tornadoes, United Way 2-1-1 organized a one-day multi-agency resource center with key partners, offering resources to more than 800 affected families.

During the course of the year, more than 32,000 people volunteered their time through United Way’s Volunteer Center. From company-led Days of Caring projects to individuals volunteering through St. Louis Cares or disaster relief efforts, thousands of people helped others through the gift of time. For the 10th anniversary of 9/11, United Way led a weeklong effort of volunteer opportunities, services and events, matching 3,000 volunteers with meaningful projects in our region.

These are just a small fraction of the ways our region helps people through United Way every day. It could be something as critical as helping a family who has nowhere to stay because of a tornado or as seemingly simple as a gift for the holidays, but every act of caring and generosity makes a significant, lasting difference in a person’s life.

Thank you for helping people through United Way.
