Marie first suered a stroke in December 2017. This was followed by a second stroke in April 2018. She felt very sad that she had to stop work and was lost about how she was going to cope.

She came to know about ABLE while recovering at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and subsequently enrolled into ABLE’s Return-to-Work (RTW) programme.

PRESIDENT HALIMAH YACOB’S VISIT – 28 MAY 2019We were privileged to have President Halimah Yacob visit and interact with our clients and family caregivers. ABLE is a beneficiary of the President’s Challenge Empowering for Life (ELF) fund, which supports Speech and Language therapy for clients on the RTW programme.

ABLE Rehabilitation Centre is a forerunner in oering Pilates rehabilitation to persons with physical challenges, complementing our Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy services.

PILATES REHABILITATION Pilates rehabilitation is made possible through our CSR partnership with The Moving Body (TMB) Group since 2015.

TMB Pilates instructors are trained in Movement Strategies, a course that equips them to work with clients with movement limitation and volunteer their time each week to work with our clients. Two volunteer Pilates instructors share their experience.

What is an important takeaway from your experience?

“Working the ABLE clients has given me a special opportunity to connect with local Singaporeans and integrate better into the community.

As I built a relationship with each client, I was able to learn about them and their motivations. While we are dierent – they have physical challenges and I am a foreigner – yet we can learn from each other.”Barbara Vlot

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of volunteering with the physically challenged?

“You need to have an open mind and bring all your past work experience, to be able to adapt and adjust to meet their needs.

Learning to communicate with the clients is also very important to build rapport, get their feedback on the sessions, again with the aim of meeting their goals and needs.” Sudha Natrajan
